Ashton kicks off new term with success across hockey, soccer and MTB
Ashton International College Ballito has hit the new term running after another successful week of sport.
The college made a triumphant return to the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls' Hockey Challenge Grand Finals, held this past weekend at St Mary's DSG in Kloof.
The girls' 1st hockey team wrapped up a strong outdoor season by finishing third in the prestigious provincial festival.
This year's result surpasses Ashton's previous Grand Finals finishes of seventh in 2015 and 2016, and ninth in 2013. The school also made history as the highest-placed team from the Durban North Region since the competition began in 2011.
Head of Girls' Sport at Ashton and first team coach, Erdine Coetzee, believes that exposing the girls to top-tier competitions like the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament, where they won the Shield Trophy in Cape Town, has paid off.
'It is a fantastic result that reflects their hard work, determination and growth,' she said. 'I am so proud of how far they have come, both individually and as a team.'
Proud captain Morgan Els noted how tough the elite schools' tournament was: 'It pushed us and reminded us why we play this game. Every moment, from the bruises to the breakthroughs, showed us how far we have come.'

Soccer
It's been a great start to soccer season for the North Coast school. Ashton's boys' teams swept Curro Hillcrest, while the girls winning two and drawing one of their four matches against the same Highways opposition.
Both girls' and boys' 1st and U16A teams won. The only sides not to win were the girls' U14A and U15A teams.
Mountain Bike Racing
The first event of the Cycle Lab Schools MTB Series at Waterfall College in Hillcrest on Sunday (July 27), saw Ashton's relay team place third, with Joshua Paul and Sophia Lombaard taking first place in their categories.
The mountain bike series maintains its position as the premier inter-schools MTB league in KZN, following an XCO short track format, with five races set out for the 2025 season.
The series is open to all public and private high schools from U13 to U19 age categories, with the full support and sanctioning by the Schools Cycling SA.
Leah Mitchell finished fifth, while Troy Cole ended 11th.
The next Cycle Lab event is on August 10 in Pietermaritzburg.

IN PHOTOS: Bergvlam and Curro Nelspruit clinch Mpumalanga titles
Curro Nelspruit's first rugby team and Hoërskool Bergvlam's U14 and second teams recently made the Lowveld proud when they won their division of the Mpumalanga Noordvaal Schools Championship. Division 3 of this championship is perhaps better known as the medium schools division. Other schools in the Lowveld that compete in Division 3 are Lowveld High School (LHS) and Hoërskool Barberton, with the latter represented in the finals by their U14 team, while LHS's teams were knocked out in the semifinals. The Division 3 finals are hosted each year by either of the two schools who have representative teams in the first team final. Seeing as last year's Division 3 finals were played in the Highveld, this year's finals were scheduled to be held in the Lowveld, and with Curro as the Lowveld representative in the first team final, they had hosting rights. Curro's first team was their only side in a final, while Bergvlam had teams in the U14, U16 and second team finals. What unfolded at Curro Nelspruit on Saturday was an incredible day of hotly contested and tight school rugby. The participating schools showcased exactly why they are the province's best Division 3 teams. The U14 final was the first order of the day, and Bergvlam managed to fend off their Lowveld rivals, Hoërskool Barberton, winning the game 24-19. The second team final was next for the Vlammies, and boy, was it tight – but the boys in red and blue emerged 29-28 victors over Hoërskool Standerton. Unfortunately, they couldn't make it three from three in the U16 final as Standerton beat Bergvlam's U16s 20-17. Curro Nelspruit's time to shine came at the end of the day, also against Standerton. These two first teams could hardly be separated throughout the final, trading blow after blow in pursuit of glory. It was, however, Curro who narrowly emerged victorious with a hard-fought 21-20 win, making this the second time Curro Nelspruit's first team has won the league. The top three teams in the U14, U15 and U16 age groups, as well as the first team league, will now head off to the regional play-offs of the Noordvaal Schools Championship. Bergvlam's U14s take on Hoërskool Fochville, while their U15s and first team face Hoërskool Riebeeckrand and the U16s face Hoërskool Elspark. Curro Nelspruit's first team will play against Hoërskool Linden and Barberton's U14s will face Vereeniging Gimnasium. All of the matches will be played this Saturday.

SA sprinter Bayanda Walaza sets sights on World Champs after student Games success
On the back of his three medals at the University Games in Germany, South African sprinting star Bayanda Walaza is eyeing more medals at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. One starred for South Africa in the swimming pool, the other starred for his country on the track. Both swimming sensation Pieter Coetzé and teenage sprinter Bayanda Walaza were instrumental in ensuring Team SA walked away with 19 medals at the recent World University Games in Germany. Coetzé — who has already turned his University Games form into 100m backstroke gold at the ongoing World Aquatics Championships in Singapore — walked away with two golds and a silver medal at the tournament. Walaza earned the same number of medals at the student Games. Walaza, who is an Olympic silver medallist, claimed double sprint gold in Germany. The former Curro Hazeldean student recorded times of 10.13 seconds (100m) and 20.63 seconds (200m) on the way to emulating the incredible feat he managed at the junior World Championships in Peru a year ago. He then ended his time in Germany with a 100m relay silver medal — which would have earned him a third gold were it not for a mishap in the passing of the baton in a tight race. Continued growth Slowly, but surely, Walaza is carving out a legacy for himself and he will be hoping that his recent achievements in Germany can add a bit of mystique to his name. September's World Athletics Championships in Tokyo present the teenager with another opportunity to do this. '[My goal] is showing up on the world stage and showing people that South Africa can produce other sprinters [in addition to Akani Simbine],' Walaza told after his success in Germany. 'I want to showcase my talent to the world and make sure that I am being recognised by the end of this year. So, I'll say my goal is to make sure that I get into the finals and get a medal,' he said of his ambitions for the upcoming championships. 'The future is Los Angeles 2028, that's the main goal. Beyond that, my goal is to be the best sprinter for the next decade,' Walaza said. These are massive goals for someone who could not have imagined the situation he finds himself in as recently as 2023. Humble beginnings Walaza was moulded by Hoërskool Vorentoe in Johannesburg, which he attended until Grade 11. Then for his matric year he earned a scholarship to Curro, courtesy of the Ruta Sechaba Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Cape Town. 'I was in a place where I knew I had big dreams, but I didn't quite know how to reach them,' Walaza said on life before Curro. 'Emotionally, I was hopeful, but also anxious. Academically, I tried hard, but it was tough without access to the right resources. 'It hit me that no matter how hard I worked, without support I might not make it,' the 19-year-old said. 'Mentally, I was determined, but sometimes it felt like the odds were stacked against me.' Then the ball began rolling for Walaza as he was exposed to a larger audience, more resources, and he met his beloved coach Thabo Matebedi. A change of fortunes Since then, it's been international medals at every turn for Walaza, who remains a raw talent despite his achievements to date. 'The scholarship gave me confidence. It showed me that people believed in my potential, even when I didn't fully believe in it myself. It opened the door to a better future. I went from surviving to dreaming big,' Walaza stated. 'I started to believe that I could compete internationally — not just in sport, but in life. It also made me realise that success is not just for certain people, it's for anyone who is given a chance,' the junior world champion added. Walaza can run, even with his unorthodox 'galloping' style. He might have been a bit slow at the University Games, but in 2025 he has run personal bests in both the 100m and 200m. In May he crossed the finish line in 9.94 seconds for the shorter sprinter distance, while his personal best in the 200m is 20.08 seconds. As his determination and hunger for success continue to fuel him, he will probably shave off some time from these personal bests in the years to come. Or even as early as the World Championships in September 2025. DM
