FM Sitharaman takes stock of steps for cybersecurity at banks amid rising border tensions
Senior officials from the Department of Financial Services of the Ministry of Finance, the CERT-In, the RBI, the IRDAI, and the NPCI attended the meeting, which focused on reviewing the banking sector's operational and cybersecurity preparedness, including digital public-facing applications such as internet banking and UPI.
The Managing Directors and CEOs of all the banks and insurance companies apprised the Finance Minister about the measures they are undertaking, given the ongoing tensions at the border.
Bank MDs & CEOs informed that cybersecurity measures have been reinforced throughout the banking system. Anti-DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) systems have been implemented by banks to protect against massive cyber-attacks. To guarantee institutional readiness, mock drills have been held encompassing cybersecurity and disaster recovery scenarios at the highest levels. They apprised that phishing attempts are being actively watched, and staff members have received several internal alerts to increase awareness.
Bank officials stated that their Security Operations Centre (SOC) and Network Operations Centres are fully operational and on high alert. These centres are coordinating closely with CERT-In and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), facilitating real-time data sharing and threat monitoring.
During the meeting, the Finance Minister stressed the critical role of the banking and financial sector in ensuring economic stability during heightened geopolitical tensions and challenging times.
She directed all banks to remain fully alert and prepared to deal with any eventuality or crisis, ensuring uninterrupted access to banking & financial services for citizens and businesses across the country, especially in border areas.
She remarked that banking services, both physical and digital, must function without disruption and glitches. Emergency protocols should be updated and tested to handle any arising contingencies, she added..
The Finance Minister expressed deep concern about the safety of bank employees and their families working at branches around the border areas. She directed banks to ensure their adequate safety by effectively coordinating with the security agencies.
She asked banks to ensure that citizens and businesses do not suffer under any circumstances, and priority must be given to seamless cash availability at ATMs, uninterrupted UPI and internet banking services, and continued access to essential banking facilities.
The Finance Minister directed banks to conduct regular audits of their cybersecurity systems and data centres and ensure that all digital and core banking infrastructure is fully firewalled and monitored round the clock to prevent breaches or any hostile cyber activity.
She instructed banks to designate two dedicated senior officials identified at the headquarters, one for reporting all cyber-related matters and the other to ensure operational matters, including the functioning of bank branches and the availability of cash in ATMs. Both dedicated officers should report any incident to CERT-In/relevant agencies and DFS on a real-time basis.
In this regard, banks were also asked to coordinate in real time with the RBI, CERT-In and relevant government agencies to ensure robust and agile information exchange and response, according to an official statement.
Besides, the Finance Minister directed insurance companies to ensure timely claim settlements and uninterrupted customer service.
The Finance Minister mentioned that the sponsor banks should ensure that regional rural banks (RRBs) are well-supported during these times and hand-hold them for any issues that they are facing.
Sitharaman reiterated that the government is firmly committed to national security and economic stability, noting that the country's banking and financial system remains robust and resilient.

Synopsis Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took a subtle dig at US President Donald Trump over recent tariffs on Indian goods, accusing global powers of jealousy and trying to disrupt India's rapid economic growth. Speaking at a bhoomi pujan ceremony for a new rail coach factory in Madhya Pradesh, Singh praised India's dynamic economy and highlighted its rise to a top-four global economy since 2014. He also emphasised India's growing defence exports and condemned terrorism, affirming India's strong stance against those who threaten the nation. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took a subtle dig at US President Donald Trump on Sunday over the recent tariff increases on Indian goods. Without naming Trump, Singh said, "Some 'boss' is jealous, unable to accept India's growth; trying to disrupt the country's economy."He added, "There are some people who are not happy with the speed at which India is developing. They are not liking it. 'Sabke boss toh hum hain' (We are everyone's boss), how is India growing so fast?"These remarks came after the US imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods and an additional 25% penalty due to India's continued purchase of Russian oil. President Trump also threatened more tariff hikes, called India's economy 'dead,' and New Delhi criticised the US after some aides accused India of supporting Russia's war in Singh described India's economy as the world's most 'dashing and dynamic.' He said that some people with the attitude of 'we are everyone's boss' are unhappy with India's rapid growth. Speaking after a bhoomi pujan (groundbreaking ceremony) of a rail coach manufacturing unit of Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh, Singh said, 'Today, if any country has a dashing and dynamic economy, it is India's economy.' He said no global power can stop India from becoming a big power due to the speed at which the country is moving pointed out that some people want to make Indian products more expensive when they reach other countries. This would stop people worldwide from buying Indian goods. He said, 'They think that we are everyone's boss and how is India moving forward so fast?'He mentioned that in 2014, India was ranked 11th in terms of economy size, but today it is counted among the top four.'If any country has a rapidly growing economy, it is our India,' he said. 