How the team qualified
Zambia secured their TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations place by eliminating Angola in the second round of the qualifiers. The Copper Queens recorded a dominant 6–0 away win in Luanda and followed it up with another 6–0 victory at home in Lusaka.
This emphatic triumph reflects the continued rise of a young yet experienced squad, which also featured at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON history
Zambia has emerged as a rising force in recent years. Their best performance to date remains a third-place finish in 2022, earned after defeating Nigeria in the third-place play-off. It marked their first-ever continental medal. The team went on to make history again by qualifying for the 2023 World Cup, where they claimed their first win at the tournament with a 3–1 victory over Costa Rica.
Players to watch
Barbra Banda: A true icon of Zambian football, the captain is a powerful and determined striker capable of changing a game single-handedly. She made headlines with back-to-back hat-tricks at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics against China and the Netherlands. She repeated the feat at Paris 2024 against Australia.
Now playing for Orlando Pride in the NWSL, she continues to impress with her consistency, charisma, and ability to step up in key moments. A natural leader, she embodies the hopes of a nation dreaming of establishing itself among the elite of women's football.
Racheal Kundananji: Together with Banda, she forms a formidable attacking duo. Her explosiveness, power, and eye for goal make her one of the most closely watched players on the continent. After a standout spell with Madrid CFF, she made headlines with a record-breaking move to Bay FC, becoming the most expensive African player in history and completing the second-costliest transfer in the history of women's football. At both club and international level, she is known for her composure in front of goal and her rare ability to create space in opposition defences.
Head Coach
Nora Häuptle was appointed as Zambia's head coach in January 2025, following a successful stint in charge of Ghana. The Swiss tactician and former international is known for her tactical discipline, defensive solidity, and preference for rapid transitional play. Since taking over, she has instilled a new level of discipline within the Copper Queens while building a competitive side around the attacking prowess of Banda and Kundananji to compete at continental and global stages.
Ambitions and Group Analysis
Under Häuptle's guidance, the Copper Queens aim to reach new heights by cementing their place among Africa's women's football powerhouses. Drawn in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, they face a tough challenge. In this tightly contested group, the Copper Queens will look to continue their ascent and prove they can match the continent's strongest teams.

Euro 2025: Tears for Italy and hope for the future after emotional semifinals loss to England - World

Italy captain Cristiana Girelli and defender Lucia Di Guglielmo cried as they walked around the field after an emotional semifinal loss — 2-1 after extra time to England on Tuesday — each with one arm around the other's waist. They waved goodbye to fans and their shared Women's European Championship title hopes inside Stade de Genève, which had been a joyous second home for them in Switzerland. Less than hour earlier, Italy had been little more than one minute away from advancing to a final few had imagined. 'I feel that something has ended that we didn't want to end, because I still don't believe it's over,' the 35-year-old Girelli said, in tears again in the player interview area. 'Probably fate has been a little cruel to us.' Goalkeeper's grief Goalkeeper Laura Guilani had been alone with her emotions after fulltime, face down on the turf in midfield. It would have been Italy's first trip to the Women's Euros title match since 1997. No Italian team had won a knockout game at the tournament in 28 years until Girelli's 90th-minute winning goal against Norway last Wednesday in the same stadium. In a heartbreaking end to the semis for Italy, England teenager Michelle Agyemang first took victory away with a game-tying goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time at the end of the regulation. Then, just as a penalty shootout loomed, England clinched the victory with Chloe Kelly's goal in the 119th to send the defending champion to Sunday's final. Adding to Italy's sense of unfairness, Kelly scored by swooping on a rebound after Guiliani had saved her penalty kick. Minute details 'We were one minute away from the final,' Italy coach Andrea Soncin said at a post-game news conference. 'The players have deserved a different end, but unfortunately it happens sometimes you don't get what you deserve,' he said in translated comments. The Italian team was ecstatic in the 33rd when Barbara Bonansea lashed a volleyed shot rising into the England net. For the fifth straight game Italy scored first, adding England to that list of opponents that includes World Cup champion Spain. Bonansea ran toward the Italy bench with her tongue sticking out, with a broad smile, to be embraced by her teammates. The team's emotions were evident and powerful even before kickoff. The national anthem had been sung with gusto, concluding with a yelled crescendo that had some players bent over with the effort. Protecting their lead from England attacks in the second half, center backs Elena Linari and Cecilia Salvai were defiant and Di Guglielmo had made a key header by the goalpost to clear imminent danger. Di Guglielmo's emotional post-game walk to salute Italy supporters was made wearing the jersey of their nemesis — Kelly's No. 18 — they had exchanged after the game. World Cup next Soncin acknowledged women's soccer in Italy was playing catch-up to nations which had more established programs, like England. 'It's another step we have to make to better manage these situations.' In two years there will be a World Cup in Brazil where Italy, if it qualifies, will have a reputation and new-found respect to defend. With Girelli also? 'We achieved something great, something stratospheric, but we'll see,' the storied veteran said of her chances of playing on until then. 'These emotions are too beautiful to not want to relive them.' Venus Williams Becomes 2nd Oldest Woman to Win WTA Game

Rana Atef Early Wednesday, Venus Williams reached a new milestone in her career after being the second oldest female tennis player to win a WTA game. The seven-time Grand Slam champion said after the game, 'I had to come back because they informed me earlier this year I'm on COBRA.' s She defeated world No. 35 Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. 'So I was like, 'I gotta get my benefits!' You guys know what it's like. I'm always at the doctor so I need this insurance.' Williams entered this tournament as a wild card and she didn't play on the WTA Tour since March 2024. She didn't win any official match in 709 days. Williams admits that she never officially retired. She never closed the door. In her last few years on tour, the results weren't good. Injuries piled up, as they tend to do for athletes who approach their 40s. 'There were so many times I wanted to coast and kind of chill,' Williams said. 'Do you know how hard it is to play tennis? You don't know how much work goes into this. It's 9-to-5 except you're running the whole time and then lifting weights and then you're repeating it the next day.' Williams is not the oldest women's player to win a match on the WTA Tour. That would be Martina Navratilova winning a first-round match at Wimbledon in 2004. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
