Keanu Reeves shares promising update on long-awaited Constantine sequel

Independent24-02-2025

Cult favourite Constantine might finally get the long-awaited sequel as star Keanu Reeves provided an optimistic update.
Reeves, who played John Constantine in the 2005 original, said in a new interview that after over a decade's worth of attempts to get the sequel made, the film was finally ready for a script.
'We have been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, 'Okay.' So, we're going to try and write a script,' the John Wick star told Inverse.
While Reeves had never been shy about wanting to reprise his role, it was only in September 2022 that the studio confirmed a sequel to the fantasy horror film.
Based on Hellblazer comics and directed by Francis Lawrence, Constantine starred Reeves as suicide survivor and demon hunter John Constantine, entangled in a supernatural plot between angelic and demonic forces.
The original also starred Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf and Tilda Swinton but it was unclear if any were returning for the sequel.
While details about the sequel were scant, Reeves admitted one thing: 'tortured' John Constantine's troubles were only starting.
Confirming that Constantine 2 would be set in the 'same world' as the original, Reeves added: 'We're not going off that. John Constantine's going to be tortured even more.'
Reeves had made no secret of his desire to make the sequel and even admitted in 2023 that he had to fight hard for Warner Bros to greenlight it.
'I kept asking almost every year. I was like, 'Can I please have some more?'' Reeves told Total Film. 'I kept asking almost every year. I'd be like, 'Can I please?' They'd be like, 'No, no!'
'I don't know if it was unfinished business, but it was definitely a role that I loved, and I thought that Francis Lawrence, the director, did such amazing work. I loved playing that character, and I really enjoyed the film.'
Lawrence was confirmed to direct the sequel after saying in an earlier interview that he had to be 'convinced' to sign up for the project once it was clear Reeves and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman could have 'control' over the character.
'We finally have been sort of given the permission to go ahead and do our version of Constantine because people are always saving him to be part of some shared universe thing or some TV thing or whatever,' he said at the time.
Reeves most recently appeared in a fun cameo in the second season of dystopian Apple TV+ drama severance"> Severance, where the actor voiced the cartoon version of the Lumon office building.
'All I can say is that he talked about a couple of different people for that role. We always wanted it to be somebody that people have certain associations with, but also, it had to be a very warm presence,' said series creator Dan Erickson.
'The Lumon building is very friendly in the context of this video, and there's a friendliness to that particular voice and a heart to that particular voice.'

Warner Bros Discovery shareholders reject 2024 executive pay

June 3 (Reuters) - A majority of Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O), opens new tab shareholders voted against the 2024 pay packages of CEO David Zaslav and other top executives at the media conglomerate's annual stockholder meeting, a Tuesday regulatory filing showed. The board of directors had recommended shareholders to vote in favor of the 2024 executive compensation; however, more than 59% of them rejected the proposal on a non-binding basis. For 2024, Zaslav's total compensation rose 4% from the prior year to $51.9 million. Warner Bros Discovery has been struggling to stem declines in its cable TV business amid widespread cord-cutting, focusing instead on its faster-growing streaming and studios divisions. Last month, it missed first-quarter revenue estimates and posted a larger-than-expected loss. The company is also moving towards a potential breakup, CNBC reported last month. WBD had laid the groundwork for a possible sale or spinoff of its declining cable TV assets last December by announcing a separation from its streaming and studio operations. Powered by a strong content slate, including the third season of HBO's "The White Lotus" and the medical drama series "The Pitt", WBD added 5.3 million streaming subscribers in the January-March quarter, beating market expectations, but still far off from streaming industry leader Netflix (NFLX.O), opens new tab. The company last month also walked back on the branding of its streaming service, Max, bringing back the HBO name it dropped two years ago.

