OpenAI eyes world's largest valuation for private company in stock sale talks
OpenAI has seen exponential growth over the past year. Investors, including Microsoft and SoftBank, have poured at least $40bn into the startup, giving it a valuation of $300bn as of March. Last October, it was valued at $157bn.
If OpenAI achieves a $500bn valuation, it would surpass Elon Musk's SpaceX, which currently holds the title of world's most valuable privately held company, at $350bn.
The reported cohort of investors now eyeing OpenAI's share sale include three firms that have already invested: SoftBank, Dragoneer Investment Group and Thrive Capital. According to Bloomberg, the talks are in early stages and the numbers could change. OpenAI declined to comment.
OpenAI leads a crowded and competitive race, with the world's most powerful companies battling to beat out one another on AI. Meta, Google, Amazon and Microsoft have all been spending enormous sums on AI development – hiring engineers and building data centers. The four companies have spent a combined $155bn on AI development in 2025 alone.
Although artificial intelligence has improved since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, OpenAI received a lukewarm reception at the debut of its latest version of the AI that underpins its chatbot, GPT-5, earlier this month. Users said the new AI model's writing was worse and that it lacked the personality of previous iterations.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said his company is pursuing 'artificial general intelligence', or an AI that can outdo a human at most tasks, but at the recent launch, he said GPT-5 was 'generally intelligent', but was not yet able to 'continuously learn'.

Elon Musk 's X has reached a tentative settlement with former employees of the company then known as Twitter who'd sued for $500 million in severance pay. The parties disclosed the deal in a Wednesday court filing asking for a scheduled Sept. 17 hearing in the case to be postponed. The San Francisco federal appeals court on Thursday agreed to postpone the hearing so that both sides could finalize the settlement agreement. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. The proposed class action lawsuit by former Twitter employees Courtney McMillan and Ronald Cooper, who said the company failed to pay them and other fired workers severance they were owed. Musk took over the social media platform in 2022 and let thousands of employees go, eliminating entire teams dedicated to trust and safety, human rights and making the site accessible to people with disabilities. Other lawsuits, including one filed by Twitter executives including former CEO Parag Agrawal, are still pending. The billionaire's approach to gutting Twitter's workforce served as a template for his months-long leadership of President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, as it cut tens of thousands of federal workers earlier this year. An email announcing a 'deferred resignation offer' to federal workers, promising pay through September without having to work, was titled 'Fork in the Road,' echoing a similar email Musk sent to the Twitter workforce in 2022. Musk's drawn-out legal battles with more than 2,000 former Twitter workers were also a precursor to the court battles the Trump administration is now fighting over federal downsizing, though the circumstances are different.

US immediately pausing issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers, Rubio says
WASHINGTON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday that the United States was immediately pausing the issuance of all worker visas for commercial truck drivers. "The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers," Rubio said in a post on X.
