Delhi Govt to transform DTC: Smart Cards, high-tech bus shelters and ISBT upgrades on agenda
Delhi Transport Corporation
(DTC) to provide world-class public transport services to the citizens of the national capital.
According to a release, under this initiative,
smart travel cards
will soon be introduced, bus routes are being restructured, interstate bus terminals (ISBTs) will be modernised, and bus queue shelters (BQSs) will be redesigned to be more comfortable and high-tech.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while addressing a high-level review meeting of the Transport Department on Tuesday, asserted that with the guidance and support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the dream of equipping Delhi with world-class public transport will soon be realised.
The meeting was attended by Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Singh, Chief Secretary Dharmendra, Transport Commissioner Niharika Rai, and other senior officials.
CM Gupta stated that DTC, which is currently running at a loss of ₹60,000 crore due to past mismanagement, will be revitalised and transformed into a robust transport service.
She further added that the number of both small (DEVI) and large buses is being increased, and the new routes are being strategically planned to enhance accessibility for commuters.
"Our government envisions DTC as a symbol of excellent transport service in Delhi," the CM stated, as per the release.
Delhi CM, while reviewing the city's transport systems, laid out key developments that will shape Delhi's public transport future.
One of the major announcements was the introduction of a
unified smart card system
for all modes of
public transport in Delhi
. This card will enable seamless travel across DTC buses, Delhi Metro, and the upcoming Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). The Chief Minister also announced a special Pink Card for women and transgender residents, which will allow them free travel in DTC buses. Discussions are currently underway with banks to ensure a smooth and foolproof rollout of these cards, aimed at making public transportation more accessible and hassle-free.
CM Gupta also shared the current status of the DTC fleet, noting that Delhi operates 660 small electric buses, 1,800 large electric buses, and 1,800 CNG buses, with a total of 4,800 electric buses forming the city's robust EV fleet. However, she acknowledged that many of these buses still operate on outdated routes, limiting their effectiveness in serving the city's population.
To address this, the government has collaborated with IIT Delhi to design a comprehensive new route plan. This plan aims to enhance bus connectivity in underserved areas and improve integration with Metro services. A pilot project will be initiated in Yamuna Vihar, following which the model will be implemented citywide, the release said.
Another key area of focus is the modernisation of Bus Queue Shelters (BQS) across the capital. All BQS will be upgraded with real-time arrival displays, LED lighting, digital boards, solar power support, and weather-resistant designs. These upgrades will be executed through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Currently, out of the 4,627 shelters in Delhi, only 2,021 are functional. The new shelter designs are inspired by global standards and tailored to Delhi's local needs, the press release added.
The Chief Minister also emphasised the need to transform Delhi's Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBTs) into world-class facilities. Terminals like Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar, and Sarai Kale Khan will be revamped to provide airport-like amenities, ensuring passenger comfort, safety, and accessibility. These terminals will be equipped with modern infrastructure and will serve as model hubs for intercity travel in India's capital.

reiterated, "With the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and collaborative efforts between the Centre and Delhi Government, we are determined to give Delhi citizens a sustainable, green, and smart public transport experience."

Let's take a closer look: What we know Negotiations for the deal began in January 2022 under the previous Conservative government. Then prime minister Boris Johnson had ordered negotiators 'to get it done by Diwali in October'. However, the talks over the deal have stretched on for years before concluding in May 2025. Modi in May hailed it as a 'historical deal'. This is India's first such agreement with another nation in over a decade. This is the UK's fourth trade agreement since Brexit. Bilateral trade between the two countries was at $55 billion in 2023/24. The deal includes a double contribution convention – also known as a social security pact – which will help Indian workers. This exempt Indian professionals and companies from social security contributions in the UK for three years — a move described by the Indian government as a 'huge win'. The idea behind it is to stop employers and employees from the burden of contributing to social security in multiple countries. The FTA is extremely detailed – comprising 26 chapters on goods, services, investment, and intellectual property rights. India and the UK are negotiating a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) on a parallel track. India has FTAs with Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Australia, UAE, Mauritius, the 10-nation bloc ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and four European nations' bloc EFTA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland). India is also currently negotiating FTAs with the US, Oman, the European Union (EU), Peru, and Israel. How India benefits The deal will allow 99 per cent of Indian exports to the UK to fall under zero-duty category. This will boost labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather, apparel and footwear, toys, marine product, gems and jewellery. Many of these currently face tariffs ranging from 4 per cent to 16 per cent. Engineering goods, auto components, electric and hybrid vehicles, and sports goods will also benefit. The double contribution pact will be of great help to Indian workers in the UK. It will exempt them from paying into social security for a period of three years. 'The UK is an important market for Indian exporters,' Ajay Sahai, director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisation, said. It is expected to benefit firms such as Welspun India, Arvind Ltd, Bata India, Relaxo, Tata Motors, Mahindra Electric, and Bharat Forge. It will also increase the flow of investment to India. The UK is currently India's sixth-largest foreign investor. It has already invested $36 billion in India. British firms could partner with Indian companies under the FTA and receive benefits. 'This is a significant agreement,' Vikram Misri, India's foreign secretary, told reporters on Tuesday. Trade minister Piyush Goyal will accompany Modi for the formal signing, a commerce ministry official said. How UK benefits The UK has called this its 'biggest and most economically significant' deal since it signed a similar agreement with the EU. The government has called it a 'huge economic win for the UK' and a 'landmark trade deal'. India will eliminate tariffs on 90 per cent of UK goods. Cars being sent to India, which currently face 100 per cent tariffs, will be cut to just 10 per cent. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer The government has called it a 'huge economic win for the UK' and a 'landmark trade deal'. Additionally, British firms investing in India could receive preferential treatment under the 'Make in India' policy. The Scotch Whisky Association has called the deal 'transformational' The deal is expected to boost the UK economy by $6.5 billion by 2040. Suggesting that one can't hide from reality, he said that the entire world knows that Trump announced a "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan. "How can the Prime Minister give a statement? Kya bolenge PM, ki Trump ne karwaya hai? (What will he say? That Trump has announced it? He can't say it, but it is the truth. The entire world knows that Trump has announced a ceasefire. We can't hide from reality," Gandhi told reporters here. "This is not only about a ceasefire. There are several major issues that we would like to discuss related to defence, defence manufacturing, and Operation Sindoor. The condition is not normal; the entire nation knows," he added. Gandhi said the Prime Minister has not been able to provide a single response to Trump's claims about a ceasefire, which he has reiterated 25 times so far. This came after a recent statement made by Donald Trump, where he repeated his claims of "stopping the war between India and Pakistan" in the name of trade deals.

The Minto Bridge, placed strategically where Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Marg meets Swami Vivekananda Marg, is an integral artery that connects Connaught Place, New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi, and Darya Ganj. The sudden turn of events soon attracted responses on all social media networks, with most calling it a "miracle at Minto Bridge." Amit Malviya of BJP attributed the turnaround to the new Delhi BJP government under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. "Even after heavy rain, vehicles passed smoothly over Minto Bridge, which used to get flooded with even a drizzle. That's the difference Delhi is seeing in just a few months under the BJP government!" Malviya tweeted. Minto Bridge remaining open during the monsoons is a sign of good progress. The Minto Bridge has been an evergreen problem for civic officials in the past, with attempts over decades to address its waterlogging problems. The Public Works Department (PWD) has taken numerous steps over the years, ranging from the installation of pumps to the laying of new drainage lines. This latest example of the underpass staying dry even as heavy rains lashed the city indicates that all efforts made recently may be paying off, providing a ray of hope for Delhi's monsoons.
