
Telstra forces ALL of its staff to use AI in eerie new mandate
'Flexible working is absolutely a core part of how we operate,' chief executive Vicki Brady said on Thursday, describing the company's push to embed AI into all roles as part of a broader strategy to 'radically innovate' its operations.
For employees, that means finding ways AI can boost productivity, regardless of whether they work from home or in the office.
Ms Brady has been a vocal supporter of hybrid work, breaking ranks with other business leaders calling for a full return to the office.
'We've got to really radically innovate in the core of our business. And hybrid working, I would say, for me, it's one of those things,' she said.
'That looks different for different teams across our business, but absolutely some time together, face-to-face, is part of that in bringing the best out of teams.'
Like Commonwealth Bank boss Matt Comyn, Ms Brady is an active user of AI and expects her staff to follow suit.
Telstra has become Microsoft's largest Australian customer for its Copilot AI assistant, securing 21,000 licences, and has launched a data and AI academy to train employees.
'That's a big investment, but that's an investment in our teams to really gain that experience in how to apply AI in every job across our business. And when I say every job, I mean every job,' she said.
'That's the expectation that all of us need to be adopting AI in how we operate.'
She said practical use was key to unlocking AI's benefits.
'One of our early lessons here was you can learn the theory of it, but you've got to have that practical, hands-on ability to try it, to use it, to figure out how it can deliver benefits for you,' she said.
Ms Brady pointed to one team that used Copilot to transform a lengthy market analyst report into a 30-minute podcast, making the information far easier to digest.
'Some of those tips and tricks are definitely the things that we're finding is working. And we're absolutely finding our teams really curious and eager to learn.'
Her comments came as Telstra posted its slowest mobile growth in four years following the shutdown of its 3G network.
Annual net profit surged 31 per cent to $2.34bn, driven largely by aggressive cost-cutting, including 550 job cuts announced in July on top of nearly 1900 roles shed earlier in 2024.
Revenue was flat at $23.9bn.
Despite the soft mobile performance, Telstra will return $1bn to investors through a share buyback and lift its full-year dividend 5.6 per cent to 19 cents.
It follows a $750m buyback just two months earlier.
'We are focused on continuing to deliver value for our shareholders … carefully consider[ing] the balance between investing in the growth of our business and the potential for additional shareholder returns,' Ms Brady said.
The announcement comes as the Victorian Government proposes mandating two days a week working from home for eligible staff, a move opposed by major business groups, which say such rules interfere with employer-employee agreements.

The UK tech sector is booming – but the government must do more to support it
With each passing day, UK tech grows in importance. What was once viewed by traditionalists as marginal and voguish is now the dominant force in British business. This is why the E2Exchange, or E2E, Tech Track 100 for 2025 is so vital, showcasing the domestic firms that have forged ahead and are succeeding. In association with The Independent, E2E, the leading business networking and mentoring organisation, has published the definitive index of the 100 fastest-growing tech-focused private businesses in the UK. The list is based on their profits over the past three years and is the latest Track 100 to be produced this year. Others in the 2025 series will cover different categories, including job creation, dynamic and profits. To accompany the unveiling, Shalini Khemka, founder of E2E, assembled an online panel of UK tech stars: Jared Owen of digital shopping partner Redbrain; Mike Walters from payment platform Form3; Peter King, director of business banking for fintech bank OakNorth; data-driven and intelligence supplier Quantexa's Imam Hoque; and Dhaval Patel, CEO of Universal Partners, the foreign currency payments provider that is also sponsoring the Track 100s. We kicked off with the key question: is Britain doing enough to support tech? Hoque said he felt the government was on the right lines with R&D credits, creating a 'Silicon Valley' between Oxford and Cambridge, 'but what we and they really need to fix is the investment model for scaling-up start-ups,' he said. 'There are plenty of initiatives for start-ups but as companies grow it starts to get trickier.' Hoque believes more could be done as well, since we're longer in the EU, to buy British. He cited structural models in Canada and Australia where public pension funds are encouraged to invest in tech. 'More pressure could be applied in the UK,' he said. Walters said Britain could 'never move fast enough', since tech is constantly accelerating. Where we can score, he said, is by achieving 'greater clarity and alignment with tech in purpose and regulation and being consistent in their delivery.' There isn't one solution but a host that can combine to create a healthy outlook, he added. 'Buy it if it's British and a British spend, invest so it's funded from UK pension activities, enable regulators to understand and support tech in the UK – all those things have to happen at the same time and consistently to make a real difference.' King addressed the challenge of beginning and entering a globally crowded space. He said that his area, fintech, was one where Britain had been, and is, a world leader. That was down to government and regulators being keen to encourage and lend their backing. He agreed with Hoque that the problems arise higher up, when companies increase in size. Then traditional conservatism and aversion to risk kick in, which is when firms are forced to look outside the UK for their funding. From Redbrain, Owen was asked if the company is getting the talent it needs? 'Honest answer, probably not,' he said. 'Really exceptional people are often drawn to the global tech giants and it can be hard to compete with that.' They choose to go to them because they are playing safe and that is down to a lack of optimism. They have to be invested in and encouraged, and likewise they have to believe in what they're joining and in the longevity of remaining. Recruiting from abroad is becoming more difficult, not helped by leaving the EU, but there is a talent pool in the UK – it just needs to be made bigger and its members need to be less easily swayed by inducements from elsewhere, especially from those big global players. On one issue they and the audience were as one: that we rely on the government too much and that the best assistance tech businesses can receive is from the businesses themselves. At the end, there was some advice for would-be tech entrepreneurs: 'Dig in. Learn it and dig in,' Walters said. Owen said it was about 'creating positive tech experiences for young people, to attract them to the sector, make them grasp its potential and opportunities.' King said while the education system catches up it was up to tech businesses to foster demand, to become as attractive as possible. Patel echoed that with the final say: 'Be the role model you've always wanted to be to others.'

