Ramsey joins Mexico's Pumas UNAM after Cardiff City exit
MEXICO CITY - Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has joined Mexican side Pumas UNAM as a free agent, following a two-year stint at his boyhood club Cardiff City, the Liga MX team announced on Thursday.
The former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder signed a one-year contract with Pumas after briefly stepping in as Cardiff interim manager before the club's relegation to League One in April.
"I'm very excited, at a good point in my career to move forward. I know what the expectations are for this club and I'm here to do my part and help in any way I can," the 34-year-old Ramsey said at his presentation.
"I'm excited about this new challenge and surrounded by good players."
Ramsey, who shares an agent with Pumas head coach Efrain Juarez, has made it clear he wants to continue competing at the top level and is eyeing a leading role with Wales at the 2026 World Cup.
"I have had a lot of experience in my career and that obviously puts me in a good position," Ramsey added.
"I want to contribute in my role and achieve the objectives we have set for this season. There are things to be excited about and I am looking forward to this challenge."
Pumas will play a friendly match against Spanish side Leganes on Sunday before kicking off their Apertura campaign on July 12 when they visit Santos Laguna.
Ramsey is also expected to feature in the team's upcoming CONCACAF Champions Cup campaign. REUTERS

Mohamed Salah 'frightened' to return to Liverpool as fans mourn tragic Diogo Jota
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Well-wishers view flowers, scarves and shirts at a memorial set up close to Anfield football ground for their Portuguese forward Diogo Jota in Liverpool. LONDON – Mohamed Salah said the death of Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota in a car crash had left him 'frightened' to return to the club, as devastated fans swarmed to Anfield to pay their respects. The 28-year-old Portugal forward and his younger brother Andre Silva, 25, died in the early hours of July 3 after their car veered off a motorway in Spain and burst into flames. A wake for the siblings was first organised at a chapel in the Porto suburb of Gondomar ahead of their funeral on July 5 while fans in Liverpool were also in mourning. Jota's teammates have spoken of their struggle to comprehend his death, with captain Virgil van Dijk writing on Instagram that he was 'absolutely devastated and in total disbelief'. Liverpool manager Arne Slot said that the Portuguese 'will never be forgotten'. Salah also shared his deep grief on social media, admitting he was dreading returning to the club. 'I am truly lost for words,' last season's Premier League top scorer posted on Instagram. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Teammates come and go but not like this. It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back. 'My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.' Jota had married his partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, posting a video of their wedding on Instagram just hours before the accident. They had three children. Former Liverpool captain and teammate Jordan Henderson was among thousands of mourners to lay a tribute at a temporary shrine that has built up outside Anfield. ''Jots' it was a pleasure to share a pitch with you but more importantly a friendship. All the laughs we had off the pitch,' the Ajax and England midfielder wrote on Instagram. Fans have left flowers, scarves and shirts outside Anfield and there are similar scenes at Wolves' Molineux ground, where Jota played prior to his move to Liverpool. Emma Dainty, 38, from Liverpool, said: 'One of our great players has just lost his life and his brother as well. 'And it's an absolute tragedy and it should not have happened, no way should it have happened. He's not just a footballer to me. He had a wife, children. He had a family. It just shouldn't have happened.' Richard Jones, 39, a financial advisor from nearby Chester, said there was a feeling of 'disbelief' among fans of the recently crowned Premier League champions. 'We wanted to come down and just pay tribute, leave some flowers, and basically just to show our respects for such a tragic loss of life,' he said. 'You know, someone of 28 like that in the prime of his life, the prime of his career. Really, really tragic.' Joy Taylor, 65, a Liverpool shop worker, said Jota was 'absolutely awesome'. 'He was really, really so professional,' she added. 'And he's such a lovely man. You know, every time you saw him, he was always smiling. He always had a big smile on his face. He was just an all-rounder.' A delegation from Liverpool's city rivals Everton, including forwards Beto and Youssef Chermiti, visited to pay their respects and lay wreaths. Liverpool have opened a book of condolence and lowered flags to half-mast. Some of the club's players had been due back on July 4 at the start of pre-season training, but the first tranche of a phased return was postponed. Liverpool's first pre-season match was due to take place at Preston on July 13. But the club posted a statement on its website saying: 'Ticket sales for this game have been suspended following the devastating passing of our men's first team player Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.' Dortmund comfortable in underdog role against Real Madrid, says Kovac
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey - Borussia Dortmund are embracing the underdog role in their Club World Cup quarter-final against Real Madrid, coach Niko Kovac said on Friday, as the Bundesliga side aim to avenge their Champions League final defeat a year ago. Dortmund are riding high on an 11-match unbeaten streak but face tough odds against the LaLiga team under scorching heat in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Saturday, where Kovac expects a packed house with a tough crowd. The players "know exactly what does it mean to play against Real Madrid tomorrow", he told reporters at MetLife Stadium. "We're expecting a lot of supporters, especially for Real Madrid. We're here as an underdog but we also want to show our best face and hopefully - this is what we are believing - we can pass to the next round." Real Madrid are unbeaten against Dortmund in their last six meetings, having won their last four, including their 2-0 win in the Champions League final last year. The German team hope they can flip the odds after entering something of a revival since Kovac took the helm in February. The Croatian manager said his team are operating at the "highest level" of confidence against Real Madrid. "We need high self-confidence when we face Real Madrid," he said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Too soon to say if Mbappe will start against Dortmund, Alonso says
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Round of 16 - Real Madrid v Juventus - Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida, U.S. - July 1, 2025 Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe is pictured on the substitutes bench before the match REUTERS/Hannah Mckay/File Photo EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey - It is too soon to say whether Kylian Mbappe will start in Real Madrid's Club World Cup quarter-final match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, coach Xabi Alonso said, as the French forward continues his recovery from gastroenteritis. Mbappe made his tournament debut on Tuesday as Real Madrid edged Juventus 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals after missing all of the group stage. "He's getting better. He's been improving over the last three days," Alonso told reporters at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday. "Tomorrow morning we will be deciding if he will be part of the initial 11." Mbappe came off the bench as a substitute in the second half of the Spanish side's 1-0 win over Juventus in Miami on Tuesday, earning wild applause in a scene that underscored his global appeal at the U.S.-hosted tournament. Mbappe was briefly hospitalised early in the tournament, isolated from his teammates as he recovered. Alonso's team have leaned on Gonzalo Garcia to deputise in his absence, as the 21-year-old academy graduate has recorded three goals - including Tuesday's winner - and an assist in a breakout performance at the competition. "I think (Garcia and Mbappe) could complement each other and if it's something that is required, it's not something I'm going to turn a blind eye to," said Alonso. They face a Dortmund team in solid form on Saturday, after the German side held off a stirring second-half fightback from Monterrey 2-1 this week to book their spot in the final eight. "Dortmund is a very good team. As soon as (coach Niko Kovac) was at the helm, they were growing and developing and on the rise," said Alonso. "We are facing a tough opponent... It's gonna be tight tomorrow." REUTERS
