SERDANG: Great Wall Motor (GWM) Malaysia marks a major milestone with the official launch of its all-terrain luxury hybrid flagship — the GWM TANK 500 — at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025.
Expanding the popular Tank sport utility vehicle (SUV) lineup, the brand also unveils its full product range under the brand vision of 'All Scenarios. All Powertrains. All Users.'
The highly anticipated GWM Tank 500 hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) has been met with resounding applause since its unveiling at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) during the autoshow, which runs until May 15.
This launch builds upon GWM's recent showcase at Auto Shanghai 2025, where the brand outlined not only its vision for global innovation but also its deep understanding of local market needs.
A testament to this is its display of vehicles at MAEPS, carefully curated to resonate with Malaysian drivers. These include the adventure-ready Tank 300, the intelligent and efficient Haval H6 HEV, the stylish ORA Good Cat, and the futuristic ORA 07, an EV equipped with cutting-edge smart features.
GWM Tank 500 HEV
Officially priced at RM328,800 on-the-road without insurance, the Tank 500 comes with a six-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty, a lifetime warranty for the engine, transmission and hybrid system, and battery coverage for eight years or up to 200,000km.
It is available in Crystal Gray, Hamilton White and Sun Black.
For a limited time, early adopters of the GWM Tank 500 will receive five years of free service maintenance (inclusive of parts and labour), along with a limited-edition premium gift set for bookings made by May 18, 2025.
Under the hood, the Tank 500 packs a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that powers 20-inch alloy wheels fitted with 265/50 tyres. In addition, the vehicle features the special Tank Turn function, which locks the inside rear wheel, allowing for tighter turns and better maneuverability.
Meanwhile, it also features an intelligent four-wheel-drive (4WD) system paired with an M-Lock differential, along with a Water Depth Detection system that enables it to wade through depths of up to 800mm.
Adding to the list of kit are off-road cruise control, transparent chassis view and 11 driving modes (four on-road and seven off-road).
While featuring striking LEDs for its headlights and rear light clusters, the GWM Tank 500 HEV also comes equipped with roof rails for added utility.
Inside, the cabin offers comfort with powered front seats—eight-way adjustable for the driver with memory function and six-way adjustable for the passenger.
The seats are upholstered in quilted Nappa leather, complemented by artificial wood veneer for a touch of luxury, while ventilation is accorded to the first two seating rows.
This hybrid SUV is also packed with convenience features, including power-folding third-row seats, tri-zone climate controls with ioniser, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless charger and a side-opening tailgate with soft-close functionality.
The driver benefits from a heads-up display along with a 12.3-inch full-colour digital screen, while a larger 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto takes centre stage on the dashboard, powering a 12-speaker Infinity premium sound system.
For added visibility, the infotainment system provides a 360-degree bird's eye view along with a transparent chassis view—especially useful for off-road adventures.
Finally, to further bolster safety, the Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane centring assist, curve speed reduction and a 'Wisdom Dodge' blind spot monitoring system. The suite also features rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking.

Burning ship abandoned in Pacific carried several Chinese car brands
Ship carrying about 3,000 cars, including 800 EVs, has been abandoned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after catching fire. - Reuters EAST ASIA (Bloomberg): A cargo ship that was abandoned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after catching fire Tuesday was carrying cars from several Chinese automakers, according to people familiar with the matter. The Morning Midas was shipping around 3,000 cars from a range of manufacturers including Chery Automobile Co. and Great Wall Motor Co. to Mexico. It's unclear at this stage which brand's electric vehicle caught fire, the people said, who asked not to be identified discussing preliminary findings. The eastern Chinese city of Yantai, the port where the ship originated, also has a SAIC Motor Corp.-GM plant that produces the Buick Envision model, while the charterer of the vessel has been reported by local media to be Anji Logistics, a subsidiary of SAIC. Smoke was first seen coming from a deck of the vessel on Tuesday, whose cargo included about 800 EVs. The crew initiated firefighting procedures but the blaze couldn't be brought under control. Responders were deployed to support salvage and firefighting operations, the ship's manager Zodiac Maritime said in a statement. The US Coast Guard, which said the fire aboard the ship occurred approximately 300 miles south of Adak Island in Alaska, evacuated all 22 crew members and transferred them to a nearby merchant ship. Great Wall Motor had about 140 cars on the ship, although none of them were battery EVs and were not located at the deck where the fire started, one of the people said. A representative from Chery declined to comment. Great Wall Motor didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Calls and an email to Anji Logistics weren't answered. --With assistance from Sarah Chen and Katia Dmitrieva. ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.

