Watch: Golf tournament cancels opening day due to bear on the course
The bear was spotted near the first tee at the Sendai Classic Golf Club on Wednesday, causing the pro-am competition scheduled for that day to be canceled.
The Meiji Yasuda Ladies tournament, a JLPGA Tour event, had been scheduled to begin on Thursday but was canceled a result of the bear's presence. The tournament had originally been scheduled to last for four days.
"On Wednesday, a bear sighting on the course was reported and the pro-am tournament was canceled to protect the safety of the participants, players and staff," organizers wrote on the tournament website. "To ensure safety and to consider future measures, we have decided to cancel Thursday's opening day. We will announce details of the tournament from Friday onward as soon as they have been decided."
Organizers later decided the Meiji Yasuda Ladies tournament would go ahead as planned Friday, but without spectators.
The incident follows a bear sighting at the Golf Club Twin Fields in Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture, in May that led to the final round of the Twinfield Ladies on the women's second-tier Step Up tour being canceled.

Cox/UPI | License Photo Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Billy Howton, former Green Bay Packers star and founder and first president of the NFL Players Association, has died. He was 95. Howton, born in Littlefield, Texas, in 1930, is regarded as one of the most productive wide receivers of the pre-Super Bowl era. He was believed to be the oldest living NFL player. Howton died in Houston on Monday, according to an obituary. The funeral home confirmed his death Friday. Howton played for Green Bay from 1952 to 1958. He was two-time All-Pro and caught 303 passes for 5,581 yards and 43 touchdowns. He still has the franchise record for single-game receiving yards in a game in 1956 against the Los Angeles Rams. He was the first rookie to pick up more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season. He was traded to the Browns before Vince Lombardi's first season with the Packers. He ended his career playing for the Cowboys from 1960 to 1963. His career finished with 503 catches for 8,459 receiving yards. At the time of his retirement, both of those statistics ranked first in NFL history. He was inducted into the Packer Hall of Fame in 1974. He helped found the NFLPA in the 1950s and was its president from 1958 to 1962.

Watch: 82,000 rubber ducks race down the Chicago River
Aug. 8 (UPI) -- More than 82,000 rubber ducks went floating down the Chicago River for the 2025 Chicago Ducky Derby, an annual fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois. The event called on spectators and fans to adopt a duck for a $10 donation, and the ducks were then dumped into the river for a floating race to win their adopters prizes including a Chevy Trailblazer, $2,500 cash and W Club Chicago Cubs tickets. Organizers said more than 82,000 rubber ducks participated in this year's derby, which raised nearly $600,000 for Special Olympics Illinois. "Each donation supports Special Olympics Illinois programming which creates opportunities for growth, personal development, and connection through, sports, health, and leadership programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities," Pete Beale-DelVecchio, president and CEO of Special Olympics Illinois, said in a statement. The event also included live music, food trucks, photo opportunities and games. The ducks were removed from the river after the race and will be stored for use in next year's event.

Spain knocks U.S. women out of top spot in world soccer rankings

Photo by Til Buergy/EPA Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Spain replaced the United States atop the FIFA women's soccer world rankings, which were released Thursday, despite a loss to England in the Euro 2025 finale. Spain, the most recent (2023) World Cup champions, posted a 6-1 record since the last edition of the women's world rankings. The Spaniards' lone loss was a penalty kick setback to England in the Euro finale July 27 in Basel, Switzerland. The Americans, the most-recent (2024) Olympic gold medalists, are 3-0 since the last edition of the rankings. The next version of the rankings will be released Dec. 10. Sweden moved up three spots to No. 3 in the world. No. 4 England and No. 5 German round out the Top 5. No. 6 France moved up four spots. No. 7 Brazil, No. 8 Japan, No. 9 Canada and No. 10 Korea round out the Top 10. No. 104 Bangladesh made the biggest leap up the rankings, climbing 24 spots. Mongolia took the biggest fall, moving down 22 spots to No. 148. The United States Women's National Team will battle Portugal in two friendlies in October. The first match will be Oct. 23 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa. The Americans will face Portal on Oct. 26 at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. "Portugal is a growing team that will be highly motivated for these matches, but as always, these three games are more opportunities to work on us," U.S. manager Emma Hayes said in a news release. "I'm very impressed with the progress we've made since the Olympics and I want to give a lot of credit to the players for embracing our culture and ideas, but our staff and the players know we still have much work to do before World Cup qualifying next year." Spain will face Sweden on Oct. 24 and 28 in the UEFA Women's Nations League.
