"We had to get Michael and Scottie out of the locker room" - Malone recalled how obsessed MJ and Pippen were with shutting down Kukoc in 1992 originally appeared on Basketball Network.
In the summer of 1992, many consider the greatest team ever assembled in basketball history to be formed, led by Michael Jordan, for the Olympic Games in Barcelona. Everyone expected a punishing expedition that would restore international honor and glory to Team USA after losing to Yugoslavia at the 1990 FIBA World Cup.
In the meantime, Yugoslavia had broken up, and Croatia, one of the newly formed countries, had Drazen Petrovic, Toni Kukoc, and Dino Radja, as well as players who had reached NBA-level talent, like Stojan Vrankovic and Zan Tabak.
At that time, the NBA caught the Chicago Bulls fever. Jordan, paired with Scottie Pippen, had just won back-to-back championships, and both were committed to Team USA.
However, leading up to the tournament, the much-hated Jerry Krause, Bulls GM with whom Jordan and Pippen had a terrible relationship, decided to add to the team and bring Kukoc over from Europe.
Toni was by far the biggest European star, having just won three consecutive EuroLeague titles with Croatian powerhouse Jugoplastika. He was also part of the same Yugoslav team that had beaten Team USA two years earlier and was named MVP.
MJ and Pip couldn't wait for the group stage game
Everything Krause did during those days raised eyebrows for Jordan and Pippen. When they heard he was bringing over a skinny white kid from Europe who had just turned 22, while praising him in superlatives, they couldn't wait for the group stage game in Barcelona against Croatia to see Kukoc firsthand and show Krause he was wrong.
Dream Team demolished Croatia by 33 points, handing them their only group-stage loss, and Kukoc was held to just six points. Jordan and Pippen took turns guarding him, and Karl Malone perfectly described just how obsessed they were with Krause's move.
"You ever watch a lion or a leopard or a cheetah pouncing on their prey? We had to get Michael and Scottie out of the locker room, because they was damn near pulling straws to see who guarded him. Kukoc had no idea" Malone said.
"You always want to check people that you're bringing in. Are they tough enough physically and mentally? Can they respond when you need them to respond? I don't think they [had] anything against me personally. They're just testing me. And I later realized that Michael does that [to everyone] on a daily basis," years later recalled Kukoc.
Their full focus was on Kukoc
Subconsciously, Jordan and Pippen knew Krause wouldn't bring in someone he didn't believe could help win a title, but Kukoc had to prove himself against two of the best perimeter defenders of the era. Though he didn't see much action in the group stage, he got his chance in the final.
Despite a 32-point loss in the Finals, Kukoc was one of the best players on the floor. He scored 16 points, nine assists, and five rebounds on 5-of-9 shooting, showing he was ready to be part of the Bulls' locker room. The rest is history.
Jordan and Pippen were also brilliant in that game, combining for 34 points on 15-of-22 shooting. Years later, Jordan admitted that even though Petrovic was considered the best player on that Croatian team, their full focus was on Kukoc, whom Team USA wanted to intimidate.
"All we heard in Chicago was how great Toni Kukoc was from Jerry Krause," Michael said. "And we made a pact that we were not going to let this guy do anything against us. So it was like, 'Okay, you got him in the first half, I got him in the second half.' We're going to make sure this kid doesn't upstage the Dream Team."Kukoc could have been a franchise player
Despite his genius as a GM and phenomenal vision in assembling the team, Krause never got the credit he deserved. He was far from easy to work with and had a huge ego like Jordan. That conflict was one the Bulls never fully overcame, even though they won six rings together.
As for Toni, he truly became the third option behind Michael and Scottie, which was proven by his Sixth Man of the Year award and by being the team's third-leading scorer and facilitator. His unselfish ego allowed the team to thrive. His true ability was shown during the 1998–99 season when the team was aging and breaking apart. In 44 games, he averaged 18.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists.
Croatian could have been a franchise player on any other team, but he was always focused on winning and the team, which is why he was a key piece of the Bulls' second three-peat. Just how good he was was confirmed by the fact that he passed Jordan's and Pippen's test. This story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 20, 2025, where it first appeared.

