Trump announces US trade pact with Vietnam
The rate is lower than an initial 46% levy Trump announced in April on goods from Vietnam which was due to take effect next week.
Trump said that goods from Vietnam would face a 20% tariff and that any trans-shipments from third countries would face a 40% levy. Details were scarce and it was not immediately clear how the trans-shipment provision would be implemented.
Vietnam would also provide the United States with more market access, with US exports to the country facing no tariffs, Trump said. That agreement appears to include US exporters of large-engine cars, according to Trump and Vietnamese state media.
'It is my Great Honor to announce that I have just made a Trade Deal with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,' Trump said on Truth Social.
'It is my opinion that the SUV or, as it is sometimes referred to, Large Engine Vehicle, which does so well in the United States, will be a wonderful addition to the various product lines within Vietnam,' Trump said.
Vietnamese President Tô Lâm asked in a phone call with Trump earlier on Wednesday that the United States recognize Vietnam as a market economy and remove restrictions on the exports of high-tech products to the country, Vietnam News Agency reported. Those changes have long been sought by Hanoi and dismissed by Washington.
Since Trump imposed tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars in Chinese goods in his first term, US trade with Vietnam has exploded, though almost all of it in the form of goods to the United States from Vietnam as importers sought workarounds for the China levies.
Since 2018, Vietnam's exports are up nearly three-fold from less than $50bn that year to about $137bn in 2024, Census Bureau data shows. US exports to Vietnam are up only about 30% in that time – to just over $13bn last year from less than $10bn in 2018.
The White House and the Vietnamese trade ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Trump announced a wave of tariffs for countries around the world on 2 April, before pausing the implementation of most duties until 9 July. More than a dozen countries are actively negotiating with the Trump administration to avoid a steep spike in tariffs on their exports.
The Trump administration has teased that a deal with India is also coming soon, but it has said that others may not be ready by 9 July.
Britain negotiated a limited trade deal with the Trump administration, accepting a 10% US tariff on many goods, including autos, in exchange for special access for aircraft engines and British beef.
Like the agreement struck with Britain in May, the one with Vietnam resembles more a framework than a finalized trade pact.

Meghan Markle's As Ever wine goes on sale for wild price per bottle... but it is already SOLD OUT
Meghan Markle 's As Ever rosé wine is now available for purchase for a steep price - but it is already sold out. On Tuesday, the sales for the wine went live, with customers able to purchase three bottles for $90, six bottles for $159, and 12 bottles for $300. If you bought the six bottle package, Meghan promised that you were receiving 12 per cent off, while a 12-pack gets you a 17 per cent saving. Daily Mail exclusively revealed this week that the alcoholic beverage is made by Fairwinds Estate, a California winery that creates bespoke wines for celebrities, as they've now added Meghan to their list of clients. When FEMAIL in New York went to purchase a bundle of the wine, we weren't asked for proof of ID - only our birthday. In New York State, there are strict rules about the shipping of wine, as 'manufacturers in other states can make direct shipments of wine, distilled spirits, cider, mead, and braggot to New York residents with an Out-of-State Direct Shipper's License,' per the state's website. The state also requires that the manufacturer must require the customer to represent that they are 21 or older at purchase (and on delivery provide proof that they are 21 years of age or older) and that the alcohol is being purchased for personal use only. Wine shipped to New York must also be labeled in a specific way, as the package must read, 'signature of person age 21 or older required for delivery.' So, in New York, you may be able to order the wine online, but you will need to show proof of identity and age in order to accept the package. But while it may be simple for anyone of age to get their hands on Meghan's As Ever wine, a supplier like Total Wine won't even ship wine to New York State. Other websites, like Wine Access, however, follow As Ever's lead and only ask for a birthdate upon ordering. The As Ever wine is the first alcoholic product to be sold under the brand, and will join her current rolodex of raspberry and apricot spreads, cookie mixes, flower sprinkles and herbal teas - all of which received a less-than-perfect review by FEMAIL. However, Caitlin Jardine, a Social Media Manager at Ellis Digital, previously shared with Daily Mail that The Duchess could risk 'alienating' some fans with the boozy introduction. Jardine noted that Meghan will be 'entering a highly competitive and established market' that is 'most likely to appeal to a more expansive audience, particularly those who see wine as more than just something to drink but an accessory to their lifestyle.' 'However, having already associated herself with all things wellness, this could alienate some of her fan base who feel as though she is going against her core wellness-centered brand image, different to her existing line of products, with the potential to contradict her values around mindful living,' Jardine explained. But it is not all bad news for the entrepreneur. 'What it does do is add versatility to her current line of As Ever products, reflecting a more modern, balanced lifestyle,' she shared. 'Rather than one that is more rigid and "clean," it reflects one that is more in tune with her diverse audience and how they live.' Jardine noted that in the past, Meghan has faced criticism from the public about her lack of relatability - and thinks this new line of rosé could help recover her image. Meghan's July 1 wine launch is her second in just a matter of weeks. On June 20, she released a new apricot spread and limited-edition orange blossom honey - but unfortunately, her infamous raspberry spread was nowhere to be found.

