Mike Lynch's sunken yacht to be pulled from Sicilian waters in May
ROME (Reuters) - The superyacht that sank off Sicily last year, killing British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and six others, will be lifted out of the water next month after its mast is dismantled, people close to the matter said on Tuesday.
The recovery of the British-flagged Bayesian, lying on its right side at a depth of around 50 metres (164 feet), could help explain why it went down during a sudden storm off the port of Porticello, near Palermo - an event that has baffled naval experts.
The salvage operation will be managed by a joint venture of Dutch companies HEBO Maritiemservice and Smit Salvage, the Italian officials, who declined to be named as they are not authorised to speak on the matter, said.
Neither company was immediately available to comment.
A ship carrying the mega crane HEBO Lift 10 has left the port of Rotterdam and is currently sailing off the French Atlantic coast, one of the sources said, adding that it will take 10 to 12 days to reach Porticello.
Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian, of whom 15 survived. The survivors included nine of the 10 crew members and Lynch's wife, whose company owned the Bayesian. Lynch's daughter was among those who died.
Italian prosecutors and coastguards have selected a recovery project led by TMC Marine Consultants Ltd, which involves pulling the 72-metre mast out of the water before the rest of the vessel in order to safeguard the hull and evidence it may contain.
Other potential salvage plans, which involved turning the 55.9-metre yacht, which weighs 534 tonnes, almost 90 degrees on the seabed without dismantling its mast, were rejected because of the complexity of the procedure.
Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, have placed three crew members under investigation: Captain James Cutfield, ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton and night watch duty sailor Matthew Griffiths.
They are suspected of manslaughter and causing a shipwreck.
The prosecutors have said the Bayesian will have to be pulled out of the water before the investigation can be concluded.

Sean ‘Diddy' Combs plotting major career comeback at Madison Square Garden after prison release: lawyer
Sean 'Diddy' Combs is gearing up for a major music comeback — and he's landed on Madison Square Garden as his stage. The Bad Boy Records founder, who was found guilty of two counts of prostitution but acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges in July, is looking ahead at his return to the rap scene, his lawyer has revealed. Marc Agnifilo, who has helmed the 55-year-old rapper's legal team, told CBS Mornings that Combs is looking at organizing a comeback concert when he's a free man. 6 Sean 'Diddy' Combs is gearing up for a major music comeback, and he's landed on Madison Square Garden as his stage. RMV/Shutterstock 'He's going to be back at Madison Square Garden — and I said I'll be there,' Agnifilo told Jericka Duncan in a segment set to air Thursday. The legal honcho added that the 'I'll Be Missing You' musician is keen to 'get back with his mother, and the people who love him and miss him.' 'I think he wants to get out of jail, reestablish a loving, present relationship with all of his seven children,' Agnifilo added. When asked if a musical comeback is on the horizon, Agnifilo admitted that while Combs hasn't said anything about getting back into the recording studio, he did have another idea in mind. 6 The Bad Boy Records founder was found guilty of two counts of prostitution but acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges in July. OK, one thing he said, he said he was going to be back in Madison Square Garden.' Duncan then clarified what Combs would be doing at MSG, to which Agnifilo responded, 'I guess being on stage, you know?' 'I think he's someone who's always going to strive to do something, you know, exceptional and probably demanding and challenging,' he added. REUTERS It comes just days after Combs' legal posse confirmed that they have approached the Trump administration about a pardon — even as the president has signaled he's leaning against letting the rapper off the hook. 'It's my understanding that we've reached out and had conversations in reference to a pardon,' Nicole Westmoreland, a member of Combs' defense team, told CNN this week. President Trump on Friday told Newsmax host Rob Finnerty that he was on the fence about whether he would consider pardoning the rapper. 'Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half innocent,' Trump said of the Diddy case. 'Probably – eh, you know, I was very friendly with him. I got along with him great, and seemed like a nice guy. I didn't know him well, but when I ran for office he was very hostile.' 'It's hard, you know, like, we're human beings, and we don't like to have things cloud our judgment, right? But when you knew someone and you were fine, and then you run for office, and he made some terrible statements – so, I don't know, it's more difficult,' the president continued. 6 Sean 'Diddy' Combs performs onstage at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12, 2023 in Newark, New Jersey. Kathy Hochul ‘willing' to consider Raise the Age reforms as she takes victory lap on discovery tweaks
ALBANY – Changes to New York's criminal evidence discovery rules go into effect this week, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday — while signaling she's 'willing to look at' controversial 'Raise the Age' reforms next. The Democrat may not look to pick a fight on Raise the Age — which upped the age of adult criminal responsibility from 16 to 18 — as she's up for re-election in 2026 and following a bruising battle with lawmakers on changes to laws that govern evidence-sharing requirements in criminal cases. Hochul said the tweaks, which go into effect Thursday, are meant to stop cases from being dismissed on technicalities because of reforms that then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state legislature pushed through in 2019. 'That whole case they built to show society that there will be justice for victims is turned upside down on its head, and there was no justice for victims. So, my goal is to stop this,' Hochul said. Gov. Kathy Hochul celebrated changes to New York's discovery laws, which go into effect Thursday. Hans Pennink The five New York City district attorneys, Alvin Bragg, Darcel Clark, Eric Gonzalez, Melinda Katz and Vince McMahon, allied with Hochul in pushing for the changes. Law enforcement officials and some Democratic politicians are now calling for changes to Raise the Age. 'If there's conversations about Raise the Age, the legislative session is the time to do that, and I would certainly entertain conversations on every topic related to criminal justice,' Hochul said. Raise the Age was signed into law by Cuomo in 2017 and directs 16 and 17-year-old offenders to have their cases heard by family court judges, even in serious felonies such as murder. The reforms were meant to set up youth offenders with resources to try to stop them from becoming repeat offenders, something Hochul has said is an area that should be addressed. 'The money that was allocated for programs as alternatives has not gotten out fast enough,' she said. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and other DA's had pushed for the discovery reforms. REUTERS Hochul is facing calls to take on the issue, especially after 10 people were shot, including one killed, during multiple volleys of gunfire and a house was razed with a flare gun following a fireworks display near the state capitol in Albany on July 4. Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Police Chief Brendan Cox ripped Raise The Age in a press conference shortly after the July 4th shootings. 'I don't say that a lot of 15-year-olds need to be taken off the street and put away, but if a 15-year-old is walking down the street and just indiscriminately firing into a crowd, well, I hate to say it, but they got to be taken off the street and they got to go away,' Cox said. Albany District Attorney Lee Kindlon, a Democrat and former defense attorney, has also called for changes to the statute.
