De-escalation of Iran-Israel conflict pushes oil down, aids India bond bulls

Indian government bonds experienced a rise following a sharp decrease in oil prices
Synopsis Indian government bonds experienced a rise following a sharp decrease in oil prices, spurred by optimism from a potential Israel-Iran ceasefire. This development eased concerns about supply disruptions and inflationary pressures. Consequently, the yield on the benchmark 10-year bond decreased, while the market anticipates upcoming bond sales by New Delhi and state governments. Indian government bonds climbed in early deals on Tuesday, following a sharp drop in oil prices, as U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of an Israel-Iran ceasefire relieved concerns over supply disruptions, easing inflationary woes.
ADVERTISEMENT The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond was at 6.2853% as of 10:00 a.m. IST, a trader at a private bank said, after ending at 6.3053% on Monday.
The five-year 6.75% 2029 bond was at 6.0041% after ending at 6.0304%.
Yields move inversely to prices. "The developments are favourable for bond bulls and we have already seen the reaction, but any larger declines based on this, are unlikely from the current levels," trader with a state-run bank said. Oil prices tumbled, extending their declines in Asian hours, with the benchmark Brent crude contract stabilising below $70 per barrel, after hitting a five-month high of $81.40 on Monday.
ADVERTISEMENT Prices began dropping after Iran chose not to take any action to disrupt supply through the Strait of Hormuz but instead attacked a U.S. military base in Qatar. India imports a bulk of its crude oil needs and higher prices could impact the nation's inflation outlook.

Earlier this month, the Reserve Bank of India reduced its inflation forecast for 2025 to 3.7% and cut its key lending rate by a steeper-than-expected 50 basis points. Focus is expected to shift to fresh supply as New Delhi will sell 300 billion rupees ($3.48 billion) worth of the benchmark bond on Friday, while states aim to raise 272 billion rupees through debt sale later in the day.
ADVERTISEMENT RATES Indian overnight index swap (OIS) rates declined amid receiving interest across the curve.
The one-year OIS rate was at 5.48% and the two-year OIS rate was at 5.49%. The liquid five-year dropped 7 basis points to 5.69%.

Why did Adani Ports shares surge 5% as Iran-Israel announced ceasefire?

Adani Ports share price gained on the NSE today, rising nearly 5 per cent in the intraday trade. The stock of the Adani Group company rose 4.7 per cent to hit a high of ₹1,418.7 per share on the stock exchange. On the BSE, the stock hit a high of ₹1,418.85 per share. At 11:05 AM, Adani Ports shares were trading 3.8 per cent higher on the National Stock Exchange as against a 1 per cent rise in the benchmark Nifty50 index. Why are Adani Ports shares rising today? Adani Ports shares were rising in trade today after Iran and Israel announced a ceasefire to end their '12-day war'. Adani Ports jointly owns a 70 per cent stake in Haifa Ports in Israel. In 2023, Adani Ports and Israel's Gadot Group acquired a 70-per cent stake in Haifa Ports for $1.18 billion. Haifa Port is one of the major seaports in Israel. According to reports, Israel's largest oil refinery, Bazan, had suspended all operations at the Haifa Port last week, following Iranian missile strikes. Meanwhile, in a Social Truth post, US President Donald Trump claimed early this morning that Iran and Israel have reached a "complete and total ceasefire". This came hours after Iran fired limited missiles towards the US military base in Qatar. In another post, at around 10:30 AM IST, Trump said that the ceasefire announced by him was in effect. Nonetheless, reports suggested Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel, this morning, soon after Trump claimed about broking a ceasefire agreement between the two countries. Adani Ports share price target Adani Ports shares have zoomed over 15 per cent so far in calendar year 2025 as against 4 per cent rise in the benchmark indices. The stock hit a 52-week high of ₹1,604.95 on the NSE on August 1, 2024, and a 52-week low of ₹995.65 on November 21, 2024. According to analysts at BOB Capital, the logistics sector had a market size ₹21.6 trillion in FY24, growing at an 11 per cent CAGR. However, the market remains highly fragmented — both across service offerings (rail, road, warehousing) and within each segment, where numerous players operate. Adani Ports, according to the brokerage, has added various logistics services to its portfolio, with its strategy anchored on specific criteria such as a strong B2B presence, port adjacency, and leveraging opportunities in rail and trucking. "The ₹15,000–20,000 crore capex will build logistics assets like rakes, MMLPs, and warehouses, targeting ₹11,000 crore in incremental revenue. Asset turns improve gradually as initial utilization is low, given fragmented networks and empty return loads. As demand decentralizes and logistics penetration deepens, cargo flows diversify, driving utilization and revenue growth," it said. The management aims to accelerate this ramp-up through a focused push-pull strategy across assets, which will result in revenue/Ebitda CAGR of 48 per cent/53 per cent over FY25-29E. "The management remains focused on improving ROCE in the medium term, with accretive potential over the long term, despite the sector's high gestation nature. ADSEZ is well-positioned to drive consolidation in segments like trucking, which remain fragmented and inefficient. We conservatively build in a 22 per cent revenue CAGR in logistics over FY25–27E, factoring DFC implementation timelines (8–12 months away)," BOB Capital said. Reflecting the strengthening logistics ecosystem and visible growth path, the brokerage has revised its one-year forward EV/Ebitda multiple to 16x (from 14x) and arrived at a revised Mar-26 share price target of ₹1,720 (vs ₹1,490 earlier).

