Nationals pitcher Trevor Williams to have surgery for partial UCL tear, out until next season

ST. LOUIS (AP) — National right-hander Trevor Williams said Wednesday night that an MRI exam of his elbow revealed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament, and he will undergo surgery next week that will keep him out until at least next season.
Williams, who re-signed with Washington on a $14 million, two-year deal last winter, has been limited to only 30 starts over the past two seasons because of arm problems. He was 3-10 with a 6.21 ERA in 17 starts this season, his last coming July 2, when he allowed seven runs on nine hits and a walk in just three innings in a loss to Detroit.
The 33-year-old Williams only has a partial tear of the ligament, and the hope is an internal brace procedure will be enough to treat the injury. But orthopedist Jeffrey Dugas, who will perform the surgery next Thursday, said Williams could require Tommy John surgery if the ligament is more damaged than the MRI exam showed.
Interim manager Miguel Castro filled Williams' rotation spot last weekend with Shinnosuke Ogasawara, who allowed four runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings in his big league debut. Ogasawara is expected to make another start this weekend in Milwaukee.

British horseracing to go on strike in protest against rise in betting taxes

LONDON (AP) — British horseracing will stage an unprecedented one-day strike on Sept. 10 to protest a proposed rise in taxes on race betting. The four scheduled meetings that day — at Carlisle, Uttoxeter, Lingfield and Kempton — will not take place after agreements between the owners of the courses and the British Horseracing Authority, making it the first time the sport in Britain has voluntarily refused to race in modern history. The BHA set up the 'Axe the Racing Tax' campaign in response to proposals to replace the existing three-tax structure of online gambling duties with a single tax, with fears the current 15% duty on racing could be increased to the 21% levied on games of chance. Brant Dunshea, chief executive at the British Horseracing Authority, said the strike intends to 'highlight to (the) government the serious consequences of the treasury's tax proposals which threaten the very future of our sport.' 'British racing is already in a precarious financial position and research has shown that a tax rise on racing could be catastrophic for the sport and the thousands of jobs that rely on it in towns and communities across the country,' Dunshea said. 'This is the first time that British racing has chosen not to race due to government proposals. We haven't taken this decision lightly but in doing so we are urging the government to rethink this tax proposal to protect the future of our sport which is a cherished part of Britain's heritage and culture.' The British government said it was bringing the 'treatment of online betting in line with other forms of online gambling to cut down bureaucracy.' 'It is not about increasing or decreasing rates,' the government said, 'and we welcome views from all stakeholders including businesses, trade bodies, the third sector and individuals.' ___ AP sports:

Jaguars scratch Travis Hunter ahead of preseason game against the Saints

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Travis Hunter was scratched Sunday by the Jacksonville Jaguars before their preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner out of Colorado and No. 2 pick in last spring's NFL draft, had missed practice in recent days because of what team officials have described as an upper-body injury. The Jaguars also scratched veteran wide receiver Dyami Brown, although it was not immediately clear why. Hunter and Brown both played in Jacksonville's preseason opener last week, a 31-25 loss to Pittsburgh. Hunter, a rare, two-way player, caught two passes for 9 yards and also participated in eight plays as a defensive back. Brown had 7 yards rushing on an end-around.
