In Johor, school van driver pleads not guilty to causing death of five-year-old left in vehicle
BATU PAHAT, May 7 — A school van driver pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of causing a young boy's death by leaving him in the vehicle in Taman Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri, last month.
Yau Chee Weng, 56, entered the plea after the charge was read to him in Mandarin before Judge Mohamad Khalid Abd Karim.
Yau is accused of leaving the five-year-old boy in a multipurpose van, resulting in the child's death, in front of a kindergarten in Taman Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri, between 8am and 12.05pm on April 30.
He is charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment, a fine not exceeding RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.
In addition, pursuant to Section 31(2) of the Act, the court shall order any convicted person to execute a good behaviour bond for an appropriate period and perform community service of between 36 and 240 hours, to be completed within six months.
Deputy public prosecutor Sharifah Natasha Syed Ahmad appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by counsel Goh Toh Jen.
Mohamad Khalid allowed Yau to be released on bail of RM7,000 with one surety, subject to additional conditions that he must not interfere with witnesses and must surrender his passport pending the disposal of the case.
The court then fixed June 12 for the next case mention.
On May 1, the media reported that a five-year-old kindergarten pupil had died after being left in a school van for over four hours in Taman Bukit Indah.
Iskandar Puteri police chief ACP M. Kumarasan said the boy, believed to have been left behind when the driver dropped off other pupils around 7.30 am, was found unconscious in the van at noon.
Subsequently, police arrested a man employed as a school van driver in the Taman Bukit Indah area at 2.40pm the same day. — Bernama

KTMB blames cable theft for train delays up north, plans RM12.8m prevention upgrade
KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 — Cable theft involving the signalling and communication systems on three Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad's (KTMB) northern routes today has caused disruption and train delays of more than 60 minutes for both the Northern Komuter and Electric Train Services (ETS). KTMB in a statement said among the affected locations were the Tapah Road - Sungkai (KM250.5) route with approximately 200 metres of cable stolen, Kamunting - Bukit Merah - Bagan Serai (KM87.25) with 110 metres stolen, and Simpang Ampat - Bukit Mertajam (KM15.5) with 40 metres affected. The incident disrupted train operations, causing significant delays of between 80 and 115 minutes involving the following services; EP9172 (KL Sentral - Butterworth), EG9321 (Butterworth - Segamat), EX9107 (Butterworth - KL Sentral), EX9207 (Padang Besar - KL Sentral), and EG9420 (Segamat - Padang Besar). In addition, the Northern KTM Komuter service on the Ipoh - Butterworth - Ipoh route was also affected, with average delays of 30 minutes. KTMB said early notifications of the disruptions were sent to passengers via SMS and KTMB's official social media platforms. KTMB chief operating officer Mohd Zain Mat Taha in the same statement said 45 cases of cable theft have been recorded in the northern sector from January to May this year. 'This type of theft amounts to sabotage of railway infrastructure and could threaten the safety of hundreds of passengers while also crippling public transportation,' he said. As a mitigation measure, KTMB announced a plan to upgrade its signalling network, involving an estimated cost of RM12.8 million annually over the next three years, with a focus on hotspot areas. Among the planned improvements are installing manhole covers with special locking mechanisms at 21 locations, enhancing surveillance and prevention infrastructure including CCTV cameras and drones, and installing anti-climb security fencing. Additionally, he said monitoring and patrols by KTMB Auxiliary Police with cooperation from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would be intensified in hotspot areas to curb theft. 'We (KTMB) would like to call for the public's cooperation to report any suspicious activity to the authorities in order to combat such crime. 'We also apologise for any inconvenience experienced by passengers and remain committed to ensuring train service safety and reliability in the interest of the people and the country,' he added. Since 2024, total losses from cable theft in the northern sector has reached RM1.44 million, comprising RM1.28 million in 2024 and RM162,000 as of March 2025. — Bernama

Police to question bus driver after hospital release, remand request to wait
IPOH, June 10 — Police are seeking a remand order for the driver involved in the fatal crash that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students once he is discharged from hospital. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the driver is currently being treated at Taiping Hospital. 'We will have to wait for him to be discharged before any further action is taken,' he was quoted by The Star as telling a news conference here today. Noor Hisam said the bus driver has yet to give a statement. The driver was previously reported to have suffered hand injuries in the 1am Monday crash along the East-West Highway near Gerik, Perak. The chartered bus carrying the UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu to their main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). The crash killed 15 and injured 33 others, including the bus driver, his assistant, and a family of four in the MPV.

Tears, prayers in Terengganu as UPSI students buried following fatal Gerik crash
JERTIH, June 10 — Three more Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who were killed in the road crash on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Gerik, Perak, on Monday were laid to rest early today. The remains of Fatin Nasrien Fadil, 22, were buried at the Kampung Kerandang Cemetery here at 4.10 am. Around 100 people, including family members, friends, villagers, and Jabi state assemblyman Datuk Dr Azman Ibrahim-who is also the Terengganu State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Food Security and Commodities Committee chairman-were present to pay their final respects. Meanwhile, the remains of Fakhrul Arif Rosdi, 20, and Sufea Adela Maslihaizan, 21, were buried at the Kampung Pasir Akar Muslim Cemetery and the Kampung Gong Penaga Muslim Cemetery, respectively, at about 4.30 am. Earlier, funeral prayers for Fatin Nasrien, Fakhrul Arif, and Sufea Adela, along with 10 other UPSI students, were held at Masjid Hadhari here after the bodies arrived from the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh, Perak, at 2.55 am. It is understood that another eight bodies will also be buried early this morning. Meanwhile, the bodies of Nurul Fatihah Abu Setaman, 22, and Nurul Izyanti Muhamad Azhar, 21, are scheduled to be buried around 9 am today at the Kampung Gong Duek Cemetery and the cemetery at Jalan Hospital Jerteh, respectively. In the crash that occurred between 12.30 am and 1 am, 15 UPSI students were killed when a chartered bus travelling from Jertih to Tanjung Malim overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza on the JRTB near Tasik Banding.
