The Big Question: Will Trevor Harris start at quarterback in Saskatchewan's next game?

National Post30-06-2025
After a 4-0 start to the 2025 CFL season, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are into their first bye week of the season.
Article content
And heading into the break, there's one question we probably know the answer to but will need to wait until next week before it's officially confirmed:

Will Trevor Harris start at quarterback in Saskatchewan's next game?
Article content
That is 'The Big Question' this week and it appears Harris will in fact return to his starting role when the Roughriders return to practice next week ahead of Saskatchewan's Week 6 contest against the Calgary Stampeders on July 11.
Article content
Harris was victorious in his first three starts this season, including Saskatchewan's Week 3 game in Toronto on June 20, when the quarterback took a late hit to the helmet before being knocked to the turf.
Article content
Harris stayed in the game and it wasn't until after the game that he apparently started feeling concussion-related symptoms. The Roughriders put Harris in concussion protocol and the veteran quarterback was forced to miss the first two days of practice last week for the Green and White as they prepared to host the B.C. Lions on the weekend.
Article content
While Jake Maier got the reps on Day 1 and 2, Harris returned for the team's closed practice on Thursday as a full participant before being placed on the one-game injured list on Friday when the team released its depth chart.
Article content
Evidently, Harris didn't clear concussion protocol in time for a full contact and a return to the field on Saturday. Since he was trending in the right direction and appears fine, head coach Corey Mace said after Saturday's game that Harris should in fact return after the team's bye week.
Article content
'The timing for the protocol didn't work, but Trevor will be fine,' said Mace. 'I would expect him to be ready for Calgary.'
Article content
Article content
As for Maier, he did what he was asked to do on Saturday as the veteran of 45 career CFL starts made his first start with the Green and White.
Article content
'I was really pleased overall with his with his effort, which was clearly more than enough for us,' Mace said of Maier.
Article content
Running back A.J. Ouellette had a career game with 138 rushing yards while Saskatchewan's defence chipped in with three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown by Tevaughn Campbell.
Article content
After the game, Maier said getting his first start in green and white was 'amazing' but even he knows he'll be relegated to a backup role once again when Harris returns next week.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch watches as his players make their mark at new clubs

Thanks to star striker Jonathan David's recent move to Juventus, Canada coach Jesse Marsch draws more attention these days when he leaves his Italian home. Article content 'Being here in Italy, the way I describe it is everyone kind of has their local team and then if you don't like your local team or if you don't have one, then your team is Juventus,' Marsch said in an interview. 'Even here in my little town at the cafe, I get a lot of questions. I didn't even know half of them knew I was a football coach. Article content Article content 'As soon as I show up for a coffee or some dinner, they're like 'Tell us about Jonathan David?' But he won't disappoint. He's going to do great.' Article content The two exchanged texts after David, who joined the Italian giant last month on a five-year deal from France's Lille, opened his scoring account with a spectacular acrobatic volley. Article content David is one several Canadian players finding their feet with a new team, with perhaps more moves to come before the summer transfer window closes. Article content 'The fact that a lot of them have hit the ground running (with their new teams) is a very positive thing for us,' said Marsch. Article content Ismael Kone is also in Italy, on loan to newly promoted Sassuolo from France's Marseille, while fellow midfielder Nathan Saliba has opened his account with Belgium's Anderlecht. Marsch believes the move to Italy will help Kone. Article content 'He'll play. And I think because they're a lower team, every game is going to be a fight. They're going to have to be very defensively disciplined, not let games get too wide open. And that's perfect for Ismael and his overall development. Article content 'And then Ismael can be a little bit of a difference-maker on the team with the kinds of plays he can make on the ball and the kind of creativity he cam play with. If he can get the balance of those two aspects of his game right, I think he can help that team be successful and he can be a really good player here in Serie A.' Article content Defender Luc de Fougerolles (on loan to Belgium's F.C.V. Dender from England's Fulham) and midfielder Mathieu Choiniere (on loan to Los Angeles FC from Switzerland's Grasshopper Club Zurich) have also switched teams. Article content With playing time at Spain's Mallorca seemingly drying up, forward Cyle Larin may be changing clubs. And Minnesota United forward Tani Oluwayesi has been linked to Spain's Villarreal. Article content Midfielders Stephen Eustaquio (currently with Portugal's FC Porto) and Niko Sigur (Croatia's Hajduk Split) and defender Derek Cornelius (Marseille) could also make moves, Marsch said. Article content The 28th-ranked Canadian men return to action next month with games against No. 48 Romania on Sept. 5 in Bucharest and No. 31 Wales on Sept. 9 in Swansea followed by games against No. 24 Australia on Oct. 10 in Montreal and No. 14 Colombia on Oct. 14 in Harrison, N.J.

