Delhi Govt to transform DTC: Smart Cards, high-tech bus shelters and ISBT upgrades on agenda
Delhi Transport Corporation
(DTC) to provide world-class public transport services to the citizens of the national capital.
According to a release, under this initiative,
smart travel cards
will soon be introduced, bus routes are being restructured, interstate bus terminals (ISBTs) will be modernised, and bus queue shelters (BQSs) will be redesigned to be more comfortable and high-tech.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while addressing a high-level review meeting of the Transport Department on Tuesday, asserted that with the guidance and support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the dream of equipping Delhi with world-class public transport will soon be realised.
The meeting was attended by Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Singh, Chief Secretary Dharmendra, Transport Commissioner Niharika Rai, and other senior officials.
CM Gupta stated that DTC, which is currently running at a loss of ₹60,000 crore due to past mismanagement, will be revitalised and transformed into a robust transport service.
She further added that the number of both small (DEVI) and large buses is being increased, and the new routes are being strategically planned to enhance accessibility for commuters.
"Our government envisions DTC as a symbol of excellent transport service in Delhi," the CM stated, as per the release.
Delhi CM, while reviewing the city's transport systems, laid out key developments that will shape Delhi's public transport future.
One of the major announcements was the introduction of a
unified smart card system
for all modes of
public transport in Delhi
. This card will enable seamless travel across DTC buses, Delhi Metro, and the upcoming Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). The Chief Minister also announced a special Pink Card for women and transgender residents, which will allow them free travel in DTC buses. Discussions are currently underway with banks to ensure a smooth and foolproof rollout of these cards, aimed at making public transportation more accessible and hassle-free.
CM Gupta also shared the current status of the DTC fleet, noting that Delhi operates 660 small electric buses, 1,800 large electric buses, and 1,800 CNG buses, with a total of 4,800 electric buses forming the city's robust EV fleet. However, she acknowledged that many of these buses still operate on outdated routes, limiting their effectiveness in serving the city's population.
To address this, the government has collaborated with IIT Delhi to design a comprehensive new route plan. This plan aims to enhance bus connectivity in underserved areas and improve integration with Metro services. A pilot project will be initiated in Yamuna Vihar, following which the model will be implemented citywide, the release said.
Another key area of focus is the modernisation of Bus Queue Shelters (BQS) across the capital. All BQS will be upgraded with real-time arrival displays, LED lighting, digital boards, solar power support, and weather-resistant designs. These upgrades will be executed through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Currently, out of the 4,627 shelters in Delhi, only 2,021 are functional. The new shelter designs are inspired by global standards and tailored to Delhi's local needs, the press release added.
The Chief Minister also emphasised the need to transform Delhi's Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBTs) into world-class facilities. Terminals like Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar, and Sarai Kale Khan will be revamped to provide airport-like amenities, ensuring passenger comfort, safety, and accessibility. These terminals will be equipped with modern infrastructure and will serve as model hubs for intercity travel in India's capital.

He also transferred ₹20,500 crore directly into the bank accounts of over 9.70 crore farmers nationwide under the 20th installment of the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi scheme. A short film showcasing the success and impact of the scheme on farmers was also screened during the event. He cited the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi as proof of the government's firm commitment and recalled how Opposition parties like the Samajwadi Party and Congress had spread rumours in 2019, claiming the scheme would stop after elections or the money would be taken back. 'Has a single installment stopped over the years? The PM-KISAN scheme is running without any break,' he said. Presenting data, he shared that nearly ₹3.75 lakh crore has been transferred directly to farmers' accounts so far. In Uttar Pradesh alone, 2.5 crore farmers have received over ₹90,000 crore, while farmers from Kashi have got ₹900 crore. Modi emphasised the transparency of the scheme, saying there are no cuts, commissions or middlemen. 'We have created a permanent system where there's no leakage and no one can steal the rights of the poor,' he added. Reiterating the development mantra 'jo jitna pichhra, use utnahi zyada prathamikta (the more backward one is, the higher the priority that one receives),' Modi announced that earlier this month, the central government approved a major new initiative—the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana. He informed that ₹24,000 crore will be allocated for this scheme. The prime minister emphasized that the focus of this initiative will be on districts that were left behind due to flawed policies of previous governments—areas with low agricultural output and where farmers' incomes remain limited. Modi said the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana will directly benefit millions of farmers in Uttar Pradesh as well. 