Rio Ferdinand lands new Man Utd role after being surprise presence alongside Ruben Amorim on pre-season tour

DEVIL YOU KNOW Rio Ferdinand lands new Man Utd role after being surprise presence alongside Ruben Amorim on pre-season tour RIO FERDINAND is set for a bigger involvement with Manchester United - after having a formal role on their US tour. Former United and England defender Ferdinand, 46, was a surprise presence as Ruben Amorim's side played in New Jersey, Chicago and Atlanta in the Premier League Summer Series. 1 Rio Ferdinand has landed a new job at Man Utd Credit: Rex Ferdinand made promotional appearances with some of United's partner companies as well as starring in front of the cameras for player interviews and matchday content as part of a short-term contract. His decision to leave TNT Sports at the end of last season has opened the way for Ferdinand to work for United on a freelance basis. The one-time England skipper has maintained good relationships with the club since hanging up his boots in 2015. And while there is no permanent or official 'staff' arrangement, United anticipate continuing to engage Ferdinand for work on what is viewed as an 'ad hoc basis' in the coming months. That will see Ferdinand asked to undertake both commercial and media work with United, as happened in the USA. Both sides felt the American experience was a real positive making it 'likely' that it will be repeated going forwards. United have also engaged Gary Neville in a similar capacity and expect to repeat that as well. Meanwhile, Ferdinand's TNT Sports replacement will be Gareth Bale. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS The deal for the 2025-26 campaign will see the former Real Madrid and Wales forward on screens for Premier League and Champions League matches. Bale will join TNT's lineup of Peter Crouch and Joe Cole in their live Premier League slot on Saturday afternoon. 'You ain't well man' - Rio Ferdinand screams at Wayne Rooney's driving as Man Utd stars reunite for US road trip Owen Hargreaves, Steve McManaman, Ally McCoist and Karen Carney will remain as the broadcaster's other leading pundits.

Irish teenage jockey ecstatic after landing first Grade One victory of career

Irish teenage jockey Billy Loughnane was lost for words after landing the first Grade One victory of his young career. The 19-year-old teamed up with veteran middle-distance star Rebel's Romance in Germany this weekend to record the biggest win of his career to date. Loughnane only got the ride at the last minute as Godolphin's number one jockey William Buick was due to be in action at Deauville, only for his horse to be a late non-runner, paving the way for Loughnane to take his place. In a competitive race, the two-time Champion apprentice jockey (2023 and 2024) kept Rebel's Romance in second position for much of the race, before ultimately displacing the front-running Junko to take home the win by a quarter of a length. Speaking after the win, the British based Irish jockey said: 'It's a feeling I can't describe, a feeling of ecstasy. What a star of a horse. I'm very lucky to be riding in these colours and to have the opportunity to sit on a horse like this. 'He's a star of a horse. Big thanks to Will [Buick]. I spoke to him last night and he told me exactly what to do.' His father, Mark, was at Wolverhampton at the time of the ride, and told Sky Sports: "It's something he's dreamt of all his life. I had an even-money favourite in the first race but I was more watching my phone and watching Billy. As a dad I'm proud as punch." Young Loughnane has been destined for greatness since bursting onto the scene as a youngster. At just 19, it's fair to say that the teenager - who doesn't turn 20 until next March - has plenty more Grade 1's to come.

Roy Keane shows true colours as he enjoys relaxing birthday surrounded by family

For many years, Roy Keane was seen as the hot-headed hardman at the heart of the Manchester United midfield, the driving force behind Alex Ferguson's legendary teams. And while his punditry can still often be fiery, it's fair to say that the Corkman has shown a different side to his character in recent times. Indeed, the former Ireland captain is seen more as a comedy figure than a fearful one these days, with his appearances on Sky Sports TV and the Stick to Football podcast showing a lighter shade to the seven time Premier League winner. Even something as trivial as an Instagram account would have seen farcical up until a few years ago, but Keane is a big fan of the social media platform and often posts pictures of his family for his 2.3 million followers. This weekend, Keane turned 54 and took to social media to show his followers how he enjoyed his big day. Captioning his post "Happy Birthday to me. All the gifts I need," Keane shared snaps of himself on holiday with his family. In the pictures, Keane can be seen relaxing on an inflatable float in a pool and playing with his grandchildren, even throwing one up into the air while in a pool at one point. While his demeanour may have changed in recent years, Keane can still be as sharp tongued as ever when appearing as a pundit on Sky Sports. He predominantly saves his harshest criticism for ex-club Manchester United, who drew the ire of the Irishman on many occasions last year as they finished 15th in the league and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. With a full pre-season in the bag, and a host of new signings, United boss Ruben Amorim will be hoping for a much easier ride this season, and will no doubt be hoping to stay in Keane's good books as the campaign progresses.