'It means that the country is moving forward and its people are also moving ahead, because if the countrymen do not move forward, India cannot move forward.'Singh also spoke about defence production. Earlier, India bought defence equipment from other countries. But now, many things are made in India by Indian hands. India not only fulfils its own needs but also exports defence products to other said, 'When Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, only Rs 600 crore worth of defence products were exported. Now, we are exporting defence products worth more than Rs 24,000 crore. This is the power of India. This is the new defence sector of the new India.'Singh also referred to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in April, where 26 people were killed. He said India responded strongly with Operation Sindoor. He said terrorists killed people after asking their religion, but India does not believe in such killings.'We do not even kill ants,' he said. 'We have resolved that we will kill people (terrorists) not by their religion but by their deeds.'He added, 'India will not spare anyone who instigates us.'On the rail coach unit, Singh said it would be a big gift for Raisen and Vidisha regions in Madhya Pradesh and provide jobs for 5,000 said Madhya Pradesh is rapidly developing in industries, having recently received investment proposals of more than Rs 30 lakh crore.'If the leadership is excellent, development happens rapidly. India's past resilience shows the way forward
Peeking into a common citizen's life opens portals to understand a nation's resilience and resolve. So, let's get a glimpse into the life of a common citizen for a better appreciation of India. We'll face challenges in our journey ahead. All we need to do is take a vow to deal with at least one social vice on Independence Day (Bloomberg) The year was 1966. One August afternoon in the city of Mirzapur, the family of a government officer was about to eat lunch when his four-and-a-half-year-old daughter started crying. His six-year-old son followed suit. The red coloured chapatis were the culprit. Their tender age did not stop them from revolting against the foul smell and taste. The wheat we received from the US was meant for poultry feed in that country. Even that was available only to a lucky few. The tribals in Mirzapur survived on scant forest produce. Large parts of India were suffering from a drought that had turned farmland into dust bowls. Records suggest India produced only 72.3 million tonnes of grain in 1965-66. This was the reason Indira Gandhi sought food aid from US president Lyndon B Johnson soon after she became the Prime Minister (PM). In comparison, India is projected to produce 353.95 million tonnes of grain in 2024-25. India's sensational journey from holding a begging bowl to agricultural self-reliance is inspiring and compelling. Indira's predecessor, PM Lal Bahadur Shastri, who led the country during the second Indo-Pak war, coined the slogan 'jai jawan, jai kisan'. However, one of his less discussed clarion calls can inspire even the present generation. He asked people to skip one meal every week as India was facing a grain shortage. My idealistic parents immediately made it their routine and told us children not to waste food, as many didn't have even a few morsels to survive. The practice became our family tradition. Thousands of families still follow the ritual, proving that leaders do have the power to change society. Let's move to 1988. At the Varanasi Railway locomotive factory hospital, a girl was born while PM Rajiv Gandhi was addressing the country from the Red Fort. Her father, a young editor, was serving in another city and received one of the most important pieces of news of his life — only hours later, as all phone lines were either busy or out of order throughout the day. Remembering those days at a time when information travels within seconds to any part of the world is like exploring a pre-historic cave in amazement. Mobile phones and the internet were non-existent then. A fortunate few had landlines. They needed to book a trunk call and wait for hours to get through to another city. Getting a phone connection meant years of waiting or seeking the 'blessings' of a Member of Parliament or the Union communications minister. Today, the same country boasts the second-highest number of mobile phone users in the world after China. Its 50-crore UPI user base is dazzling the world. From tech-savvy professionals in metro cities to the tribals in the jungles of Abhujhmad, the miraculous impact of this technology of transaction is transformative. Recap from 1978 to date. There was a time from the late 1970s through the 1980s when everyone felt the country would be torn asunder. The Kashmir insurgency was a decade away, but Punjab was on the boil. According to a research paper, the Pakistan-backed reign of terror claimed 11,694 lives between 1980 and 2000. A total of 1,784 personnel from Punjab Police and other central police forces either laid down their lives in the line of duty or were grievously injured. In 1982, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his violent gang took control of the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple). Two years later, Operation Bluestar was initiated to flush them out of the premises. It led to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her trusted Sikh bodyguards. Our heads hang in shame when we remember the atrocities meted out to the Sikh community in the aftermath of the Indira assassination. In those fateful months, we felt that the mindless hatred towards Sikhs would snatch this courageous community from our fold. But society closed ranks and showed again that Indians have an amazing ability to course correct voluntarily. In those days, many states in the Northeast were suffering from insurgency. It seemed the country would break apart. Editorial pages would mull over such possibilities on special occasions such as August 15 or January 26. Today, those concerns are part of a fading past. Except for the neighbour-sponsored violence in Kashmir, the scourge of terrorism has been wiped out from the rest of the states. The Maoist insurgency, a clear threat a decade ago, is on it last legs. Our national unity has been painstakingly forged over millennia though we became a political entity merely 78 years ago. On August 15, 1947, we gained Independence from the British and, today, we have surpassed their economy. We will become the third-largest economy in the world in a few years. That's the reason I laugh at people who talk of India breaking apart. Even Donald Trump's threats evoke memories of trials and transformation triggered by Johnson's red wheat.
