Habbaniyah Lake recovering: Water levels on the rise

Shafaq News10-07-2025
Shafaq News – Al-Anbar
Habbaniyah Lake and its resort area in Iraq's western al-Anbar province are showing early signs of recovery after years of environmental and economic decline, a local official stated on Thursday.
Ali Dawood, Mayor of Habbaniyah District, told Shafaq News that a recent rise in water levels has revitalized summer tourism, after declining levels had disrupted 'both recreational activity and drinking water infrastructure.'
The improvement follows new water release arrangements between the Iraqi and Turkish governments. 'We hope the inflows continue so the lake can return to normal and support the local economy,' Dawood said.
Built in the 1950s, Habbaniyah Lake is one of Iraq's largest artificial reservoirs. Its strategic location between Ramadi and al-Fallujah made it a favored domestic tourism destination for decades, supported by a state-constructed resort complex with hotels and leisure facilities.
However, years of instability and underinvestment severely degraded the site's infrastructure and appeal, compounded by an unprecedented drought that disrupted the region's ecological balance and drove wild predators from their habitats into residential areas in search of water and shelter.
Economic expert Mohammed al-Kubaisi told Shafaq News the area could still become a major investment hub if properly modernized, through rebuilding tourism infrastructure, enhancing public services, and ensuring a secure, family-friendly environment.
'Connecting Habbaniyah to nearby destinations such as Haditha, al-Rutba, and al-Nukhaib could help establish a tourism network across al-Anbar,' he added.
Environmental specialists also emphasized the impact of rising water levels. In addition to supporting tourism, the improved conditions are expected to strengthen the surrounding ecosystem, boost agricultural productivity, and reduce pressure on the Euphrates River—the province's main source of irrigation and drinking water.

Iraqi Planning Ministry Explores "Dollar Journey" in Iraqi Economy

By John Lee. The Ministry of Planning has hosted a consultative session on the "Journey of the Dollar in the Iraqi Economy: Between Monetary Policy and the Market." Organised by the Department of Economic and Financial Policies, the session brought together department heads and staff to analyse the sources, flows, and impact of foreign currency-primarily the US dollar-on Iraq's economy. Fatima Mohsen Mohammed, Head of the Macroeconomics Division in the Economic Policy and Modelling Department, explained that oil exports account for approximately 95% of Iraq's foreign currency inflows and more than 90% of state revenues. Other sources include: Remittances from Iraqis abroad (2-3%) Non-oil exports, such as dates, sulfur, phosphates, and basic agricultural and industrial goods (1%) Foreign investments and international aid, including loans, grants, and support from institutions like the IMF and World Bank (variable) Religious tourism, which contributes 1-2% Airlines, transport, and services sectors, which currently have minimal dollar inflow impact The discussion also examined the stages and mechanisms by which dollars enter Iraq and the interaction between monetary policy and market dynamics in influencing those flows. Kuwait targets Hezbollah finances with sanctions

Shafaq News – Kuwait On Monday, Kuwait's Foreign Ministry added Lebanon's Hezbollah group, its affiliated charity Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association, and three individuals to its sanctions and asset-freeze list. The listing includes Lebanese national A.M.M. (born May 18, 1966), Tunisian national A.F.M.Q. (born October 5, 1991), and Somali national A.M., born between 1950 and 1953. Kuwait's sanctions committee instructed all financial institutions and companies to enforce the designation, citing Articles 21, 22, and 23 of the executive regulations implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. Although Al-Qard Al-Hassan presents itself as a social and financial support organization, it is widely considered one of Hezbollah's most significant financial arms. Operating outside Lebanon's formal monetary and credit oversight framework, it has drawn ongoing scrutiny from international sanctions bodies. The sanctions follow reports stating that Lebanese authorities were preparing to shut down all branches of Al-Qard Al-Hassan as part of a broader effort to close currency exchange offices and financial entities allegedly linked to Hezbollah. Lebanese officials later downplayed those reports, denying any closures.

Iraq's Federal Court throws out lawsuits on Kurdistan salaries

Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq's Federal Supreme Court on Monday dismissed two lawsuits concerning the disbursement of salaries in the Kurdistan Region, citing a lack of jurisdiction in both cases. The first suit (No. 107) targeted Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Finance Minister Taif Sami, demanding a ruling to keep employee salaries in the Region insulated from political dispute and the current agreement between Baghdad and Erbil. A second lawsuit (No. 104), also against Minister Sami, sought to compel the federal government to release monthly payments to public servants, retirees, families of martyrs, and recipients of social support—regardless of disagreements over the Budget Law or other related issues.
