Malaysia recovers RM158mil in public funds via follow-up audits
The achievement was highlighted in a statement issued today in conjunction with the inaugural meeting of the Working Group on Follow-up Audit (WGFA), a newly established body under the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (Intosai).
Malaysia is chairing the group, which aims to help countries strengthen their follow-up mechanisms to ensure audit findings lead to concrete action and resolution.
The two-day meeting, which began today in Penang, brought together 71 auditors from 43 countries, including officials from Bulgaria, Oman, South Africa, Thailand and Turkiye. The group includes heads of audit agencies and senior auditors.
Malaysia's Auditor General (AG) and Intosai WGFA chair Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi said the group's creation shows the global commitment to better accountability in public spending.
A key highlight from Malaysia was the introduction of the AG's Dashboard, a digital system that tracks every issue raised in the AG's report until it is fully resolved.
The meeting will also finalise the group's official framework and plan future projects, including a guideline that shares best practices for follow-up audits globally.
Delegates also discussed the need for more training and support to help countries improve their audit follow-up work, which is seen as a key part of public sector reform.
The event was supported by the Penang state government, along with other local agencies, to promote tourism and economic growth in the state.

Nearly 1.8 million visitors from China travelled to Malaysia between January and May this year, following the government's decision to introduce a visa waiver for Chinese nationals. Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said the policy, which took effect in 2024, had driven a sharp rise in arrivals, from 1.6 million in 2023 to 3.4 million last year. Khairul Firdaus added that the ministry, together with the travel agency association, was actively pursuing promotional campaigns targeting Chinese tourists, particularly those seeking Muslim-friendly experiences. In response to a separate question from Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (PN–Dungun) on ensuring the east coast states also benefit economically, the deputy minister said integrated promotions were being undertaken via Tourism Malaysia and the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC). These, he said, highlighted attractions such as the Crystal Mosque to audiences in ASEAN, Europe, China, Japan and South Korea. 'However, it is also closely linked to the culture of the local community and when we are able to promote these elements, it will create spillover benefits for industries such as homestays, handicrafts and traditional foods,' he said.

Ipoh Sentral: Priority For Recreational Park To Open Before Commercial Projects
IPOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The developer of the Ipoh Sentral project site has been reminded to complete the construction of a recreational park first before developing any commercial projects. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the construction of the recreational park is among the first phase in construction plans for the Ipoh Sentral project which is expected to be completed within a year. He said the condition was set by the government to ensure that local people experience the benefits of development in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI. "We want developers to prioritise the public first, which is our condition ... we have to deliver the recreational park to the local community first before they can pursue profits even though this park brings no financial gain to the developer. "What is the point of this development if the local people cannot enjoy it. For the people of Perak, especially those in Ipoh, I have set a condition for the developer, that within six to 12 months, we want to deliver the first phase of this recreational park to be open to the public. So the developer must remember this as one of the key conditions,' he said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ipoh Sentral project here today. The ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim together with Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, and was also attended by MRCB Land chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini. Loke said the project, which is located adjacent to the Ipoh train station, will be developed using the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept by integrating rail, bus, taxi and e-hailing services, and pedestrian and cycling lanes. 'This development concept is in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI and the National Transport Master Plan, and supports the direction of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) which makes TOD the key driver of urban growth. 'This approach promotes sustainable lifestyles, reduces traffic congestion, concentrates development around stations and transport hubs, and strengthens the role of public transport as one of the people's main choices,' he said.

RM20k boost for Penang Badminton Association
KUALA LUMPUR: The 100th anniversary celebration of the Penang Badminton Association was made more meaningful when CitaGlobal Berhad contributed RM20,000 to inspire the nurturing of more stars on par with legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei. Honorary Life President of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and Executive Chairman and President of CitaGlobal Berhad, Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria described Penang as still having 'unfinished business' in strengthening the national badminton ecosystem. 'That is why, as a badminton leader, I always value the leadership of Penang and throughout my seven years as president (of the Badminton Association of Malaysia), they have helped me greatly in leading the development of badminton not only in Penang but also across Malaysia. 'I think there is another so-called unfinished business. That is the setting up of a regional academy, and with this centenary celebration, it should basically be pursued.
