Boxing-Two Japanese fighters on same card die from brain injuries
Two Japanese boxers have died days after suffering brain injuries in separate fights on the same card, boxing associations and media reports said.
Shigetoshi Kotari died on Friday and Hiromasa Urakawa on Saturday after being injured in their fights at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on August 2, Japanese media said. Both 28-year-old boxers underwent operations for subdural haematoma, or bleeding inside the skull, the reports said.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the Japanese boxing community during this incredibly difficult time," the World Boxing Organization said in a statement on Saturday about Urakawa, who had lost to Yoji Saito in a knockout.
Kotari died as a result of the injury he sustained while fighting Yamato Hata to a draw in 12 rounds, the World Boxing Council said on Friday.
"The WBC and its President, Mauricio Sulaiman, deeply mourn this irreparable loss and wish his family and friends strength during this difficult time," the WBC said in a statement.
Another boxer, 28-year-old Irish super-featherweight fighter John Cooney, died of a brain injury this year after being stopped in his first Celtic title defence in February. REUTERS

The America's Cup, billed as the oldest trophy in international sport, was retained by New Zealand last October in Barcelona when they beat Britain. NYYC are the most successful team with 25 titles. 'As the three-time successive winner and Defender of the America's Cup and along with the RNZYS (Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron) as current Trustee, we feel the responsibility to continue to drive the growth of the America's Cup event,' Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton said in a statement. In this and in all my lives,' the model captioned the photo in her native Spanish. Immediately, the oval-cut ring had people talking. Some people compared the diamond ring to a Ring Pop, the lollipop candy, and others joked that it was probably so expensive that it could save world hunger. 'To wear this stone regularly, you're going to need a finger reconstruction surgery,' Julia Chafe, a jewellery-focused social media influencer, said in a video on Instagram. 'Usually when you see even celebrity proposals, it's around 2 to 3 carats or maybe 5 carats,' Walsh said. 'This ring is in a league of its own. It's taking a good third of her finger, size-wise.' But it did remind her of a few other rings worn by celebrities and socialites. Walsh estimated the cost of Rodríguez's ring to be at least US$5 million (S$6.4 million), and the total weight to be around 35 carats. I can guess there's going to be an uptick in oval diamonds for sure, but will people want larger diamonds now?' Oval diamonds are popular for their romantic, soft look. 'Even though this is a huge diamond, it has that sort of contour where it's quite delicate,' Walsh said. After the round brilliant ring, the oval diamond is the second most popular choice at 77 Diamonds, generating about 20 per cent of total sales. 'Because it's an elongated diamond, it helps also make your hand seem a bit more slender, a bit finer than a more geometric or rectangular-looking stone,' Walsh added. Rodríguez's engagement ring also appears to be flanked by two smaller oval diamond side stones, which is called a trilogy design. The three diamonds typically signify the past, present and future. Olivia Landau, founder of the Clear Cut, a jeweller in New York, said the side stones appeared to be around 3 carats each. She predicted that the three-stone ring, with three ovals, would be more popular now, though on a smaller scale. Donnarumma appears set to move after PSG signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille, before Enrique left the Italian out of his squad for the Uefa Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur on Aug 13. 'These are always difficult decisions to make. I can only speak highly of Donnarumma,' the Spaniard told a press conference in Udine. 'He is one of the best players in his position, without any doubt. He is even better as a person, but we were looking for a different profile of goalkeeper. It's my decision, and the club supports me.
