As Israeli strikes inside Iran have raised tensions in West Asia, gold prices have surged in India to cross the Rs 1 lakh-mark.
Investors have often sought gold as a safe haven asset in times of uncertainty. Gold prices had surpassed the Rs 1 lakh-mark in April as well when US President Donald Trump's topsy turvy trade policy had sown uncertainty.
Gold's August contracts hit the fresh lifetime high of Rs 1,00,403 per 10 grams whereas the contracts with October expiry hit the all-time high of Rs 1,01,295 per 10 grams on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), according to Moneycontrol.

The prices for gold in the market surged as well, with the price of 24 carat gold jumping by Rs 2,120 in one session to reach Rs 1,01,400.
Gold has long been seen as a safe haven asset that people have preferred to put their money in during economic and market volatility. Owing to its intrinsic value and universal appeal, gold has often served as a hedge against inflation and shaky markets.
In India, returns on gold have been comparable with stocks on Sensex, with gold delivering an annualised return of about 13.8 per cent against Sensex's 14.1 per cent returns.
Israel struck Iranian nuclear and military sites in the early hours of Friday. It also targeted several senior Iranian officials, including military chiefs and scientists.

Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu seeks funds for tobacco farmers

Vijayawada: Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has requested Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal to allocate ₹150 crore from the tobacco board to the state govt to manage the ongoing burley tobacco purchases. He said that the state govt is purchasing about 20 million kg of burley tobacco by spending nearly ₹300 crore as traders did not pick up the stocks leaving the growers into deep trouble. Union minister Goyal visited chief minister Chandrababu Naidu's residence in Undavalli on Sunday and held discussions on various issues. The chief minister explained that the state govt set up tobacco purchase centres at seven locations in Bapatla, Guntur, Palnadu, and Prakasam districts to avoid further delay causing distress among the farming community. "The state govt deployed state marketing agency-markfed to purchase burley tobacco from growers and it was expected to cost around Rs 300 crore. The state's burden would greatly come down if the Centre grants at least Rs 150 crore from the surplus revenues of the tobacco board," said Naidu. He had also requested the Union minister to bring burley tobacco production and marketing under the purview of the tobacco board with the amendment of tobacco board Act. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo He said that tobacco board is only regulating FCV tobacco while the burley growers are being misled by the private players resulting in crisis when there are no buyers. He observed that bringing the cultivation of white and black burley tobacco too under the tobacco board jurisdiction would be help regulate the crop properly. Chief minister urged Goyal to reconsider reducing the import duty on oil palm to 10%. He explained that reducing import duty is causing palm oil farmers in the state to receive unfair prices and suffer significant losses. Chief minister highlighted that the decision to reduce import duty could hinder the goals of the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO) set by the centre. He suggested the union minister to hold discussions with the US regarding the duties imposed on aqua exports. "The 27% duty imposed by the US on seafood is impacting eight lakh aqua farmers in Andhra Pradesh. The Centre should exert pressure on USA to reduce the burden to relieve aqua farmers," said Naidu. He had also urged Goyal to reduce GST on mango pulp from 12% to 5%. He said that the state govt had already brought the issue to the attention of the Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Couple found dead at house, kin alleges threat from bank

Thiruvananthapuram: A couple, who were reportedly facing a severe financial crisis, were found dead at their house in Karamana, allegedly after receiving a call from a nationalised bank informing them that their house would be attached on Monday as part of revenue recovery. Police identified the deceased as Satheeshan, 55, of Keshava Bhavan near Kochu Kattanvila at Thamalam and Bindu V, 49. Bindu's body was found hanging in the bedroom and Satheeshan's body was lying on the floor. "Only after a postmortem can we confirm whether it was suicide or whether there was any foul play. The cause of Satheeshan's death has also not been confirmed. There was some bleeding from his body," said police. The relatives of the deceased alleged that the bank cheated the deceased by charging an enormous amount as interest on the loan taken. According to relatives, Satheeshan took a loan of Rs 60 lakh about seven years ago. He suffered a stroke in 2021. Following this, he could not repay the loan amount. "Two years ago, the bank offered him some money as a top-up of the existing loan. However, he received no money, and the bank asked him to pay Rs 1.10 crore to avoid revenue recovery. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is USDJPY on the Upward Move? IC Markets Sign Up Undo In April, the bank staff members had reached the house to seal the property, but due to the resistance by local people, they did not proceed with it. The bank later directed him to pay back Rs 2 crore. Following that, he filed a case against the bank demanding a reassessment of the way the repayment amount was calculated and also for threatening him on the phone continuously," said Binu T, brother of Bindu. Binu also said the family was planning to sell the house to repay the loan, but by projecting a huge amount, the bank ruined their plans to clear the dues. Locals recently protested in front of the bank demanding justice by waiving off some part of the interest. But the bank was not willing to do so, alleged Binu.