Roughriders looking for payback against Stampeders on Saturday

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are seeking revenge. Article content On Saturday night in Week 12 of the CFL season, the Roughriders — who are off to an 8-1 start for just the second time in team history — will visit the 6-3 Calgary Stampeders, who have been the only team to beat the Green and White this season. Article content Article content In that Week 6 game on July 12, which was postponed by a day due to poor air quality, the Stampeders got out to a 17-3 halftime lead before closing out the 24-10 victory. Article content 'We know that we're better than that,' said Roughriders linebacker C.J. Reavis. 'I feel like we've got a good chance to come out there and get our lick back. Article content 'It's always good getting hit in the mouth … I think it was a good reality check for us and at the perfect time.' Article content Against Calgary, quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. threw for 428 yards and three touchdowns while running back Dedrick Mills had 85 yards along the ground. Article content And watching the film on that game as they prepare for the rematch this week has shown the Roughriders a few things they can clean up. Article content It has also served as a bit of motivation for a team that leads the West Division by four points at the midway mark of the season. Article content 'We're going to have to watch that tape again this week, and if that's what it takes to motivate the guys to get it going,' said head coach Corey Mace. 'When they go back and watch the (film) in what we identified as our worst game of the year, yeah they're going to have to see that over and over and over again. Article content Article content Offensively, Saskatchewan was limited to 10 points in that game, which is the only time the Green and White have been held to fewer than 20 points this season. Article content However it wasn't as if they were shut out completely as the offence still racked up 427 net yards and 22 first downs. Article content 'We moved the ball very, very effectively, but they do a tremendous job of keeping you out of the end zone,' said quarterback Trevor Harris, whose team was one-for-three in the red zone. 'They've done that all year. Article content 'But a half click here, half click there on a certain play here or there and it's an explosive. And on certain plays where we did get explosives, it's a half click here, a half click there and they probably have a sack or a bat down, or whatever it may be.' Article content This week, the Roughriders have added a few wrinkles in the offensive game plan, knowing that Calgary will do the same defensively. Article content 'Teams usually play a team slightly different,' said offensive coordinator Mueller. 'They do what they do, but they play certain players and certain teams and certain play callers or coordinators a certain way.

Canadians Brace, Zhao advance to 2nd round of women's qualifying at U.S. Open

Canadian tennis player Cadence Brace moved a step closer to her first Grand Slam main draw berth with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Japan's Nao Hibino in U.S. Open qualifying Tuesday in New York. Brace was one of two Canadians to move on to the second round of women's qualifying, along with veteran Carol Zhao, who defeated 15th seed Maria Lourdes Carle of Argentina 7-6 (8), 6-2. The 20-year-old Brace, from Toronto, converted six of seven break-point chances to win her Grand Slam qualifying debut in a match where both players struggled to hold serve. Hibino, 30, scored breaks on five of six chances, but lost serve three times to once for her opponent in the decisive third set. Brace will next face 32nd-seed Veronika Erjavec of Slovenia in the second round of the women's qualifying tournament. The winner of that match will take on either Claire Liu of the United States or Australia's Maddison Inglis for a spot in the main draw. The 30-year-old Zhao from Richmond Hill, Ont., scored her sixth break in the final game of the match to upset Carle as she continues to push for her second Grand Slam berth after qualifying for Wimbledon in 2023. Zhao will next face the winner of a match between Italy's Lucrezia Stefanini and Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia. Earlier, Belgium's Hanne Vandewinkel defeated Marina Stakusic of Mississauga, Ont., 6-3, 6-2, while in men's action, France's Kyrian Jacquet beat seventh seed Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., 7-5, 6-2. Stakusic, 20, was looking to make her second Grand Slam main draw appearance and first since Wimbledon last year. Draxl, 23, has not yet appeared in a tennis major.
