Van driver pleads not guilty to causing boy's death
BATU PAHAT: A school van driver pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of causing a young boy's death by leaving him in the vehicle in Taman Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri, last month. Yau Chee Weng, 56, entered the plea after the charge was read to him in Mandarin before Judge Mohamad Khalid Abd Karim. Yau is accused of leaving the five-year-old boy in a multipurpose van, resulting in the child's death, in front of a kindergarten in Taman Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri, between 8.00 am and 12.05 pm on April 30. He is charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment, a fine not exceeding RM50,000, or both, upon conviction. In addition, pursuant to Section 31(2) of the Act, the court shall order any convicted person to execute a good behaviour bond for an appropriate period and perform community service of between 36 and 240 hours, to be completed within six months. Deputy public prosecutor Sharifah Natasha Syed Ahmad appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by counsel Goh Toh Jen. Mohamad Khalid allowed Yau to be released on bail of RM7,000 with one surety, subject to additional conditions that he must not interfere with witnesses and must surrender his passport pending the disposal of the case. The court then fixed June 12 for the next case mention. On May 1, the media reported that a five-year-old kindergarten pupil had died after being left in a school van for over four hours in Taman Bukit Indah. Iskandar Puteri police chief ACP M. Kumarasan said the boy, believed to have been left behind when the driver dropped off other pupils around 7.30 am, was found unconscious in the van at noon. Subsequently, police arrested a man employed as a school van driver in the Taman Bukit Indah area at 2.40 pm the same day.

Van driver charged over death of 5-year-old left behind in vehicle
BATU PAHAT: A 57-year-old driver was charged in the Sessions Court with child abandonment for allegedly leaving a boy,5, locked in a van for hours, resulting in his death. The accused, Yau Chee Weng, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read in Mandarin before Judge Mohamad Khalid Abd Karim. According to the charge, Yau, a retiree, was entrusted with the care of the victim but allegedly abandoned the boy in the vehicle at Taman Bukit Indah, Johor Baru, between 8am and 12.05pm on 30 April. The offence falls under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Sharifah Natasha Syed Ahmad proposed bail at RM15,000 with additional conditions, but the court set bail at RM7,000 with one surety. Yau was also ordered to surrender his passport and is barred from contacting prosecution witnesses pending the conclusion of the case. The court fixed 16 June for document submission and case mention.

Van driver charged with neglect leading to death of five-year-old
BATU PAHAT: A school van driver has been charged with neglect that allegedly led to the death of a five-year-old boy who was found unconscious in his vehicle last month. Yau Chee Weng, 56, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read in Mandarin before Sessions Court judge Mohamad Khalid Ab Karim on Wednesday (May 7). According to the charge sheet, the accused left five-year-old Teo Yu Ze, who was under his care, unattended in the locked van, leading to the child's death. Yau was accused of committing the offence in front of a kindergarten in Jalan Indah 10/14, Taman Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri, between 8am and 12.05pm on April 30. He was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect or omission to care for a child in a manner likely to cause physical injury. The case was prosecuted by deputy public prosecutor Sharifah Natasha Syed Ahmad, while the accused was represented by lawyer Goh Toh Jen. Sharifah Natasha requested the court to set bail at RM15,000, but Goh asked for a lower amount, noting that the accused is a retiree who works as a part-time van driver. The judge set bail at RM7,000 and fixed June 12 for the next mention and submission of documents. Yau is also required to report to the nearest police station once a month, surrender his passport to the court, and refrain from disturbing witnesses involved in the case. He later posted bail. It was reported that the boy was found unconscious in a school van outside a kindergarten in Taman Bukit Indah on April 30. He was believed to have been left behind after the driver dropped off other students at around 7.30am. The child was found at noon and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The suspect was arrested at 2.40pm the same day in the Taman Bukit Indah area.
