Australia's Ampol profit slumps but resilient despite weather hits
Aug 18 (Reuters) - Australia's top fuel retailer Ampol ( opens new tab reported a 23% drop in its first-half profit on Monday, hurt by weak refinery margins and operational and weather-related disruptions, though the result was better than what the market had feared. Shares of the fuel retailer drifted within tight ranges in early trade, and were down 0.2% at A$29.08 as of 0115 GMT, after rising 0.7% earlier in the session. That compared with a largely flat broader ASX 200 benchmark index (.AXJO), opens new tab. The company said Lytton's refinery margins started the second half strongly, with July being $9.95 per barrel, up from $7.44 per barrel in the first half. Planned maintenance shutdowns and production losses from a cyclone disrupted operations, while weak Singapore refining margins pressured profitability at its Queensland refinery. The refinery's underlying operating earnings shrank substantially to A$1.1 million ($716,650.00), from A$89.5 million a year ago, while earnings from its fuel and infrastructure division also nearly halved to A$118.3 million. As a result, the company's net profit after tax from continuing operations for the six months ended June 30 fell to A$180.2 million on a replacement-cost basis, 23% lower than A$233.7 million a year ago, but beating the Visible Alpha consensus estimate of A$165.6 million. Ampol declared an interim dividend of 40 Australian cents per share, lower than 60 Australian cents per share paid out a year ago. The fuel retailer flagged that trends for its fuel and infrastructure division, excluding Lytton, convenience retail and New Zealand segments are expected to largely continue from the first half. "We don't expect material consensus estimate changes, which will allow the market to focus on upside from the impending EG Group acquisition," Jefferies analysts wrote. The company announced last week it would buy British fuel station operator EG Group's local unit, EG Australia, for a total of A$1.1 billion. ($1 = 1.5349 Australian dollars)

British manufacturers lagging behind international competitors on automation
Use of robotics and AI systems was poor, with training of people in relevant digital skills well below what is needed to catch up, it was warned. The report by Make UK and Sage said nearly half of British manufacturers identify a lack of technical skills as the biggest hurdle to improving their use of innovative advanced technologies. Projects which do start often stall after implementation stage, because companies cannot find the help and advice they need to make the technologies work well. Seamus Nevin, chief economist at Make UK said: 'Time and again, we hear from small and medium-sized manufacturers that they're keen to adopt new technologies, but are being held back by fragmented support, complex funding systems, and a lack of accessible, appropriate digital skills training. 'If we want to unlock a £150 billion boost to UK GDP by 2035, we must make it easier for SMEs to adopt automation and AI.' A Government spokesperson said: 'We are taking a range of actions to remove the barriers holding back growth and unleash the potential of AI in our economy, including through the AI opportunities action plan. 'Our modern industrial strategy has also introduced ambitious plans to drive growth and investment across the UK, and our Plan for Change will ensure our country continues to be the best place to invest and do business.'

EasyJet launches cabin crew recruitment drive targeting young people
The airline is set to take on almost 1,000 new cabin crew for 2026, and is encouraging young adults and school leavers to consider applying. New research commissioned by easyJet of 2,000 16 to 24-year-olds showed there were still misconceptions around the role of cabin crew which prevented them from pursuing it as a career. More than nine in 10 of those surveyed were unaware there are no minimum educational qualifications required to apply for the job, with two in three believing they would be under-qualified for cabin crew training. As a result, almost nine in 10 said they had never considered a career working for an airline. Michael Brown, director of cabin services at easyJet, said: 'We want to show young people that being cabin crew is more than just a job – it's a career filled with variety, teamwork and opportunity, which has so much to offer to so many people as well as offering a pathway to progress in working within our wider industry too. 'If you have enthusiasm, people skills and a willingness to learn something new, our taster sessions could be the perfect first step towards a new opportunity.' Aviation minister Mike Kane said: 'It's fantastic to see British firm easyJet investing in our young people, encouraging and inspiring them into careers in aviation. 'We are determined to break down barriers to opportunity in the UK to deliver our Plan for Change so everyone can pursue and progress in rewarding careers.'
