EU, Japan agree to work together to promote free trade, economic security
The agreement followed a meeting among European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. It comes just as Tokyo and Washington reached a new trade deal, which places 15 per cent tariffs on Japanese cars and other goods imported into the US, down from an initial 25 per cent.
The leaders agreed to launch 'competitiveness alliance" aimed at stepping up trade, economic security and cooperation in innovation, energy and other areas, according to a joint statement released by the EU.
The leaders also supported 'a stable and predictable rules-based free and fair economic order," and reaffirmed the importance of Japan-EU cooperation to uphold multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organisation at its core, as well as with other multilateral cooperation efforts.
Japan and the EU have been stepping up their security and defence cooperation amid growing global tensions and conflicts, including Russia's war on Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East and increasingly assertive China's military activity in Asia, recognizing that challenges in Europe and Indo-Pacific are inseparable. India signs up for 3-day UN meet for peaceful Palestine

(Pic credit: AP) NEW DELHI: India is expected to participate in the upcoming UN high-level conference on the peaceful settlement of the Palestine question and the implementation of the two-state solution, amid renewed international efforts to end the war in Gaza. According to the list of delegates, 123 countries and agencies, including India, have signed up for the three-day meeting beginning Monday. The conference will be co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, both of which are key strategic partners for India. India had earlier voted in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution that called for an international summit in June 2025 to discuss the two-state solution. However, the summit had to be postponed due to the Iran-Israel conflict. US had last month warned countries against participating in the conference, arguing it could undermine ongoing efforts to end the war and secure the release of hostages, according to a diplomatic cable seen and reported by Reuters from Paris and Washington. The conference has drawn global attention, especially following French President Emmanuel Macron's announcement that France would recognise Palestine as a state-making it the first G7 country to do so. The US has condemned France's move and will boycott the conference, along with Israel. India's permanent representative to the UN, P Harish, acknowledged the conference during a recent Security Council session on the Palestinian question. "While engaging in a forward-leaning and constructive manner, it is our hope that this conference would pave the way for concrete steps towards achieving a two-state solution," Harish said, while also calling for an immediate ceasefire and release of hostages. India, which was among 19 countries that abstained from a UNGA vote in June calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, has been in regular contact with the working groups and is expected to offer further inputs during the conference. The level of India's representation at the conference is still being finalised. On Gaza issue, India continues to balance its growing strategic partnership with Israel and its long-standing support for Palestinian cause. "India shares historic and strong ties with Palestinian brothers and sisters. We've stood by them and our commitment towards Palestinian cause is unwavering," Harish said. MEA also reiterated in Parliament on Friday that India remains committed to a negotiated two-state solution, leading to a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine living in peace with Israel within secure and recognised borders.

Pope receives high-ranking Russian Orthodox cleric

(Pic credit: AP) VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV held a first meeting on Saturday with a senior Russian Orthodox cleric at the Vatican since becoming the head of the Catholic church earlier this year, the Holy See said without giving further details. Leo -- who has called on the Kremlin to make a "gesture" towards peace in Ukraine -- received Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, the head of external relations at the Russian Orthodox Church. Relations between the Vatican and Moscow has been frosty for centuries. The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, has sanctified Moscow's Ukraine invasion, which he has described as a "holy war." But Moscow had a dialogue with the late Pope Francis, widely criticised in Ukraine, with Metropolitan Anthony hold around a dozen meetings with the Argentinian pontiff. The Russian cleric told Italian newspaper La Repubblica days before the meeting that Francis had a "balanced approach" on Ukraine, while he did not know Leo's stance yet. Leo is the first American pope. He took over the church at a time when the United States is pushing for peace in Ukraine, in efforts that have so far yielded few results to stop the three-year war. Leo had received Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this month and has also spoken to Russia's Vladimir Putin by phone. The Vatican had earlier this year been floated as a possible platform for peace talks, but that idea was refuted by the Kremlin and negotiations have stayed in Istanbul. Anthony reiterated that, for Moscow, the Vatican would not be a "neutral" ground for any peace talks. Metropolitan Anthony was appointed as head of the Moscow church's external relations in 2022 -- the year Russia invaded Ukraine -- and had earlier been a church envoy in Italy.
