Want to Hear More of Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor Singing? Us, Too
Paul Mescal is sitting in bed looking sad and gorgeous again. That seems to be a recurring theme throughout a number of the movie star's most famous projects (think: Aftersun, Normal People, and All of Us Strangers), but his upcoming film, The History of Sound, deserves particular attention for connecting him with yet another infamously scruffy romantic lead: Josh O'Connor, beloved for his roles in Challengers, La Chimera, and The Crown.
In The History of Sound, adapted from author Ben Shattuck's short story of the same name, Mescal and O'Connor play Lionel and David, both folk music aficionados, who meet in 1917 at the Boston Conservatory. After World War I, they reunite in 1920 to travel through Maine, collecting and preserving traditional folk songs—and embarking on a love affair along the way. The film first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this spring, and ELLE's critic proclaimed the period piece 'quietly epic' and 'a masterclass in tender restraint.'
Here's what we know about the project so far.
Alongside Mescal and O'Connor, the film stars Molly Price, Alison Bartlett, and Chris Cooper, per Deadline—though it seems primarily intended as a star vehicle for its charismatic male leads.
Oliver Hermanus (Living) directed The History of Sound, with cinematography by Alexander Dynan and the screenplay by Shattuck himself.
After its Cannes debut, Mubi bought North American distribution rights, and Focus Features snagged international. In the U.S., The History of Sound will land in theaters on September 12, 2025, with a likely MUBI streaming release to follow.
Yes—and it features both O'Connor and Mescal singing. It'll be well worth the price of a ticket just to hear more.

‘The Summer I Turned Pretty's Christopher Briney on the Peach Scene
Now that we've all watched Conrad's episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3, it's finally time to talk about the peach scene. Taken directly from the books, the scene—in which Conrad and Belly stop by a fruit stand to get some peaches—is undeniably hot (if a little cringey), and has already sent fans into a well-deserved tizzy. Of course, now that Christopher Briney has revealed what was going through Conrad's mind during the peach scene, it's even more delicious. 'I think it's sort of like an Icarus moment where he loses touch with reality for a second,' Chris told Deadline when asked about the scene. 'What's going through his mind?' According to Chris, it totally made sense for Conrad to use his white T-shirt to wipe peach juice off of Belly's chin (all while staring into her soul...) 'As much as I don't think it's a sin to wipe off somebody's face, what else was he gonna use?' he asked. ''Oh, let me go to the car and get a napkin.' There aren't napkins in that car.' So! Conrad wasn't trying to seduce his ex and brother's finacée, or use the peaches as a metaphor for their relationship. He was just being practical! Chris continued, calling the moment a slip-up for Conrad. 'I think that he loses touch with what is correct, and I think puts himself in sort of a dangerous place,' he said. (That said: It might be dangerous for Conrad, but it's heaven for #TeamConrad fans.) And as dreamy and romantic as the peach scene looked on screen, it was much less glamorous on set. 'What was going through my mind was all the gnats that were flying into my mouth because it was awful,' Chris told Deadline. '[Jenny Han] said, as I breathed in, a gnat went into my mouth, and then I breathed out, and it came out. I don't know what it was doing in there, but that's my memory.' Maybe Conrad should have used that shirt to get the gnats out of his mouth instead. Just saying!
