Mason Thames, who stars as Hiccup in the remake, recalls Butler's powerful presence on setGerard Butler was all too perfect to play a viking chief in How to Train Your Dragon.
Costar Mason Thames, who plays Hiccup in the 2025 live-action remake of the beloved animated movie series, recounts how the 55-year-old Scottish actor evoked an intimidating viking spirit while filming.
"When he would walk on set, you would feel that presence," Thames, 17, says of Butler, who reprises his role of Stoick the Vast from the animated films. "It's insane to see it in person and him bringing that character to life with the voice, the energy, the giant brute force that Stoick is — him bringing that to life was so incredible to watch."

Thames notes that Butler, who has previously played intimidating characters such as Leonidas the King of Sparta in 300, was impressive to witness once he transformed into mighty Chieftain of Berk.
"I feel like he would walk on set and everybody would kind of cower a little bit, including myself," Thames says, describing how people would see Butler in full costume and makeup — beard, armor and all — and call him "chief."
The Black Phone 2 actor says that working with Butler and "building chemistry" as they tackled their father-son dynamic for the film was enjoyable because of the "energy" he brought to set.
The new film is directed by Dean DeBlois, director of the animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, The three animated films, inspired by author Cressida Cowell's bestselling book series, came out in 2010, 2014 and 2019, and each earned Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature.

Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce Relationship Update June 2025
Taylor Swift is enjoying her time off after finishing her record-breaking Eras Tour last year. The tour launched in 2023 and made history as the highest-grossing tour ever with over $2 billion in ticket sales. It was comprised of 149 shows and took Taylor all across the globe, from the US and Canada to Asia and Latin America, before concluding in December. Since then, she's been spending quality time with Travis Kelce, whom she began dating in 2023, and as the upcoming NFL season approaches, sources say she's also looking forward to supporting him on the sidelines. A source tells People, "Taylor is really looking forward to the upcoming NFL season. Not just because she loves supporting Travis, but because for the first full season since they started dating, she's not juggling a packed tour schedule." Of course, Taylor managed to attend Travis's games even in the midst of the tour, like when she memorably supported him at the 2024 Super Bowl, where he and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers. But, as the source said, it was challenging. "The past two seasons were a whirlwind between performing across multiple countries, long flights, and trying to squeeze in alone time together wherever possible," the source shared, adding, "It wasn't easy, but they made it work." And now that the tour is over, the source said Taylor is "genuinely excited to have the time and flexibility to show up for Travis more consistently." "This fall will be completely different," the source continued. "Taylor plans to be at as many of his games as possible. They've both had such demanding schedules for so long, so having this stretch of time where things aren't quite as chaotic feels like a welcome change." The source added that it's also "a chance for them to settle into more of a routine" and that Taylor and Travis are "both really happy about that." Aww! Can't wait to see her at the games! (Let's just hope the crowds are a little nicer this time.)
