Football players' union hits back at 'autocratic' FIFA, Infantino in fallout from CWC - World
'Football needs responsible leadership, not emperors,' the FIFPRO network said after a meeting of 58 national player unions responded to FIFA pursuing its agenda with unofficial player representatives.
'It needs fewer autocratic monologues and more genuine, inclusive and transparent dialogue,' the union added.
FIFA announced two weeks ago it reached a consensus on key issues after Infantino hosted a group of mostly non-recognized officials in New York ahead of the Club World Cup final.
The latest rift between football's governing body and its players' unions flared while the European Commission in Brussels is considering a formal complaint against FIFA. It was filed by FIFPRO's European division and national leagues in Europe against FIFA's style of governance and decision-making.
FIFPRO said FIFA's core agenda included an overloaded global match calendar with too many games for elite players, lack of physical and mental recovery periods and extreme playing conditions.
Players at the month-long Club World Cup in the United States reported feeling dizzy and unwell in the heat of daytime games played to appeal to worldwide TV audiences.
The 63-game tournament backed by Saudi Arabian money was lucrative for clubs, especially in Europe, though FIFA added it to the schedule without formally consulting players.
The tournament, FIFPRO said, was 'celebrated by President Infantino despite being held under conditions that were extreme and inappropriate for any human being, demonstrating a troubling insensitivity to human rights, even when it concerns elite athletes.
'FIFPRO reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of men and women players — rights which are being seriously undermined by commercial policies imposed by its autocratic system of governance,' the Netherlands-based union said of FIFA.
'This is a model that puts the health of players at risk and sidelines those at the heart of the game,' FIFPRO said, adding it was 'unacceptable for an organization that claims global leadership to turn a blind eye to the basic needs of the players.'
FIFA was approached for comment.
FIFPRO has not had a formal working agreement with FIFA since the previous one expired in 2023.

Premier League side Chelsea loaned teenage defender Mamadou Sarr back to sister club Strasbourg on Friday for the upcoming Ligue 1 season. The French club confirmed the loan move on its website, having sold the highly rated Sarr to Chelsea in June. Formula One: Norris on top as McLaren dominate opening Hungary practice - Omni sports
Lando Norris topped the times ahead of series leader and team-mate Oscar Piastri as McLaren ruled Friday's opening practice for this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. Norris, who is 16 points adrift of Piastri in the drivers' world championship, clocked a best lap in one minute and 16.052 seconds to outpace the Australian by 0.019 seconds on a dry and sunlit day at the Hungaroring. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was third ahead of Racing Bulls' impressive rookie Isack Hadjar, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari and rookie Oliver Bearman of Haas. Leclerc was two-tenths adrift of the McLarens and four-tenths clear of Hadjar. Mercedes' rookie Kimi Antonelli was seventh ahead of team-mate George Russell, four-time champion Max Verstappen, who on Thursday confirmed he will stay with Red Bull next year, and Lance Stroll of Aston Martin. Newcastle reject Liverpool bid for Isak: Reports - World
Newcastle have rejected Liverpool's opening bid to sign unsettled Sweden striker Alexander Isak, according to reports on Friday. Isak has been training at his old club Real Sociedad this week after reportedly telling Newcastle he wants to leave St James' Park. The 25-year-old has been linked with Liverpool since the end of last season and the Premier League champions are now believed to have formalised their interest with an offer of around £110 million ($159 million) plus potential add-ons. But Newcastle, who reportedly value Isak at £150 million, remain keen to hold onto their prize asset and have rebuffed Liverpool's initial bid. Isak, who joined Newcastle in a £60 million move from Real Sociedad in 2022, scored 23 Premier League goals last season to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League. He has three years left on his Newcastle contract, but did not travel to Asia for the Magpies' ongoing pre-season tour, with the club saying he had a minor thigh injury. On Thursday, Real Sociedad confirmed he was at their Zubieta facility with his own trainers. It was reported on Friday that Newcastle had told Isak he could agree a new deal containing a get-out clause for next year, but he responded by insisting he wants to move now.