New Nissan Qashqai drives full length of UK – and finishes with 100 miles of petrol to spare!
Nissan has driven a Qashqai fitted with its new e-Power hybrid powertrain the length of the UK – from Land's End to John O'Groats – on a single tank of fuel. The powertrain, which was recently updated to improve its efficiency and refinement, yielded 75mpg in the hands of Nissan engineers while completing the 837-mile drive. That marked an improvement on the result achieved by Nissan on the same journey in 2007, when a 1.5-litre diesel-engined Qashqai clocked 67mpg. According to Nissan, the e-Power car's trip took 18 hours (over two days) and the car reached John O'Groats with enough petrol left in its tank to drive a further 100 miles. The e-Power system behaves differently to most conventional hybrid powertrains: the turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine doesn't drive the wheels at all, instead generating electricity for a small 1.8kWh battery which in turn powers an electric motor. The motor is the car's sole driving force, putting out 201bhp and 243lb ft of torque. Earlier this year, the system was upgraded to a new 'five-in-one' construction, integrating the motor, generator, inverter, increaser and reducer into one package. As well as being smaller, this also improves responsiveness, Nissan claimed. The test result of 75mpg marks a considerable improvement over the system's official economy figure of 62.8mpg. However, Nissan hasn't published an average speed or detailed its driving style for the trip. Slow, gentle driving can net much greater economy than is reflected by official laboratory tests.

Lilly signs $1.3 billion deal with Superluminal to discover obesity medicines using AI
Aug 14 (Reuters) - Eli Lilly (LLY.N), opens new tab has signed a deal worth $1.3 billion with privately held Superluminal Medicines to discover and develop small-molecule drugs through AI to treat obesity and other cardiometabolic diseases. Lilly currently dominates the obesity treatment market, which is estimated to be worth $150 billion by the next decade, and is trying to strengthen its foothold in the space through the development of next-generation drugs, acquisitions and partnerships. The deal gives Lilly access to Superluminal's proprietary artificial-intelligence-driven platform to rapidly discover potential drug candidates targeting G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) - a class of proteins that can influence a range of physiological processes including metabolism, cell growth and immune responses - the drug developer said on Thursday. In a similar move, Danish rival Novo Nordisk ( opens new tab struck a $2.2 billion deal with U.S. biotech Septerna in May to develop oral small-molecule medicines targeting GPCRs for obesity and other cardiometabolic diseases. Lilly has been capitalizing on the overwhelming popularity of the GLP-1 class of medicines, which includes its blockbuster drug Zepbound as well as Novo's Wegovy. It is also developing a keenly watched oral GLP-1 drug, orforglipron, which has failed to meet investors' lofty expectations. The drugmaker teamed up with Hong Kong-listed biotech Laekna ( opens new tab last year to develop an experimental obesity drug that aims to help patients lose weight while preserving muscle. Lilly will receive exclusive rights to develop and commercialize drug candidates discovered using Superluminal's platform, the drug developer said. As part of the deal, Superluminal is eligible to receive upfront and milestone payments, an equity investment as well as tiered royalties on net sales, the company said. Boston-based startup Superluminal is developing a wholly owned lead candidate targeting a protein called melanocortin 4 receptor to treat certain rare, genetic forms of obesity and is expected to begin human trials next year. The lead candidate is not part of the deal with Lilly. Superluminal is backed by investors including RA Capital Management, Insight Partners and NVentures, NVIDIA's venture capital arm.