Former Boston Celtics forward explains decision to return to NBA

Guerschon Yabusele joined the Boston Celtics as the 16th overall pick in 2016. He spent two seasons with the franchise, totalling 74 regular-season games, where he averaged 6.6 minutes per outing. Yabusele had likely made the jump to the NBA too soon, as a result, found himself heading back to Europe ahead of the 2019-20 season. During Yabusele's time away from the NBA, he became a key part of Real Madrid's roster, improving every facet of his game to prove himself as one of the best players the EuroLeague had to offer. Yabusele's improvements were on full display throughout the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he shone for the French National Team. As a result, Yabusele got his second chance in the NBA, earning a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. Yabusele impressed during his return season and has now signed a two-year contract with the New York Knicks. He will likely play a key role in Mike Brown's second unit. During a recent episode of "The Roommates" podcast, Yabusele explained his decision to return to the NBA to new teammates Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. He also touched on the difference between the NBA game and the European game and his hopes for the upcoming season. You can watch the full podcast episode by clicking on the embedded video above. Knicks Urged to Sign Former All-Star in Blockbuster Free Agent Deal

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MARCH 28: Ben Simmons #25 of the Los Angeles Clippers searches for an opening during the first half of the game against the New York Knicks at Barclays Center on March 28, 2025 in New York City. More"One of the Knicks' most significant weaknesses last season was a lack of playmaking on the roster. Outside of star guard Jalen Brunson's 7.3 assists per game, the only high-assist teammate he had was Josh Hart at 5.9. Recently signed guard Jordan Clarkson is a bench scorer first and foremost, not a shot creator for others," Pincus wrote. "Simmons could relieve some of that pressure, with the size to play alongside Brunson or entirely with the second unit to help generate offense. Before acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns, the Knicks were primarily known as a grind-it-out defensive unit. That shifted to more of an offense-first squad, but the team still has plenty of strong wing defenders like Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby. Simmons adds to that group while also addressing a need on offense." More news: 76ers' 3-Player Trade Idea Sends Out Jared McCain for $36 Million Forward Simmons is a former No. 1 overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers who appeared to have the skillset to be the league's next superstar. After making three consecutive All-Star appearances from 2018-21, Simmons suffered a back injury that has drastically altered his career. Since 2022, Simmons has played for the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, averaging just 5.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game across 108 contests. While he's far from the playmaking point-forward he used to be, he could still provide critical playmaking and depth to a Knicks team with aspirations of a championship run. Thunder's 2025-26 City Edition Uniforms Connect Past And Present

The 2025-26 season is exactly two months away, as the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder look to repeat. During the upcoming campaign, the team will feature a new look on the court on select nights, as the Thunder recently unveiled its 2025-26 Nike NBA City Edition Uniform. Although it's a new design, it's a re-design of a former uniform — once again rooted in heritage as a tribute to the Native and Indigenous cultures that shape Oklahoma's identity and community spirit. These new uniforms will be debuted at Paycom Center during its annual Native American Heritage Night game on Wednesday, Nov. 19, against the Sacramento Kings. From there, each Friday home game, beginning Dec. 5, will be designated as a City Nights game, during which the team will wear its uniform and play on an incredible City Edition court. Again, these uniforms have never been worn in Oklahoma City, but they should look familiar given the inspiration of a former turquoise variation from the 2018-19 campaign. As such, fans may recognize various design elements of the new uniform, which draw inspiration from the previous. The Thunder wanted to make sure this season's version deepens the connection to Oklahoma's rich Native heritage, weaving together historical influences with modern-day pride, which reflects Oklahoma City as a city that's on the move, united by culture, and energized by the growing legacy of the Thunder. At the center of the jersey — the heart of the design — interlocking geometric shapes form the city's name, 'OKC.' This symbolizes unity and strength, while building a bold convergence of community and belonging. Inspired by the Oklahoma River that binds the north and south sides of the city, the jersey also features water-like teeth uniting the jersey's duotone halves. The waistband on the shorts is a pattern of expanding squares representing growing communities, inspired by ceremonial regalia. Furthermore, the Thunder sunset-colored sash wraps across the shoulder and shorts leg as a symbol of the identity we all share and a tribute to the resilience of Oklahoma's tribes and the state that continues to build together. Hidden in the right side-leg of the shorts is a turtle emblem, representing endurance and unity, featuring a circular shell with lines echoing community connection and the medicine wheel. The turtle's squares and arrows point toward OKC, reflecting the four sacred directions. Each corner honors the four directions of the medicine wheel, a sacred symbol of interconnectedness. Sunset-toned sashes wrap the shoulder and shorts leg, honoring tribal resilience and shared identity. Just like in the previous turquoise edition, there are 11 geometric stars on the sides of the jersey and shorts, meant to carry forward stories passed down from one generation to the next. Ahead of the uniforms being worn on-court for the first time on Nov. 19, fans can get an up close and personal look at the uniform at the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City between Aug. 21 and Sept. 5. From there, the uniform will be digitally exhibited at the museum through November's Native American Heritage Oklahoma City Thunder will kick off the season on Oct. 21 against the Houston Rockets on the NBA's opening night, meaning these new City Edition uniforms will be debuted less than a month into the season.
