Kajol Reveals On-Set Disagreements With Ajay Devgn During ‘Maa': 'We Both Came Out...'

Last Updated: Kajol opens up on working with Ajay Devgn in Maa, tackling horror for the first time, and her personal rituals before filming. In a candid conversation on IMDb's original series Behind The Scenes, Kajol opened up about her experience working on Maa, the latest addition to Ajay Devgn's expanding Shaitaan universe. Directed by Vishal Furia and starring Kajol alongside Ronit Roy and Indraneil Sengupta, Maa marks Kajol's first foray into the horror genre—an unexpected turn for the actor best known for her iconic roles in drama and romance. While the film explores the realm of mythological horror with roots in the Kaali Maa and Rakta Beej legend, Kajol admitted she was never a fan of horror to begin with. 'I'm on the opposite spectrum of a fan really, as far as horror is concerned," she said. 'Earlier when I got a few scripts, the emphasis was always on the genre more than the story—and that always bothered me. Maa started out as a concept based on one of my favourite mythological stories. I'm a mythology buff, and this is a mytho-horror being attempted for the first time." The actor also touched upon the challenges of stepping into an unfamiliar cinematic space. 'The Green Screen and the VFX were the most challenging. The pitch of a horror film is driven by what you want the audience to feel, and that requires a bit of exaggeration, especially in performance. For someone like me, who prefers subtlety, that's a real shift. And of course, the action—no one knows how much physicality is involved in horror besides those acting in it." The interview took a personal turn when Kajol revealed what it was like collaborating with husband Ajay Devgn, who produced the film. 'There were no fights, but a few disagreements—which are pretty common between couples. Some were personal, some were not, but both ways, we both came out on top." She also shared the small but meaningful rituals she performs before starting any project. 'I always take God's name before leaving the house. If I'm starting a film, I run it by my mother and touch her feet for blessings. Ideally, I would love for her to be there on the first day of whatever I shoot." With Maa, Kajol not only explores new creative territory but also joins forces with her real-life partner to deliver a genre-defying story that blends mythology, emotion, and supernatural terror. The film is now streaming and continues to draw attention for its ambitious storytelling and unique premise. First Published:

Meet superstar who is now doing Rs. 1000 crore film, but once delivered a superflop, couldn't even recover its budget, the actor is.., the film was... In the unpredictable world of cinema, numerous factors contribute to a film's success, with casting a superhit star being a major one. However, sometimes even the biggest superstars can't guarantee box office triumph. One such similar tale belongs to the brightest name in the industry, Mahesh Babu. Even after delivering many successful performances and blockbuster hits, there was one film that didn't live up to the expectations of the audience. Brahmotsavam- A massive flop The film that we are talking about is none other than Brahmotsavam. It was released in the year 2016 with the motive of strengthening his clean image; however, it didn't resonate with the audience. The film was made on a humongous budget of Rs. 75 crores; however, it couldn't even recover its cost and earned only Rs. 65 crores at the box office. This multi-starred film featuring Mahesh Babu, Kajal Aggarwal, and Samantha Ruth Prabhu had set the expectation very high for the audience; however, it failed to deliver the same at the box office. Unmet Expectations The audience found the storyline confusing and overly dramatic. While some couldn't connect with the emotional angle, others found it quite slow and boring. The film also struggled critically and received an IMDb rating of 4 out of 10. However, despite the disconnect from the story, people still praised the performances of Mahesh Babu, Samantha, and Kajal, but even their names and stardom couldn't save the movie from failing at the box office. Director Srikanth Addala also expected this family entertainer to garner love and appreciation from everyone. Unfortunately, the execution didn't match the ambition, and the film ended up being labelled as one of the weakest in Mahesh Babu's career. Brahmotsavam story is a reminder that sometimes even the biggest stars can have setbacks despite their hard-earned name and fame over the years.
