ASEAN Urged To Tackle Cybercrime Threat With Stronger Legal, Security Cooperation
ASEAN must urgently strengthen regional security cooperation, harmonise legal frameworks and boost information-sharing to counter rising cybercrime and human trafficking threats, Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said.
Delivering his opening remarks at the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting, held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit, Mohamad highlighted the growing scale and severity of cybercrime syndicates that have preyed on thousands across the region.
'Countless ASEAN citizens have been deceived and trafficked into forced labour at scam centres. These operations rob victims of their dignity and savings, while eroding the economies of ASEAN states,' he warned.
He shared that despite ASEAN's recent efforts to dismantle cybercrime networks, syndicates have shown a disturbing ability to regroup and relocate, exploiting gaps in enforcement and cross-border legal coordination.
As the region faces an evolving security landscape shaped by geopolitical rivalry, digital vulnerabilities and economic instability, Mohamad stressed that ASEAN's response must evolve.
'We must enhance the resilience of our digital infrastructure and safeguard cyberspace. The pace of technological advancement demands proactive, collective action,' he said.
The meeting also served as a platform to review progress under the APSC Blueprint 2025, which is in its final implementation phase. The findings from this review will inform the development of the APSC Strategic Plan 2045, a long-term roadmap aligned with the upcoming ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
Mohamad praised the progress made since the last APSC Council meeting in Vientiane in 2024, noting that sectoral efforts have significantly contributed to community-building and regional integration.
'The Strategic Plan 2045 will serve as ASEAN's political-security compass over the next two decades — one anchored in peace, resilience and people-centred values,' he said. Related

HAWANA honours media practitioners, empowers journalism profession
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 is not just a platform to celebrate the role and contribution of media practitioners in the country's development, but also a stage to uphold the integrity and credibility of the journalism profession. Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said the HAWANA celebration also allowed media practitioners to strengthen ties and exchange opinions on current issues. 'This year, although media personnel will be busy covering and reporting various important events, such as the recent 46th ASEAN Summit, we have not forgotten the HAWANA celebration, which has been gazetted for May 29, in our own way,' she said at the HAWANA 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of BERNAMA Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here The event was officiated by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Also present were Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the director of the HAWANA 2025 Project; as well as members of Bernama's top management. Nur-ul Afida said Bernama has been tasked with being the implementing agency for the HAWANA celebration by the Communications Ministry since it was introduced in 2018 in Kuala Lumpur. She said that to ensure the celebration is inclusive and covers all states, HAWANA was held in Melaka in 2022, Perak in 2023 and Kuching, Sarawak last year. 'HAWANA is back in Kuala Lumpur to celebrate Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship this year,' she said. At the event, Nur-ul Afida also expressed her appreciation to its 79 strategic partners, comprising ministries, departments, agencies and companies who are committed to making the HAWANA 2025 highlight and side programmes a success. 'Again, I humbly thank all our strategic partners for your continued support, thus recognising the contributions of media practitioners in the field of journalism in Malaysia,' she said. Nur-ul Afida said HAWANA 2025 would be livelier and more beneficial with the inclusion of various events and activities from May until September, starting with the HAWANA-DBP 2025 Pantun Festival, which saw eight teams from media agencies involved in stiff competition, at Wisma Bernama last Saturday. Other main programmes include a media forum jointly organised with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), a HAWANA carnival and exhibition at the Sunway Putra Mall, a big-scale sports carnival and a HAWANA tour series to leading polytechnics. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', the HAWANA 2025 celebration will be held at the KL World Trade Centre from June 13 to 15, with the highlight celebration on June 14 being officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Over 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media delegates from ASEAN member states are expected to attend, bringing together the professional media fraternity and industry experts to exchange ideas and forge strategic partnerships. Nur-ul Afida also said that the BERNAMA Motorhome, launched today by Fahmi, is a vehicle equipped with mobile studio facilities featuring the latest technology. She added that this is an initiative by Bernama, which celebrated its 58th anniversary last month, to remain relevant in the media industry. 'We, at Bernama, are committed to continuing to strive to implement our goals as the country's official news agency and continue to excel as a trusted news source,' she said.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Malaysia and Thailand are entering a new phase of stronger bilateral ties driven by the close relationship between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, says a senior Thai official. Thai foreign minister Maris Sangiampongsa said the rapport between the two leaders reflected a growing partnership focused on cooperation across multiple sectors, especially in border regions, reported Bernama. 'The prime ministers have built a strong bond. This opens up opportunities, not just in trade and investment, but also in security,' he told Bernama during the 46th Asean Summit held here recently. He added that regular communication between both leaders had strengthened mutual understanding and paved the way for more strategic collaboration. Thailand remains a key economic partner for Malaysia. In 2024, it was Malaysia's seventh-largest trading partner globally and third-largest within Asean, with total trade reaching US$25.03 billion (RM114.56 billion). Trade between the two countries rose to US$3.96 billion (RM17.65 billion) from January to February this year, up from US$3.67 billion (RM16.80 billion) in the same period last year. Both governments are committed to developing the shared border into a vibrant economic corridor, focusing on trade, investment, and cross-border infrastructure to enhance connectivity. Efforts are also underway to integrate special border economic zones to further boost trade and investment in the border areas, which currently account for over 30% of total bilateral trade. Maris described joint border development as a model of mutually beneficial cooperation. He pointed to sectors with high potential – including the halal industry, palm oil, and rubber – as areas for further collaboration. 'While both governments can facilitate opportunities, success depends on strong private sector participation,' he said. 'There are solid policies in place that can support greater business collaboration and regional development.' Anwar and Paetongtarn have maintained regular contact through meetings and phone calls. They have met three times to date: in Putrajaya in December, Bangkok in April, and most recently at the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