Gold and its miners may enjoy a 'critical mineral' upgrade
LAUNCESTON, Australia, July 3 (Reuters) - Is gold the next metal to be added to the list of "critical minerals"? Gold is not a vital component of advanced manufacturing like other critical minerals such as rare earths, lithium and copper. But the precious metal appears to be undergoing a subtle shift in how it is viewed by governments and investors. Since countries moved away from the gold standard by the early 1970s, gold has largely been viewed as a relatively niche part of investment portfolios and government reserves. Gold was something that was added to portfolios as an inflation hedge or during times of heightened geopolitical tensions. In some ways, the role of gold in both central bank and investment portfolios was overtaken by bonds, with U.S. Treasuries becoming the most important of these assets. But the return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency is leading to a global reassessment of the relative safety of U.S. assets, the independence of the Federal Reserve and the likely worsening of the U.S. fiscal position. Add in Trump's attacks on the rule of law in the United States and the likely hit to both the U.S. and global economies from his trade policies, and the stage is set for a reevaluation of the role of gold. The precious metal has gained 32.3% from a low of $2,536.71 an ounce hit on November 14 in the days after Trump's victory over his Democratic Party rival, former Vice President Kamala Harris. It reached a record high of $3,500.05 an ounce on April 22, and has since retreated slightly to close at $3,357.08 on Wednesday. While gold's day-to-day moves are still largely driven by the news cycle, the overall backdrop looks supportive. The World Gold Council released a report last month in which it surveyed 73 central banks, and 95% of them expected the official sector to increase holdings in the coming 12 months. "This is a record high since it was first tracked in the 2019 survey and represents a 17% increase from the 2024 findings," the council said. Central banks are also moving to repatriate more of their holdings back to their home countries and away from the United States, a further sign that there is a loss of confidence in U.S. assets and the policies of the Trump administration. Gold is also well-placed as one of the few viable alternatives if more governments, fund managers and private investors outside the United States form the view that the era of U.S. exceptionalism is over and that U.S. Treasuries are now a riskier asset as the country's fiscal position deteriorates. Another factor that is showing the positive story for gold is the performance of gold mining equities. Major gold producers have seen their share prices rise at a far faster pace than the actual metal. There are several reasons why this could be the case, including the expectation that shareholders will receive higher dividend payouts in the future and that companies are being rewarded for showing capital discipline in prior years. But it also may be that investors are starting to re-rate gold mining companies in the expectation that gold becomes a more vital and larger part of portfolios, both public and private. For example, shares in Newmont (NEM.N), opens new tab, the world's largest listed gold miner, have risen 63% from their most recent low on December 30 to close at $60.06 on Wednesday. Canada's Barrick Mining ( opens new tab has seen its shares gain 40.6% in U.S. dollar terms from its recent low on December 19 to the close on Wednesday. Anglogold Ashanti (AU.N), opens new tab shares in New York have surged 108% from the low on December 30 to the close of $46.66 on Wednesday, while Gold Fields (GFIJ.J), opens new tab has seen a gain of 88% in U.S. dollar terms from its November 14 low to the close on Wednesday. If gold does become a more central part of investment strategies, the listed miners are likely to become more attractive, given the difficulty of finding and developing new projects and the long time between exploration and production.
