Signor Tortoni chasing third straight win at Royal Randwick
Signor Tortoni has more to give but trainer Ron Quinton isn't sure when punters will see what he knows.
The talented and imposing son of Too Darn Hot will line up on Saturday in The Agency Real Estate 3YO Benchmark 72 Handicap (1300m) at Royal Randwick.
Signor Tortoni is a veteran of just six starts, winning his past two, but Quinton knows there's more under the hood than the gelding has shown despite winning or finishing second on five occasions.

'He's a horse I think we are still to see the best of,' Quinton said.
'From the first time I galloped him he's shown me good ability, trackwork and trials, he's never disappointed.
'In his gallops he can rip off a sectional like nothing else. The times he runs his last furlong only decent horses run.'
Signor Tortoni has started favourite in his past four starts, beaten into second at $2.30 and $1.35 before winning at $1.14 and $1.65 last time out at Canterbury over 1200m.

'His racetrack performances have always been sound but when he can do at home tells me he's capable of more,' Quinton said.
'Jason (Collett) said the other day when he got up outside the leader he just wanted to idle and didn't know how to put the horse away.
'I do think he's going to appreciate getting back onto a big track like Randwick on Saturday.
'He's still learning he craft. When the penny drops, it won't surprise me one bit if he really made a statement.
'I hope that is Saturday but I can't be sure.'

Meanwhile, the Hall of Famer will also saddle up Rantan for his long time clients, the Gall family of I Am Invincible fame.
Rantan is a three-year-old daughter of the owners' super stallion and she has a habit of finding misfortune in races.
Rantan contests the ATC Thank You Owners Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m).
'She's not easy to ride and doesn't help herself,' Quinton said.
'You've got to try to get her to travel smoothly, to give the chance to finish off.
'If Josh (Parr) can find her clear air, she is capable of being in the finish.'

This colt will take improvement from the run and drawn to be prominent. KOKATAHI (10) was good on debut when a three-quarter length third to Central Coast over 1250m at Canterbury on June 18. Followed up with a handy third to Tomato Toastie at Randwick on July 12. Back to maiden grade. THE STARS (6) placed at her last two runs on last campaign and returned with a second to Samarelle at Newcastle. BET: DUKE ATREIDES (8) each-way. AROHA STONE (7) was something beaten here two runs back when badly held up before finishing a nose behind Covert Thinking. Up in grade and found a strongly run 1800m tough when seventh to Aberlour. Back in grade and back to the mile suits. AUDREY'S LANE (3) resumed from an eight month lay-off with a handy second to Bella Corazon when giving away 3kg. With the benefit of that run, she came from midfield to beat the in-form California Secret at Newcastle. AUTUMN DREAM (6) was very good winning at Kembla last start. Ready to step up to city company. BET: AROHA STONE (7) each-way. TAZIMA (5) settled three back on the rails before running home strongly late for a three-quarter length fourth to Sammy Conquers All over 1400m on the Kensington at his Australian debut. Won over 2011m at his second and last run in England. FIORSUM FRED (9) was very unlucky at Tamworth two starts ago when held up. He finished eighth to Rajnish but should has gone close to winning. Jumped up in grade and beaten less than three lengths behind Boys Night out in the South Grafton Cup. Drops back sharply in grade and only goes up 2kg. PINK SHALALA (4) and KAPAKIRI (2) have claims. BET: TAZIMA (5) to win. NAVAL COMMISSION (1) should have run a place at the very least at Rosehill last start when held at two vital stages in the last 150m and finishing fifth behind Good Banter. Placed at his previous three runs as he was building in trip. Winner at this track and distance. HOVLAND (8) was beaten a nose second-up at Gosford before a nice win from Magicon over 1800m at Hawkesbury. Stepped up in class when a length fifth to Monarchs Brae on a heavy track at Canterbury. Up to 2200m for the first time and the blinkers come off. MAGICON (10) has been racing well and scored a deserved win over this trip at Grafton last start. BET: NAVAL COMMISSION (1) to win. CASSIEL (1) was kicked off his campaign with a good wins at Canterbury on Apr 21 and at Hawkesbury on June 17. Denied the hat-trick when stepping up to Saturday grade when runner-up to Bundeena in a Bm78 at Randwick. Back in grade and hard to beat. MABEL (6) hasn't won since Nov 2023 but she has run some good races. Was a nose second to Angel Fund in a Randwick Midway in January and was a little unlucky when fourth to Bundeena at Randwick last start. JAMBALAYA (5) resumes after a stylish trial win here on July 8. Has a win and two placings from his three fresh runs. BET: CASSIEL (1) to win. GOLDEN STRAAND (10) was a little green on debut when a length second to Sapphire Rose at Wyong before breaking through with a big Super Maiden win at Gosford. Bordertown abandoned, Gawler rescheduled following rainfall
Significant rainfall across South Australia has forced Racing SA to abandon last Friday's Bordertown meeting, while a postponed Gawler meeting will be held on Sunday. Racing SA had hoped to reschedule the meeting but announced on Monday afternoon that the eight-race card had been abandoned, with no alternate options available in the South East ahead of a scheduled Mount Gambier meeting on Friday, August 8. The postponed Gawler meeting will be held on Sunday (August 3) with minor program changes, two Maiden Plates (2YO & Over, 1200m) have been combined for a Maiden Plate (3YO & Over, 1200m). • Quartet hands Milnes Lightning and premiership A Class One Handicap (1200m) has also been added to the seven-race program. Nominations for the meeting will close at 12pm (ACST) on Tuesday (July 29). Bordertown's abandoned card will be divided at Mount Gambier on August 8. Namibia-born jockey Heavelon Van Der Hoven is shifting from Sydney to Brisbane on a whim and a prayer. With the backing of the strong Annabel and Rob Archibald stable, Van Der Hoven will this week move with his two dogs into his new unit at Ascot, just a stone's throw from the Doomben and Eagle Farm racetracks. The 32-year-old jockey finished his five-year Sydney stint in style last Saturday, steering the Jim and Greg Lee-trained Glorious Moments to victory to secure his first NSW metropolitan win. 'I've always had it in the back of my mind to move up there if the right opportunity comes because I really like Brisbane,' Van Der Hoven said. 'The weather and the atmosphere play a big part. It's more chilled and relaxed and there are nice tracks up there. 'I'm not a city boy. I grew up on a farm (in Reheboth, just south of Windhoek in Namibia) and I like the outdoors. 'Annabel asked 'would you ride for me up there?' and I said 'yeah if you'll support me' and that started the whole thing,' Van Der Hoven recalled. 'I'll try to do my best to be a city rider up here and try to get a few features if possible.' Van Der Hoven said he knew Brisbane-based Irish jockey Robbie Dolan from the days when he used to play golf in Sydney with the Melbourne Cup-winning hoop, but he was not moving north to make friends. • Rutledge's 'omen' win on The Irish written in the stars 'I don't really associate with a lot of racing people. I just keep to my own,' he said. 'Once I'm up there riding, trainers will obviously know that I'm planning to stay and maybe I can go to work for them and show my face around. I'll just put my head down and work hard.'