Colgate Palmolive to introduce more brands in India from its global portfolio

FMCG major Colgate-Palmolive (India) plans to introduce more brands here from the company's global portfolio to upscale its play in India -- one of the drivers for its growth, MD & CEO Prabha Narasimhan said on Monday. The company, having presence in the country with two brands - Colgate and Palmolive - currently operates in the oral care and personal care, and is in "active ongoing conversation" with the parent firm for expanding the portfolio. "We are very excited about what all we can do in India, both with our existing brands and portfolio, and with what we can do with the things that we can bring in from the globe. We have tremendous support from our global counterparts in terms of their excitement about what we can achieve in India," Narasimhan told PTI. About the Palmolive brand, which is currently operating in the personal care space with a premium body wash and hand wash range, Narasimhan said, they have tremendous potential and grow at 20 to 30 per cent CAGR. When asked as whether Colgate-Palmolive India Ltd (CPIL) will extend the brand Palmolive in new segments, she added she would rather focus on introducing more brands. "Actually, more than extending the brand Palmolive, we have a lot of products portfolio that is available globally. We are looking to see what of that product portfolio can legitimately be brought into India and make sense for the Indian consumer, and leverage the strengths that Colgate Palmolive India has. So that's a very active ongoing conversation," she added. CPIL, which has been operating in India for the last 88 years, currently contributes around 4 to 5 per cent of the global revenue of the Midtown Manhattan, New York City-based multinational consumer products major Colgate-Palmolive Company. According to Narasimhan, "in the coming years, the contribution of India will certainly increase." India, with its over 1.4 billion population, is always a "central part" of Colgate's global strategy and is now among five markets, which are called out as being the drivers of growth. "If you listen to our global CEO... who was speaking even recently at a conference where he talked about the fact that India will add more middle-class people in the next few years than any other country in the world, and therefore represents a tremendous opportunity for us," she said. Besides, on the channel side, CPIL, as per its strategy, is also extending its play into the fast-growing e-commerce channels , by adding more digital-first brands, exclusive to online sales channels. It has launched Colgate Purple and Max Fresh Sensories range, mouthwash sticks, which is for a small audience in the market. "We have quite a few, and we have a pipeline of many more," she added. However, she also added that traditional trade, which is neighbourhood kirana stores, is actually the bulk of CPIL's business and critical for the company. It has a "tremendous relationship" with its distributors, many of whom have been with it for decades. Earlier in May, All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF), an umbrella body of FMCG distributors pan-India, had called for the suspension of the purchase of all products of CPIL in Maharashtra, alleging deep discounting by it in favour of quick commerce channels. However, Narasimhan said there is "enough room" for all the channels in the market. Talking about the trend of consumers becoming more health-conscious, seeking better products and organic options, Narasimhan said consumers buy benefits and CPIL has the right science to deliver all of these benefits. Recently, the oral care segment has witnessed heightened competition, where several brands have launched their toothpaste based on ingredients derived from traditional ayurveda and organic options. "Indian consumers are sensible enough to know that they look for a benefit, they find products that deliver to that benefit, and that's our primary job," she said.