Conquering the Desert: GWM's Off-Road Fleet Dominates China's Largest Rally
XINJIANG, CHINA - Media OutReach Newswire - 1 June 2025 - As engines roared across the vast desert skies, the 2025 Taklimakan Rally—dubbed the 'Asian Dakar'—roared to life in China's largest desert. This FIA-certified premier event stretches 4,500 kilometers across Xinjiang, including 2,350 kilometers of grueling special stages through the infamous 'Sea of Death,' Gobi deserts, and dramatic Yardang landforms—terrain long revered as the ultimate test of man and machine. Marking its boldest return yet, GWM enters the fray with its complete lineup of mass-produced vehicles, unshaken by the challenges that lie ahead. Early Dominance Proves Production-Level Excellence GWM has already made a powerful impression, with its unmodified production vehicles dominating key categories. In the T2.1 fuel class, the HAVAL H9 diesel—equipped with a factory-spec 2.4T engine and triple-locking differential—has claimed multiple stage victories, including the punishing SS5 stretch across Moyu's Red and White Mountains. Its confident navigation of shifting dunes and rugged Gobi terrain highlights the brand's expertise in diesel technology and all-terrain engineering. In the hybrid T2E category, the GWM TANK 300 Hi4-T has emerged as a standout contender. Drivers Yao Weiqiang and Zhou Renbin clinched stage wins in SS2, SS6, and SS7, powered by the model's stock Hi4-T system—a 2.0T engine paired with a P2 motor and 9HAT transmission. The setup's seamless torque delivery and rapid responsiveness in intense sandstorms and steep dune climbs reinforce GWM's new energy off-road platform as both powerful and efficient. Stock Cars, Extreme Terrain: GWM's Factory Off-Roaders Hold Their Ground The Taklimakan Rally, recognized globally as a proving ground for endurance, draws elite teams with its unforgiving terrain and rigorous FIA standards. For GWM, the event is more than a competition—it's a bold assertion of technological independence. The brand's three flagship lines—HAVAL, GWM TANK, and POER—are all in the spotlight. Every participating vehicle, from the HAVAL MENGLONG (gasoline) and HAVAL H9 (diesel) to the GWM TANK300 Hi4-T, GWM TANK400 Hi4-T, GWM TANK500 Hi4-Z, and the POER V6, runs with factory-standard engines and transmissions, modified only for safety. No race-tuned upgrades, no compromises—what conquers the desert is exactly what customers can drive off the lot. Built to Last: GWM's Factory Engineering Faces the Desert Head-On 'We chose to compete in the T2 production class to further validate our production vehicles under extreme conditions,' said GWM CTO Nicole Wu. 'Our goal is to bring the same models designed for our users into the heart of the Taklimakan Rally.' Throughout the grueling 4,500-kilometer course, every component faces relentless testing—each shock absorbed by the suspension, every spike in engine temperature, every grain of sand in the drivetrain becomes proof of GWM's 'Intelligent Off-Road' capability. As the rally continues, GWM's message is unmistakable: reliability isn't engineered in laboratories—it's forged in the field. By pushing production vehicles through some of the planet's harshest terrain, GWM is redefining what 'Made in China' means—one sand-covered, stage-winning machine at a time.
