Andhra CM to launch ‘Stree Shakti' free bus scheme for women on Aug 15

Amaravati, Aug 12 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will launch 'Stree Shakti', a statewide free bus travel service for women, on August 15 at Pandit Nehru Bus Station in Vijayawada.
The scheme to be launched on Friday afternoon will offer free bus rides to girls, women and transgenders with Andhra Pradesh domicile status, said an official press release on Tuesday.
'Stree Shakti scheme will be launched by the Chief Minister on 15th (Aug 15) afternoon at Pandit Nehru Bus Station in Vijayawada," it said.
During a review meeting on 'Stree Shakti', officials informed the CM that women can travel across the state in the five categories of Pallevelugu, Ultra Pallevelugu, City Ordinary, Metro Express and Express services of Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus services.
They also said that software in epos (electronic point of sale) machines for issuing zero-fare tickets will be updated by August 14.
Naidu instructed officials to ensure a smooth rollout of 'Stree Shakti', including taking feedback from the beneficiaries.

Likewise, he directed officials to complete the repairs of bus stations taken up with a cost of Rs 30 crore by December.
The officials were also directed to undertake a comprehensive study to create a new scheme for auto rickshaw drivers, combining central government schemes. Govt approves procurement of 97 Tejas jets for IAF
The government has approved the proposed procurement of 97 Light Combat Aircraft Tejas fighter jets and six advanced airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft for the Indian Air Force at a cost around Rs 85,000 crore, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The two procurement projects were learnt to have been given the green light by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they said. The Tejas jets will be procured at a cost of around Rs 67,000 crore while the AEW&C project will cost the exchequer around Rs 18,000 crore, it is learnt. Second-hand Airbus-321 planes bought earlier from Air India by the defence ministry will be used for the AEW&C project that is aimed at enhancing the IAF's surveillance and signal intelligence systems. The procurement of the 97 LCA Tejas (MK-1A) comes nearly four years after the defence ministry sealed another deal involving the indigenously-built jet. In February 2021, the defence ministry sealed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas MK-1A jets for the IAF. The single-engine MK-1A will be a replacement for the IAF's MiG-21 fighters. The IAF is looking at inducting the warplanes as the number of its fighter squadrons have gone down to 31 from the officially sanctioned strength of 42. Tejas is a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments. It has been designed to undertake the air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike roles.

Previous govts never paid heed to quality education: Punjab CM Mann
Agency: Chandigarh, Aug 20 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday lashed out at the previous governments, accusing them of never paying attention to imparting quality education to the students. Mann also alleged that instead of imparting education, the government schools were merely mid-day meal centres during the previous regimes. Addressing an event to hand over appointment letters to 271 newly-recruited employees, Mann claimed that earlier the sons and daughters of big leaders studied in convent schools in the hills due to which the government schools were never their thrust areas. In stark stark contrast, Mann claimed, government schools are now being upgraded to 'schools of eminence", adding that it is a proud moment that Punjab has ranked first in the National Achievement Survey conducted by the government of India. He also claimed that 848 students from government schools have qualified for NEET, 265 students cleared JEE mains, while 45 cleared the JEE advanced test. Mann also claimed that they never aspired to join politics but the merciless 'plundering" of the state and its people by the previous regimes forced them to take the plunge. 'These opportunist and greedy leaders ignored the state for their own vested interests due to which people ousted them and paved the way for a new regime to take charge," Mann said. The chief minister also said the AAP government is 'working tirelessly for the development of the state and prosperity of its people", leaving no stone unturned to achieve the goals. Contrary to earlier times when the leaders 'jeopardised" the interests of Punjab, the government today is focusing on the overall growth and prosperity of Punjab, he claimed. Mann also said that the leaders earlier were skeptical of meeting the people, whereas his government is 'working solely on the basis of their feedback". 'Every effort will be made to safeguard the interests of the state and its people by making them an active partner in the socio-economic development of the state," the chief minister said. On employment, Mann claimed the AAP government gave more than 55,000 jobs to the youth during the first three years of its rule. 'The previous governments gave miniscule number of jobs to the youth at the fag end of their tenures. But ever since my first day in office, I made sure that the deserving youth get jobs due to which 55,000 of them have got government jobs", Mann claimed. Mann also exhorted the newly-recruited youth to become an integral part of the government, saying they should serve people with missionary zeal now. The chief minister hoped that the new recruits will use their pens to help the needy and underprivileged sections of society. Tungabhadra dam crest gate replacement underway: Ktaka Deputy CM Shivakumar
Last Updated: Bengaluru, Aug 20 (PTI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday said the work to replace all 33 crest gates of the Tungabhadra dam is underway. According to Shivakumar, the Tungabhadra Board has awarded the contract to an Ahmedabad-based firm, and fabrication of six gates is taking place in Gadag and Hosapete with the assistance of JSW Steel. Necessary equipment has started arriving, and engineers in Andhra Pradesh have been asked to accelerate the work. He has also directed that more agencies be brought in to accelerate the project. 'For safety reasons, only 80 TMC of water can be stored, so it is not possible to release water for the second crop this year," the Deputy CM told the Legislative Assembly. If water is released, the crest gate installation would be hampered. Drinking water and industrial supply would continue as usual, and urgent repair works would be taken up, he added. 'As suggested by experts like Kannaiah Naidu, only 76 per cent storage — about 80 TMC — will be maintained. The Tungabhadra Board has taken this decision. Our state has no authority on this board. Whether others give money or not, we are ready to bear the cost to save the dam. We will protect our farmers as well as theirs." Karnataka bears 66 per cent of the repair cost while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together share the remaining 33 per cent. 'Andhra Pradesh has not earmarked any funds. I told officials we will pay even their share, but they are not willing to take it. We came forward to pay because we don't want our farmers to suffer," he said. Shivakumar also mentioned that he made three unsuccessful attempts to discuss the balancing reservoir at Navile with the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister. 'I even sent a team to hold talks, but they did not respond. I do not know why the Chief Minister did not give time, perhaps because more water is going to them," he remarked. He pointed out that the dam's capacity has reduced to 105 TMC due to silt, and a detailed plan to build the balancing reservoir, costing Rs 11,000 crore, was submitted to the Tungabhadra Board on November 22, 2024. 'There has been no response despite letters and discussions. I wrote to the Chief Ministers of both states on February 14, 2025, and also spoke to the concerned ministers," he said. Separately, a survey of all dams in Karnataka has been conducted due to technical concerns that arose at the Kabini dam. Shivakumar said, 'The life of a crest gate is about 50 years, so we are focusing on safety." Recalling last year's incident when the 19th gate broke off, he said, 'A replacement stop gate was installed within a week and disaster was averted. Many, including opposition leaders, criticised us. I accepted the criticism happily because criticism dies, but work remains." The Bajal Committee recommended immediate replacement of all gates, and Shivakumar said the government has acted accordingly. 'The process will take at least eight months," he said. The Tungabhadra project began in 1945 and water flow to canals started in 1953. Karnataka's share is 138.99 TMC, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together get 73 TMC. Irrigation benefits cover 9.26 lakh hectares, including 3.75 lakh hectares in Koppal, Raichur, Ballari and Vijayanagara districts, Shivakumar said.
