RM20k boost for Penang Badminton Association
Honorary Life President of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and Executive Chairman and President of CitaGlobal Berhad, Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria described Penang as still having 'unfinished business' in strengthening the national badminton ecosystem.
'That is why, as a badminton leader, I always value the leadership of Penang and throughout my seven years as president (of the Badminton Association of Malaysia), they have helped me greatly in leading the development of badminton not only in Penang but also across Malaysia.
'I think there is another so-called unfinished business. That is the setting up of a regional academy, and with this centenary celebration, it should basically be pursued. Because I think just having a centre like the Petronas Badminton Academy here, it will actually be more meaningful if we can also have a regional academy in Penang,' he told reporters after presenting the cheque at Akademi Badminton Malaysia, here today.
Meanwhile, Penang Badminton Association president Datuk Kah Kau Kiak said Chong Wei has been appointed as the 100th Anniversary Ambassador and will enliven the gala night scheduled for Nov 22.
Established in 1925, the Penang Badminton Association is the oldest state badminton association in Malaysia and continues to be a 'fertile ground' for producing champions, with Chong Wei remaining the symbol of its success. - Bernama

PETALING JAYA: It was never easy trying to lure Datuk Lee Chong Wei back into the fold of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). For years since his 2019 retirement, the nation's greatest shuttler kept a respectful distance, politely turning down repeated offers to rejoin the body, preferring instead to contribute on his own terms. But on Saturday, BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz finally achieved what no one else could. So what made him have a change of heart? It was the detailed blueprint called 'Tangkis 2030' that was unveiled by Tengku Zafrul during the council meeting on Saturday. The five-year plan covers BAM's ambitions, covering not just the elite squad but the entire badminton ecosystem. And it convinced him to return as an independent council member. 'To be honest, I was surprised at how detailed and long-term his plan is,' said Chong Wei when contacted. 'This is the first time I've seen a BAM president with such a roadmap. In less than 100 days, he's presented a clear vision, and I can see he is sincere about lifting Malaysian badminton. 'In the past, many people had asked me to come back to BAM, but I feel that the plan drawn up by Tengku Zafrul is one that covers many aspects," said Chong Wei. 'Tangkis 2030' is built around five key missions: reclaiming the Thomas Cup by 2026, winning Olympic gold at Los Angeles 2028, producing world No. 1s in at least three events, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of champions, and driving badminton as a pillar of a healthier Malaysia. A flagship programme, 'Road to Thomas Cup', targets ending Malaysia's 34-year drought in Horsens, Denmark, next year. To strengthen BAM's foundations, Zafrul has also roped in three other heavyweights: former NTV7 and Celcom CEO Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly (branding and marketing), Tan Sri Gooi Hoe Soon (finance), and Datuk Sunil Abraham (legal).

Waterski queen Aaliyah rules again
PUTRAJAYA: Waterski queen Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah swept all four women's open titles at the Malaysia Ski & Wake Championships at the Waterfront Sports Complex in Precinct 6 today. The 22-year-old, ranked World No. 7 in jump, cleared 42.6m in her favourite event, and scored 7,320 points in tricks to complete a golden sweep of the slalom, tricks, jump and overall. Her only challenger, Indonesia's Ni Ika Dewi Ambarawati, settled for silver in all three events. The 32-year-old physiotherapist from Bandung managed 493 points in slalom and a modest 13.8m in jump. Aaliyah, who will compete in the World Open in Recetto, Italy next week, pocketed RM4,000 in prize money. "It's been a fun and exciting adventure for me. I was involved in a one-on-one challenge with Ika, and everything I did here was part of my preparation for the World Championships," said Aaliyah, who recently bagged four golds and set a new Asian jump record at the Asian Championships in Bangkok. Aaliyah's victory was witnessed by Deputy Secretary-General of the Youth and Sports Ministry, Chan Hon Jin. During the prize presentation, the ministry also handed a mock cheque of RM145,000 under the Sport Matching Grant to the Malaysian Waterski and Wakeboard Federation, received by its president Phillipa Yoong. In the men's open, Aaliyah's younger brothers Aiden and Adam also impressed. Aiden, 20, clinched gold in slalom and tricks — setting a new national record of 6,830 points in tricks — while Adam picked up a silver and bronze. Indonesia's Dimas Ridho Suprihono took silver in tricks with 4,920 points, leaving Adam to settle for bronze with 4,590. The men's jump crown went to Indonesia's Zahidi Putu, who thrilled the crowd with a 39.9m leap. Aiden's best was 32.3m while Adam managed 28.6m. Malaysia's youngest star, 13-year-old Aydan Saisi, delivered a remarkable performance to secure his third straight gold in the boys' Under-14 wakeboard final. Aydan scored 20 points to finish ahead of five Indonesian challengers, including Alfarizi Nusantara (19.22 points) and Muhammad Syaiffulloh (16).

Chong Wei: It is my way of giving back to BAM and the nation
KUALA LUMPUR: Former world No 1 Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei says his decision to accept a seat on the BA of Malaysia (BAM) council is his way of giving back to the national body that shaped him into a badminton legend. The 42-year-old, who retired in 2019, told BH Sport that BAM's sacrifices throughout his career were too great to forget and that he now feels compelled to contribute in a different capacity. "BAM did so much for me during my playing days. This appointment is what I'd call my way of giving back to the nation and to BAM. "Whatever I can do to help, I will share for the benefit of the national team," said Chong Wei. His close ties with BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz also played a key role in his decision to join the governing body's leadership. "From the start, Tengku Zafrul has always engaged with me. He listens not only to players but also to coaches and the media. "A few weeks ago, he suggested that I come on board to help lift the national team's performance," Chong Wei revealed. The three-time Olympic silver medallist admitted he took time to weigh up the offer, as he already holds several positions, including member of the Road to Gold (RTG) committee, National Sports Council (NSC) board member, and Johor Sports ambassador. Chong Wei was also quick to dismiss talk that such high-profile roles come with lucrative financial rewards. "Many people think being in NSC or BAM means a big salary, but that's not true. These are voluntary roles, the same as the president's. "My aim is not personal gain, but to give back to the country and help nurture the next generation of players," he stressed. Commenting on BAM's three key targets – winning the Thomas Cup in 2026, capturing Olympic gold in Los Angeles 2028, and producing at least three world No 1 players or pairs by 2030 – Chong Wei praised the clear direction. "For me, this is a very positive move because now everyone – players, coaches and officials – are working towards the same goals. To succeed, we must function as one team," he said. Chong Wei vowed to give his best to help BAM restore Malaysian badminton to its former glory on the world stage.
