15 Days After Male Snake's Death, ‘Naagin' Returns For ‘Badla' In UP Village
The incident took place in Saraotia village under the Aliganj police station area of Etah district.
A village in Uttar Pradesh's Aliganj district witnessed a night of fear and panic after a female snake entered a house on the day of Nag Panchami, July 29. The snake's presence caused a stir among locals who believed it had come to avenge the death of a male snake that died in the same village about two weeks earlier.
The incident reportedly took place in Saraotia village under the Aliganj police station area of Etah district. The female snake appeared at the house of a man named Pravesh Dixit and stayed there for hours and hissed continuously through the night, Free Press Journal reported. The villagers, alarmed by the situation and their long-held beliefs, said the snake's presence was not a coincidence.
As per the villagers, a male snake had been killed about 15 days ago by mistake at Dixit's house. On the occasion of Nag Panchami, they believe the female snake, 'Naagin', came to seek revenge. This belief is rooted in several parts of India where snakes especially during the month of Sawan are considered sacred. It is often said in folklore that if one snake is killed, its partner may return to avenge its death.
Due to this belief, the presence of the snake led to widespread fear in the village. The entire family living in the house along with many neighbours spent the night in anxiety.
A video showing forest officials trying to catch the snake has also surfaced online. It shows the snake resisting by raising its hood repeatedly.

Eventually, the team managed to capture the snake without harm. The officials then took the snake away from the area and only then did the villagers feel a sense of relief.
Officials Say Monsoon Drives Snakes Out
A forest department official said that due to the rainy season, snakes often enter homes while searching for prey like rats. In this case, the snake may have been hungry and had not hunted for a while which could be why it stayed in one place.

What followed was far more horrifying as another clip showing the cat's head and body parts separated was uploaded. As the footage circulated on social media, users flagged it to the police. Cherpulassery police have launched a probe and are verifying the authenticity of the video. Preliminary findings suggest Shajeer is currently in Tamil Nadu. The police are trying to trace his exact location. According to Kerala Kaumudi, when questioned informally about the act, Shajeer allegedly said, 'Cat meat tastes better than human meat." Authorities are still trying to establish where the video was filmed. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation. Under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, killing or maiming an animal is a punishable offence. The new law, part of the overhaul that replaced the Indian Penal Code, clearly states that anyone who kills, poisons, or renders an animal useless can face up to five years in jail, a fine, or both. The act may also attract charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which lays down additional penalties for causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals. While extreme cases of consuming pets are rare in India, this is not an isolated incident. In Chennai, residents in July 2025 sounded the alarm over a group of youths from the Narikorava community allegedly trapping and killing residential cats for meat, later selling it to roadside eateries as chicken or mutton biryani, according to a report by the Times Of India. Sword of goddess Tuljabhavani safe, says temple trust
Last Updated: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Aug 4 (PTI) Shri Tuljabhawani Temple Sansthan has clarified that the sword of the goddess is safe and not stolen as alleged by some priests last week. 'It was alleged earlier that the sword had been stolen, which is not true. The sword was used earlier in a ritual by Ganeshwar Dravid Shastri of Varanasi in June. The sword has been handed over to the head of Wakojibuwa mutt for performing daily rituals on the sword," the temple trust stated in a release. Some priests of the Tuljabhavani temple on Saturday alleged that the sword of the goddess had gone missing. The ancient Shree Tulaja Bhavani Temple is considered one of the 51 Shakti Pithas located on the banks of the Mandakini River in Dharashiv district of Maharashtra.
