Delhi CM urges people to plant trees in mothers' honour, launches ‘Van Mahotsav'

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta called upon people on Thursday to plant saplings in tribute to their mothers under the government's 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' initiative.
The CM kicked off the Tree Plantation Campaign 2025 from PBG Ground in Delhi Ridge area where she planted a sapling in memory of her mother, urging residents to plant as many trees as possible in and around their homes, neighborhoods, schools, offices, and community spaces.
On this occasion, the CM said a new era is emerging in Delhi's green heritage through this year's 'Van Mahotsav'. She alleged that past governments neither participated in, nor paid attention to meaningful initiatives like 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' campaign.
Tree plantation efforts were long neglected. However, she expressed satisfaction at the 2025 Van Mahotsav, organised by the Delhi government, being designed with active public participation at its core.
The CM further said trees are not merely tools for cleaning the environment but are living guardians to provide clean air to future generations.
'With this in mind, the government has set an ambitious target of planting more than 7 million saplings this year,' the CM said, urging Delhiites to join the movement and treat tree plantation as collective social responsibility.
'If an individual plants at least one tree annually, and commits to its care, Delhi can once again move towards becoming a greener and cleaner city in near future,' she added.

Give 2 months' notice before firing Mohalla Clinic staff, HC tells govt.

The Delhi High Court has directed the Delhi government to provide two months' notice to staff members of Mohalla Clinics in case it proposes to terminate their services before March 31 next year. The court's order came while dealing with a petition filed by staff members of Mohalla Clinics hired on a contractual basis by the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. The petitioners, employed as pharmacists, assistants, and multitask workers, had sought directions against their termination and replacement with other contractual employees. The BJP government has decided to roll out a network of Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (U-AAMs) and subsume Mohalla Clinics, a flagship programme of the previous AAP government. The court's August 6 order disposed of the petition with the direction that 'in the event the respondents [Delhi government] propose to terminate the petitioners' engagement before March 31, 2026, on the ground that new manpower has been engaged..., they are directed to give two weeks' notice to the concerned... (staff)'. The staff members had submitted that some of them have been telephonically instructed not to report for duty. The counsel for the Delhi government had submitted that no decision has been taken by the authorities to dispense with the services of any employees of Mohalla Clinics. As of August 2023, 533 Mohalla Clinics were operational in Delhi, providing healthcare services to the city's residents. However, at least seven Mohalla Clinics have already been converted into U-AAMs under the Centre's Ayushman Bharat scheme. Following a protest on May 17 by the staff of Mohalla Clinics, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had given them an assurance that existing paramedical and support staff would be adjusted within U-AAMs.

Atishi writes to CM over water crisis in Kalkaji after reservoir submergence

New Delhi: Leader of the opposition in Delhi Assembly, Atishi , wrote a letter to chief minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday, saying parts of Kalkaji, her constituency, faced a water crisis due to submergence of the Giri Nagar underground reservoir pumping station after the overnight rain. She charged the BJP-led govt with "stalling and collapsing" within just six months and its failure to protect critical infrastructure and manage monsoon-related challenges. No reaction was available from the CM office or the BJP. Atishi alleged that the situation turned critical when the Giri Nagar UGR pumping station, which supplies water to Kalkaji, Giri Nagar, Govindpuri and Govindpuri Extension, was fully submerged. "The pumps stopped functioning, resulting in a complete halt to water supply in these areas," Atishi said, adding that the residents were facing at least 2–3 days of severe water shortage, with no alternate arrangements You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi "I urge you to give urgent directions to your PWD and water minister Parvesh Verma to take immediate steps to restore water supply in the area. Private school fee Bill to improve transparency, accountability: Delhi CM

Delhi government is committed to ensuring quality education for every child in the national capital, and the recently-passed Bill to regulate fees in private schools will bring greater transparency and accountability in the institutions, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday. Addressing a press conference, Gupta said the Delhi School Education (Fee Determination and Transparency in Regulation) Bill, 2025, which was passed in Delhi Assembly on Friday, seeks to prevent arbitrary fee hikes and make private schools accessible to children from all sections of society, including those from underprivileged backgrounds. "There are 1,733 private schools in Delhi, nearly 300 of which were given land at concessional rates by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA)," Gupta said. "Under the new law, the director of education will have powers equivalent to those of a sub-divisional magistrate to take action against schools violating norms, including freezing bank accounts and attaching property," she added. The chief minister said the provisions will apply to all the private schools in Delhi, not just those allotted DDA land, and that fines ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 lakh will be imposed for unauthorised fee hikes, with the penalty doubling in case of delayed payment. Gupta said the Bill was drafted after consultations with education experts and parents, with a focus on protecting parents' interests without putting undue pressure on the schools. Criticising the previou AAP government, she alleged that despite tall claims of an education revolution, the sector was plagued by corruption and inefficiency. "If you were truly concerned about education, why didn't you create a legal framework to control school fees in the past 27 years," she asked the AAP and the Congress, which were in power during that period. The chief minister also said that schools will now have to justify any proposed fee hike based on factors such as location, facilities, expenditure, and teaching quality, and that parents will have the veto power over such increases. "This Bill is a shield for the dreams of Delhi's children. No one will be allowed to put a price on their aspirations," she added.