The show that deserves to be bigger than Line of Duty reveals major news

The Gary Oldman-led spy drama is one of the best shows on right now (Picture: AP) One of the best shows currently on air is returning with a new season in a matter of months. After several seasons as a sleeper hit, the word of mouth truly caught on last year when Apple TV Plus brought Slow Horses back for a fourth season – and we now know when season five is coming. In a TV landscape when regular release dates are a pipe dream, the Gary Oldman-led spy drama is one of the dramas we can regularly rely on. The first two episodes of season five will premiere on September 24, kicking off a season based on Mick Herron's London Rules novel. Our group of loser spies will reconvene in Slough House: the rubbishy government building where operatives are put out to paperwork pasture after some sort of fiasco in the job. Alongside the regular cast including Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden (a soon-to-be father!) and Rosalind Eleazar, the fifth season welcomes a guest star in Ted Lasso's salt and pepper coach Nick Mohammed as a politico. Slow Horses follows a team of MI5 rejects led by Oldman's Lamb (Picture: Jack English/Apple TV+/AP) Saskia Reeves is Oldman's sparring partner in the drab Slough House purgatory (Picture: Apple TV+) The upcoming season is set to centre around Roddy (Christopher Chung) – who's sporting an interesting new man bun in the first look pictures – and his new girlfriend, who actually isn't a catfish this time. The tech whizz having some romantic success leaves everyone in Slough House asking questions – just as a series of bizarre events occur across the capitol city. As ever, its the Slow Horses who are on hand to set the world to rights. 'After all, Lamb knows that in the world of espionage, the London Rules – cover your back – always apply,' the official synopsis reads. With six episodes soon to be with us, we already know this season won't be the end of the road for Slough House. The show has already been renewed for a sixth season, which the production team are working away at even as the fifth hasn't aired yet. Jack Lowden plays ambitious young agent River Cartwright (Picture: Apple TV+) Oldman previously told he is having 'enormous fun' playing a human as objectionable as the slobby and disillusioned Jackson Lamb, with his penchant for farting, daytime drinking and savage put-downs. 'If you're playing mean and ugly and you have bad writing, then it's difficult. Offensive mean and ugly with [writer] Will Smith and Mick Herron is a lot easier,' he told and other press in a roundtable. 'It's enormous fun, I really do have to say. I think people – everyone's had that boss, or you've met those people along the way where I think secretly you would just love to be brutally honest. And I think that's what we find amusing and funny about Lamb. There's something that we maybe recognize or go, 'Oh, I wish I could talk to someone like that. There's no filter!' 'But it's fun, to answer your question, when you've got good writing.' Slow Horses season 5 debuts on September 24 on Apple TV Plus. Got a story? Slow Horses season five first look: Tech nerd Roddy Ho bags glamorous new girlfriend - but all isn't as it seems

A first look at the upcoming season of Slow Horses sees tech nerd Roddy Ho bag a glamorous new girlfriend - but all isn't as it seems. The spy thriller - based on Mick Herron's novel Slough Horse - hit our screens in 2022 and has gone on to have four successful series. Fans don't have long to wait until the fifth drops, as it is set to premiere on Wednesday 24 September 2025. But autumn is still a long wait for some, and luckily on Tuesday (June 2 2025), Apple TV+ dropped a sneak peek at what is to come. AppleTV+'s official synopsis reads: 'This quick-witted spy drama follows a dysfunctional team of MI5 agents - and their obnoxious boss, the notorious Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman). 'As they navigate the espionage world's smoke and mirrors to defend England from sinister forces.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. According to the streaming service's press release, tech nerd Roddy Ho (Christopher) people start to get suspicious of his new lover. But the Slow Horses have to later come together to figure out what is going on after a series of 'bizarre events'. The star-studded cast includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, James Callis, Tom Brooke, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Ruth Bradley, and Jonathan Pryce. Nick Mohammad will also appear as a special guest star. The first two episodes will drop on Wednesday 24 September 2025. Then fans will have to wait each week for their Slow Horses fix. The first series of Slow Horses premiered in April 2022, which was later followed by a second the same year. In 2023, the third series hit the streaming service, and the latest was released in 2024. In January 2024, Slow Horses was renewed for a fifth season after fans praised the 'brilliant' season three finale. And in October last year it was announced that the hit series will return for a sixth. Apple TV revealed a six-episode sixth season is in the works, and will see the Slow Horses on the run as Diana Taverner embroils them all in a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge. Jay Hunt, creative director, Europe, Apple TV+, said: 'Audiences around the world have fallen in love with the Slow Horses, and I'm delighted that Gary Oldman will be leading this star-studded cast on another acerbic and action-packed adventure.' The show has a very impressive 98% on the Tomatometer of review site Rotten Tomatoes, as well as 88% on the Popcornmeter. Many have also rushed to IMDB to give their thoughts on the show. One said: 'Gary Oldman is brilliant, just brilliant. I've watched two episodes and I'm hooked. I love the story, the sets and setting, the acting is superb throughout. I will be watching the entire series more than once. It's the sort of Drama the UK was once famous for. A massive thumbs up to all involved.' 'This has gotten better week after week. This review is after the third episode, and this is where I feel the pace picks up, and the early character establishment starts to pay off.' 'I give it a 10 for Gary Oldham alone. He is so freaking brilliant if you don't watch the show just for that alone you're missing out. This guy is the definition of what every good actor should be.' 'This is sooooo good. Everything about this show is exceptionally good.' 'Excellent- vibrant funny & authentic- it is the humour and fantastic scripts that beguile. Brilliant acting and fast paced story lines compelling- intrigue and naturalistic performances engage and it's the most interesting and entertaining view of spy world I have ever seen.' 'Genuinely one of the best tings I've seen in so so long.' Watch Slow Horses on Apple TV now.