'Our government is working with full strength to transform the lives of farmers, increase their income, and reduce the cost of cultivation, We stand firmly with farmers from seed to market,' he said , highlighting that to ensure water reaches the fields, irrigation schemes worth lakhs of crores of rupees are being implemented across the country. He acknowledged that weather has always posed a major challenge for farmers—be it excessive rainfall, hailstorms, or frost. To protect farmers from such uncertainties, the government launched the PM Fasal Bima Yojana. He informed that under this scheme, farmers have received claim settlements amounting to over ₹1.75 lakh crore so far. Affirming that the government is committed to ensuring farmers receive fair prices for their produce, the prime minister stated that record increases have been made in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of crops, including key staples like rice and wheat. He expressed satisfaction at connecting with the farmers from across the country through videoconference. Emphasising the government's focus on increasing women's participation in the agricultural economy, Modi highlighted the 'Lakhpati Didi' campaign, with a target of creating three crore Lakhpati Didis across India. He also mentioned that the government's 'Drone Didi' initiative has significantly boosted the income of lakhs of women. He said, 'Under the Jan Dhan Yojana, 55 crore bank accounts have been opened for the poor across the country'. He said the scheme recently completed 10 years and as per regulations, bank accounts require fresh KYC verification after ten years. He added that to fulfill this requirement, a nationwide campaign has been launched from July 1, 2025. He appealed to every individual who holds a Jan Dhan account to ensure they complete their KYC process without delay. Modi shared that in recent days he had been observing images of Shiva devotees in Varanasi carrying Gangajal, especially on the first Monday of Sawan, when the pilgrims set out to perform the sacred Jalabhishek of Baba Vishwanath. 'I had a deep desire to visit Baba Vishwanath and Markandeya Mahadev during the holy month of Sawan,' he said. However, he noted that his presence could cause inconvenience to Mahadev's devotees or disrupt their darshan, hence he was offering his salutations to Lord Bholenath and Maa Ganga from here only. Recalling his recent visit to the historic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in Tamil Nadu, Modi noted that this temple was built by the renowned king Rajendra Chola, who had brought Gangajal from North India to symbolically unite the North and South. He highlighted that a thousand years ago, through his devotion to Lord Shiva and commitment to Shaivite tradition, Rajendra Chola had proclaimed the vision of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.' PM-KISAN payout helps farmers buy diesel for tractors in State
New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the 20th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, farmers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on Saturday expressed gratitude, saying the scheme has significantly helped them buy diesel for tractors, and pay wages to labourers. The PM-KISAN scheme has been a crucial support for farmers during difficult times. In Karnataka's Dharwad district, farmers said that the PM-KISAN initiative is making a positive impact on their agricultural activities. The funds help not only in purchasing seeds and fertilisers but also in managing household expenses, including school and college fees for their children. The scheme, launched by the PM Modi government, aims to provide income support to small and marginal farmers across the country. Under PM-KISAN, eligible farmers receive Rs 6,000 annually in three equal installments directly into their bank accounts. Speaking to IANS, farmers shared how the scheme has improved their lives. Nagappa Ganiger, a farmer from Dharwad, said, 'The PM-KISAN scheme has been a great help during tough times. It has enabled me to buy diesel for tractors and pay wages to labourers on time. So far, 20 installments have been credited to my account without fail. I am thankful to Prime Minister Modi.' Another farmer, Basavaraj Gunjal, added, 'With the aim of doubling farmers' income, Prime Minister Modi has introduced several farmer-friendly initiatives. The Rs 6,000 annual support through PM-KISAN has been a real benefit. On behalf of all farmers, I express my sincere thanks to him.'

Transport strike looms large as state-run staff plan indefinite stir from Aug 5
Bengaluru: Karnataka's public transport system is staring at a major disruption, as employees of all four state-run transport corporations KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC and KKRTC have called for an indefinite strike beginning August 5. Their demands include salary revision, payment of arrears, and other long-standing issues that remain unresolved despite several rounds of talks with the state government. In light of this looming crisis, the Transport Department has initiated contingency plans to minimize public inconvenience. However, failed attempts to pacify the workers have left officials scrambling for solutions, even as anxiety mounts among commuters who rely heavily on bus services across the state. In an important development, the Transport Department conducted a high-level meeting with private bus operators. The meeting was attended by Transport and Road Safety Commissioner Yogeesh and Additional Commissioner Mallikarjun, along with senior officials. The department urged private operators to step in and support public movement in case the strike materialises. The goal, officials stated, is to avoid paralyzing urban and rural connectivity. Private bus associations, however, have put forth a set of key demands in return for their cooperation. They have requested a 15-day exemption from road tax during the strike, citing the additional financial burden of operating during a high-demand period. They also insisted on the immediate enforcement of the 60:40 permit-sharing policy, under which 60% of stage carriage permits are allotted to government buses and 40% to private operators. Further, they have demanded a 50% waiver on penalties levied under Digital Surveillance Audit (DSA) cases and urged the government to initiate action against state-run buses that allegedly violate route and timing restrictions, encroaching into the business zones of private players. Meanwhile, the Labour Department attempted a second round of reconciliation talks between the transport corporations and the protesting staff, but it failed to yield any breakthrough. With negotiations collapsing, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to hold a crucial meeting on August 4 to discuss the crisis and possibly chart a last-minute resolution. The government now faces the challenge of balancing employee demands with public interest, as over a million passengers could be affected if the strike goes ahead. Daily commuters, especially in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad and Kalaburagi, are bracing for heavy inconvenience. As the countdown to August 5 begins, the state's ability to avoid a full-blown transport paralysis rests heavily on the outcome of Monday's meeting.
