Lawyer seeks to disqualify Anwar as PM, Tambun MP

Lawyer P Waytha Moorthy wants the High Court to declare Anwar Ibrahim's election as Tambun MP on Nov 19, 2022, and his appointment as prime minister five days later, null and void.
KUALA LUMPUR : Lawyer P Waytha Moorthy has filed a suit seeking a declaration that Anwar Ibrahim should not have been elected as Tambun MP in November 2022 and appointed prime minister.
He contends this is because Anwar's 2018 royal pardon did not state that he was exempt from the five-year disqualification period for contesting an election after being released from prison.
Waytha, a minister in Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Cabinet from 2018 to 2020, wants the High Court here to declare Anwar's election as Tambun MP on Nov 19, 2022, and his appointment as prime minister five days later, null and void.
The originating summons was filed today at the High Court by solicitors Messrs Karthig Shan, with Anwar named as the defendant.
Waytha, who filed the action in his capacity as a lawyer, said he brought the public interest action to uphold the rule of law, the Federal Constitution and to protect the integrity of Malaysia's parliamentary democracy.
The Malaysian Advancement Party president said Anwar was convicted and sentenced to a jail term exceeding one year, which would disqualify him from being elected as a member of the Dewan Rakyat by Article 48(1)(e) of the Federal Constitution.
He is also seeking other relief deemed fit and proper by the court and costs.
On May 16, 2018, the then king granted Anwar a full pardon for three cases involving abuse of power and sodomy charges, citing a 'miscarriage of justice'.
Anwar told a press conference that the pardon was also on the basis that there was a conspiracy to condemn him and assassinate his political character.
'The pardon is complete and unconditional. The entire convictions are erased automatically,' he had said.
Anwar was then elected Port Dickson MP in a by-election in October 2018.
A similar suit filed by a voter to question his eligibility to stand in the by-election was thrown out by the High Court in 2018.
Waytha contended that the pardon order did not express the removal of the five-year exemption from May 16, 2018, the date of Anwar's release from prison.
He said Article 48(3) of the Federal Constitution bars Anwar from contesting a Dewan Rakyat seat for five years after the pardon, and as such the PKR president had misrepresented himself as qualified to contest in the 2022 general election.
He said Anwar's five-year disqualification period was still effective at the time he filed his nomination papers and got elected on Nov 19, 2022.

Najib Razak's supporters arrived outside the court house as early as 6am today. PUTRAJAYA : Dozens of supporters greeted Najib Razak as he arrived at the Palace of Justice at about 8.30am today, some chanting 'Free Bossku' in a reference to the former prime minister. They had gathered as early as 6am, while several political figures, including former law minister Zaid Ibrahim, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, and Supreme Council member Mahdzir Khalid were also present. The Federal Court is scheduled to deliver its decision today on whether the attorney-general may appeal against the leave granted to Najib to pursue judicial review proceedings aimed at enforcing a former king's house arrest decree. A three-member bench, led by Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim and comprising Federal Court judges Zabariah Yusof and Hanipah Farikullah, will deliver the ruling. Najib, who was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million in SRC International Sdn Bhd funds, has been serving his sentence at Kajang prison since Aug 23, 2022. He filed a petition for a royal pardon on Sept 2, 2022. The Federal Territories Pardons Board later halved his prison term from 12 years to six and reduced his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.

Asean set to adopt AI safety network at 47th summit in 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — A declaration on the establishment of the ASEAN AI Safety Network (ASEAN AI Safe) is targeted for adoption by leaders at the 47th ASEAN Summit, said ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn. He said this represents a crucial step toward institutionalising AI safety, ethics, and governance principles as endorsed by ASEAN Digital Ministers while supporting the implementation of the ASEAN Responsible AI Roadmap. 'The establishment of ASEAN AI Safe aligns with global calls for an international network to tackle AI safety risks through collaboration among governments, academia and industry. 'ASEAN AI Safe underscores the commitment to responsible AI development and looks forward to the network's formal establishment by early 2026,' he said during the special address at the ASEAN Artificial Intelligence (AI) Malaysia Summit 2025 yesterday. At the event, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched a Malaysian home-grown AI known as 'ILMU', built by YTL AI Labs, in partnership with Universiti Malaya. Kao emphasised that despite ongoing volatility and uncertainty in global trade, the world is witnessing a transformative growth of AI in reshaping every aspect of economies, societies and daily lives. Hence, he said, the first ever ASEAN AI Summit has provided a timely opportunity to deepen regional cooperation and build strategic trust around a shared vision with innovation and inclusive development to guide the collective journey into a new era of digital transformation. Kao said AI is expected to contribute a gross domestic product of 10 to 18 per cent, equivalent to nearly US$1 trillion by 2030. Besides, he said this year, ASEAN is prioritising on the ASEAN Digital Economic Framework Agreement (DEFA) to build on the regional digital ecosystem, which could potentially double its projection to US$2 trillion by 2030. — Bernama
