Brock Purdy: My whole story has been just being overlooked, not good enough
Brock Purdy was not supposed to play his rookie season. As the final pick in the 2022 draft, he was buried deep on the 49ers' depth chart.
Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in 2021, and Jimmy Garoppolo, who the 49ers had acquired for a 2018 second-round pick, began the season ahead of Purdy. Lance, though, fractured his ankle in Week 2.
That's when Purdy was confident his opportunity would come sooner than later.
'I'm not going to lie. During camp and stuff, all the competitions and stuff were going on, and Trey was the guy, but like with Nate Sudfeld and I are competing,' Purdy said on the Built 4 More podcast. 'I knew that I could like rip the ball, and going up against like some dudes I watched growing up on the practice field and then in preseason games. So, that sort of gave me some confidence, like, 'OK, I can do this thing. I don't know how it's going to go down, because there's guys in front of me with Trey Lance and then later Jimmy Garoppolo.
'Once Jimmy became the starter, I was like, 'I might get some playing time this year, man. I just don't know when.''
Garoppolo fractured his foot in Week 13 and Purdy led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. It's been Purdy's job since.
'My whole story has been just being overlooked, not good enough,' Purdy said on the podcast, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. 'And for me, deep down inside, I'm like, 'I know I can play and compete at this level, this level, this level.' And so, high school, it was the case. And then I became a starter, and we went to the state championship, all that. But I got recruited very late.
'And then all of a sudden, I barely get an offer at the end, and I go to Iowa State. And then I was the third-string guy going into that. Overlooked. And then I became the starter halfway through that season, and then for four more years. And then I got drafted last. So, all these people tell me that you're not going to be good enough, but deep down inside, this whole time, I'm like, 'Just wait until I get an opportunity to compete.'
Purdy did not discuss his contract situation on the podcast. He is eligible for a contract extension.

"You talk about a Cinderella story, I think this is the epitome of that—a guy going from making a few hundred thousand a year to making $50 million a year, it's astronomical. "It couldn't have happened to a better guy," he added. "He is the guy for this team. He is the guy for this franchise. This is just the tip of the iceberg. He's going to get another contract. He's going to win a lot of football games. He's that good of a player. So, super, super happy to see that happen for him. I love him like a brother." Superstar running back Christian McCaffrey was active for just four games in the middle of the 2024 season after dealing with Achilles and knee troubles. Advertisement His injury history isn't something to blow over year after year, but there is increasing optimism that "CMC" can return to an MVP-caliber level in 2025. As the San Francisco 49ers prepare to conclude mandatory minicamps, McCaffrey spoke to the media about his detailed offseason plan and how it's gotten him in such good of shape to have this optimism for a big year. "I think this offseason I spent a lot of time kind of building back a base, starting from scratch," McCaffrey said. "So, a lot of it was rehab, and I wanted to put myself in a position where I didn't miss a day of OTAs and I could practice, play football again, be healthy and not miss a day. And I did that, and now we can kind of kick back up the training again. But I feel great." Advertisement McCaffrey, 29, has played less than 10 games in half of the seasons he's been in the league. He has had his fair share of rehab programs and detailed what he's learned most about how to recover. "I've had a lot of people tell me as you get older you need to do less. I think there's a middle ground with that statement," McCaffrey said. "For me, it's kind of a constant evaluation of where your body's at and what you need. "You put a lot of trust in other people -- your trainer, your treatment people, people at the facility. If you follow their plans and you like where it's going and you start to feel good, you're constantly evaluating where you're at and trusting the whole offseason process." McCaffrey has been one of the hardest working players during 49ers offseason activities, and that work ethic is being noticed by the leaders of the team. Advertisement Head coach Kyle Shanahan noted how McCaffrey's diligent rehab will be the determining factor in him returning to the All-Pro level he showed during his last full season in 2023. 'If I said it, I'd be making up because Christian is — I mean, he is a psycho in a good way and so like he does everything imaginable every single day,' Shanahan told reporters, via the team transcript. "Last year he couldn't because he was battling injury all last year. And this year he is healthy, so he is right back to being who he is always been and it's really fun to watch.' McCaffrey earned Offensive Player of the Year honors two seasons ago in powering the 49ers to the Super Bowl. Last year on the sidelines, the team was not nearly as successful.
