RCMP say one person is dead following a crash between an SUV and a tanker truck on the Alaska Highway north of Fort St. John, B.C., Monday afternoon.
Emergency crews responded to the collision around 1:42 p.m. PT Monday, at the intersection of the Alaska Highway and 269 Road, about one kilometre north of the city.
Police say the SUV was heading southbound when the driver "failed to stop for a red light and collided with the tanker truck," which was making a left turn onto the highway.
The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. RCMP are not releasing the victim's age or gender, but say their family has been notified.

RCMP widen search in P.E.I. car-shooting incident with underwater recovery team

P.E.I. RCMP say their Underwater Recovery Team has been added to the investigation into an incident in western P.E.I. last week that killed a man and injured a Summerside woman, who later died in hospital. In a news release Friday morning, RCMP said the team was deployed Thursday to search waters around the Island, including lakes, ponds, streams, and coastal areas. The team is a specialized RCMP unit made up of police officers who are trained divers. They focus on recovering evidence and bodies from aquatic environments, playing a crucial role in investigations involving submerged victims or evidence, the release said. Cpl. Ellen Peters, media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP, said the Underwater Recovery Team expands the scope of the search. "We're using police dog services, drones and officers with boots on the ground to search the land areas, and now we are adding the ability to search lakes, ponds, streams and into the ocean if needed to find evidence that may contribute to this investigation," Peters was quoted as saying in the release. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, on Hackmatack Road in Urbainville, near Wellington. Police have said the targeted shooting into a car on a dirt section of the road killed a 35-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the 2008 Toyota Corolla. The car then rolled over and hit a utility pole. A female passenger from Summerside, 50, was seriously injured in the crash and later died. Police have said they believe another vehicle was on Hackmatack Road at the time, and a perpetrator fled the scene. On Wednesday, RCMP released a photo of a car they say "may be connected" to the incident. The vehicle is a white, four-door 2007 Honda Accord, and could have the P.E.I. licence plate 202NX, the police force said. No arrests have been made. Police have not named a suspect in the case. RCMP have not identified either of the victims. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle to contact Prince District RCMP at 902-853-9300 or 902-436-9300. People who want to stay anonymous are asked to call P.E.I. Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). RCMP have also launched an online portal where the public can anonymously share images or video related to the case.

'Brutal and senseless assault' leaves senior with multiple injuries on Vancouver Island

A 67-year-old man is recovering from multiple injuries to his face and body after what Comox Valley RCMP are calling "a brutal and senseless assault on a vulnerable member of our community." The incident took place in Lewis Park near downtown Courtenay, B.C., around 11:35 am on Sunday. The accused is a 29-year-old with multiple assault charges and one conviction dating back to 2019. RCMP say he is known to police and has been charged with aggravated assault and robbery. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance. 'He just started pounding on me' Serge Melancon told CBC News he was in his vehicle with his wife, Deirdre Melancon, when a man approached them asking to call 911 because someone was overdosing nearby. Melancon says he immediately agreed, but then the man said he wanted to take the phone to make the call himself. When Melancon declined, a fight allegedly ensued. "He opened the door and started to assault me," Melancon said over the phone from Campbell River, where he lives. "He just started pounding on me." Melancon says he tried to stay calm as he fought off the attacker, partly because the car was running and in drive, with just his foot on the brake. 'There was no emotion in this' As the accused moved further into the vehicle and closer to his wife, Deirdre, a 64-year-old double amputee, she began to defend him as well. "I just took off my seatbelt and got down on the floor and then started hitting him over the head with my coffee cup," she told CBC News. After the cup broke, Deirdre said, she began to hit the man in the face with a small fan they used to cool the vehicle — a bus they had converted into an RV. But the couple says the accused then pulled Serge out of the vehicle and onto the ground. "He pulled him out of the bus so violently he actually bent the door," Deirdre said. Serge says he looked into the man's face. He noticed his assailant's calm expression. "He was really concentrating and doing his job properly. There was no emotion in this," Serge said. Random attack After Serge fell, he says, the man stopped hitting him and began to walk away. Police arrived within seconds. RCMP say when they arrived, they found an older man bleeding from his face. "We are grateful to witnesses who stepped forward to help and to those who provided critical information that led to the quick arrest of the suspect," said Insp. Scott Mercer. The couple says the whole ordeal lasted about five minutes. Police say the accused was immediately taken into custody, where he remains until his next court appearance on Aug. 28. Deirdre Melancon says Serge spent the night in hospital, recovering from injuries to his face, knee and body. The couple has since returned to Campbell River, where Deirdre lives in a long-term care home. Serge says it was a fluke that he and his wife happened to be at the park. They had been camping on nearby Denman Island and had stopped to use the accessible shower facilities at the nearby Lewis Centre. "It was so random that nobody can be mad at nobody, basically," he said.

Footage shows truck dodging landslide in Indonesia, not India

As flash floods ravaged India's Himalayan region in July and August, footage of a truck narrowly escaping debris from a mountain spread in social media posts claiming it showed the northern state of Himachal Pradesh. However, the video previously circulated in reports about a landslide in West Sumatra in 2024, and visual evidence confirms the clip is from Indonesia. "Landslide in Chamba: Truck narrowly escapes, driver cheats death. Watching the video of this landslide in Chamba, it's clear the driver's luck was on his side," reads part of a Hindi-language Facebook post shared August 1, 2025. The video, which racked up more than 132,000 views, shows a truck escaping debris falling off a mountain. The clip circulated with similar claims in posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads as torrential rain hit Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand states in India's northern Himalayan region in July and August, killing at least 69 people (archived link). On August 5, a flash flood driving a torrent of mud smashed into a town in northern Uttarakhand state, killing at least four people with around 100 others missing (archived link). Scores of people die each year during the rainy season due to flash floods and landslides across India (archived link). But the clip actually shows a landslide on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in Indonesia's West Sumatra province. A Google reverse image search of keyframes from the clip found a longer video published May 20, 2024 on YouTube, which credits Reuters and the video agency Newsflare (archived link). The clip, titled "Truck escapes landslide after prolonged heavy rainfall in Indonesia", was flipped horizontally in the false social media posts. The original video published by Newsflare is captioned: "A tanker truck loaded with CPO narrowly escaped being crushed by a landslide in West Sumatra in Indonesia on May 17. This incident was witnessed by residents who were also passing through the area (archived link)." The caption adds that no casualties were reported. Media outlets CNN Indonesia and SINDOnews published the clip in reports about the incident (archived here and here). Hours of heavy rain caused large volcanic rocks to roll down one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes into two districts on Sumatra island on May 11, 2024, while flooding inundated roads, homes and mosques (archived link). The death toll from flash floods and cold lava flow from a volcano in western Indonesia was reported at 41, with 17 more missing on May 13. An AFP journalist in Indonesia confirmed the blue-and-white vehicle seen escaping the landslide is a fuel tanker operated by the Indonesian state-owned oil and natural gas company Pertamina, which has previously commented on the colour-coding (archived link). AFP has previously debunked other claims related to India's monsoon.
