Mexico's AXE Ceremonia Festival Canceled After Crane Collapse Kills Two Photographers
The AXE Ceremonia festival in Mexico City was cut short this weekend after a crane collapsed and killed two photographers.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday during Meme Del Real (of Café Tacvba)'s set. A large gust of wind caused a crane holding a decorative metallic object to fall on two photographers covering the event, now confirmed to be Miguel Angel Rojas and Berenice Giles. According to local authorities, the two 'received pre-hospital care at the scene, and were later urgently transported to the hospital, where they unfortunately passed away.'
While the festival carried on throughout Saturday despite the tragedy — including performances from Charli XCX and Tomorrow x Together — the festival organizers and local mayor opted to suspend Sunday's activities, which was set to feature performances from Tyler, the Creator, Massive Attack, The Marías, and more. Neither the local authorities nor AXE Ceremonia have provided details as to what led the crane to collapse, nor why they kept the event going on Saturday as normal; the festival did, however, release a statement confirming the accident on Saturday evening.
'With deep sadness, we confirm the passing of the two people who were injured during today's incident,' AXE Ceremonia said in a statement. 'We are deeply heartbroken by this loss. We are reaching out to their families to support them during this incredibly difficult time and to provide them with all our care and solidarity. The safety of our community has always been our priority, and we continue, as from the very beginning, to maintain close collaboration and complete transparency with the authorities.' The festival released a statement on the incident and cancellation to Instagram, and announced that refunds would be issued to festival goers automatically.
The local mayor's office also confirmed the day's cancellation, saying,'The teams from the Miguel Hidalgo Government and Legal Affairs, along with the borough's Civil Protection department and the Administrative Verification Institute of Mexico City, completed the inspection and placed suspension seals at the entrances to AXE Ceremonia in Bicentennial Park. Therefore, the event this Sunday, April 6, is suspended.'
In light of the tragedy, several members of the press and creative community created a makeshift memorial in tribute to Rojas and Giles near the festival grounds (as captured by photographer Franco Emmanuel above).

Pete Davidson doesn't mince words about ‘SNL 50' star-studded audience: ‘Terrible'
Tough crowd. Pete Davidson revealed that the star-studded audience during the 'Saturday Night Live' 50th anniversary special was, well, 'terrible.' On Wednesday's episode of 'Late Night With Seth Meyers' Davidson, 31, said, 'It's a terrible audience. It's just famous people, and famous people only like themselves.' 9 Pete Davidson during an interview with host Seth Meyers on August 6, 2025. Lloyd Bishop/NBC 9 Paul Shaffer, Nancy Juvonen, Billy Crystal, David Letterman and Drew Barrymore in the audience at the 'SNL 50' special. Todd Owyoung/NBC 9 Pete Davidson in a sketch during 'SNL 50.' Holland Rainwater/NBC Davidson, who was on 'SNL' for eight seasons, from 2014 to 2022, added that he's 'guilty of this' too. 'SNL50: The Anniversary' aired on Feb. 16, and commemorated a landmark half-century of the iconic New York sketch comedy show with a medley of musical performances and sketches from current and past stars – including Davidson, Andy Samberg, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Amy Poehler, Kate McKinnon, and Will Ferrell. As Davidson pointed out, the audience was mostly made up of stars, including Robert De Niro, Kim Kardashian, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Jon Hamm, Alec Baldwin, Drew Barrymore, David Letterman, and Steve Martin. The house was so packed that the production designer told The Post they had to add 200 extra chairs to accommodate all the guests. 9 Pete Davidson during 'SNL 50.' Virginia Sherwood/NBC Jack Nicholson, 88, was also on hand to introduce an Adam Sandler segment — even though he's been spotted in public less frequently in recent years. Davidson, who revealed in July that he's expecting his first child with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt, admitted not all of the guests were bad though. 'Meryl [Streep] rules,' he said of the 76-year-old Oscar winner. 'I get to my seat and I just look and I'm like, 'This can't be right.' And it was Meryl Streep and I just sat down and I was like, 'I'm so sorry that I'm sitting next to you. You're the best.' And she was very nice.' During the special, Davidson appeared in a pre-taped sketch as his Chad character, along with Laraine Newman, 73, who was in the original cast when the show launched in 1975. 9 Laraine Newman and Pete Davidson in a sketch in 'SNL 50.' Theo Wargo/NBC Fellow original cast member Dan Aykroyd, 73, recently said he skipped the special because he wanted to watch it from home. The most 'emotional' moment for him was Newman's sketch with Davidson, which he called, 'beautiful.' 'It's my one character that I got to do. In eight years of 'SNL,' I had one character,' Davidson said. 'But it's not a very flattering character. Everyone was so excited to see Laraine, and then I just have my shirt off.'

Pete Davidson thought the star-studded audience at the ‘SNL50' special was ‘terrible'
'SNL50' was a historic broadcast which brought together past 'Saturday Night Live' hosts as well as former and current cast members to celebrate the monumental anniversary of the long-running NBC comedy show. But not everyone fully enjoyed it. 'As you know from 'SNL40'… terrible audience,' Pete Davidson, who was a cast member on 'SNL' from 2014 to 2022, told fellow former 'SNL'-er Seth Meyers on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers' on Thursday, in reference to the star-studded event celebrating the show's 50th anniversary that aired in February. 'It's a terrible audience 'cause it's just famous people, and famous people only like themselves,' he added. Davidson was in attendance in the audience but also took part in some of the skits performed during the run of the show. In spite of him not feeling his fellow audience members too much, there was at least one star that Davidson said he did enjoy. He sat beside the legendary Meryl Streep in the audience and told Meyers, 'Meryl rules.' 'In typical SNL fashion, they don't tell you anything. You don't even know what's going on,' Davidson said. 'I get to my seat and I just look and I'm like, 'This can't be right.'' And while the pair may have seemed like an odd couple, it sounds like it went well despite Davidson's amazement that she had been paired to sit with him. 'I'm like, 'I'm so sorry that I'm sitting next to you. You're the best,'' he said. 'And she's the best.' Like Davidson, Streep also took part in the on-air performances during 'SNL50,' making her debut on the sketch show as the mother of a legacy character played by Kate McKinnon.
