Real Madrid came close to being eliminated at home again by Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey but prevailed to reach its second final in three seasons on Tuesday.
Antonio Rüdiger scored the decisive goal in extra time at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to allow the Spanish powerhouse to advance 5-4 on aggregate score.
Five years ago, Sociedad had stunned the Bernabeu with a 4-3 victory in the quarterfinals that put the Basque Country club on track for the title that season.
"Sociedad played very well, it's always difficult against them," Rüdiger said. "But this is Real Madrid and we have to keep fighting until the end. We are in another final and we will win it."
Madrid will play the April 26 final in Seville against either Barcelona or Atletico Madrid, which play their second leg on Wednesday at Atletico's Metropolitano stadium. The teams drew 4-4 in Barcelona in the first match.
Madrid beat Osasuna to win its 20th Copa title in 2023. Sociedad won its third in 2020 when it beat Basque rival Athletic Bilbao.
Carlo Ancelotti's team had won the first leg 1-0 in February, but Sociedad took the second leg 4-3 after Mikel Oyarzabal's stoppage-time goal in regulation, when both teams scored twice after the 80th minute.
Rüdiger's extra-time goal came with a header off a corner kick taken by Arda Güler in the 115th.
The visitors had opened the scoring with Ander Barrenetxea in the 16th before Endrick equalized with a nice flick over Sociedad goalkeeper Álex Remiro in the 30th.
Sociedad moved ahead with an own-goal by David Alaba in the 72nd and Oyarzabal added to the lead in the 80th. Madrid rallied with Jude Bellingham in the 82nd and Aurélien Tchouaméni in the 86th.
Madrid was minutes away from advancing when Oyarzabal scored with a header three minutes into stoppage time to extend the match.

Ronaldo leads Portugal to Nations League final with first win over Germany in 25 years

by Naharnet Newsdesk 05 June 2025, 16:15 Cristiano Ronaldo has led Portugal to its first win over Germany in 25 years. The 40-year-old Ronaldo captained the team and scored his 137th international goal as Portugal came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 in Munich in their Nations League semifinal on Wednesday. It was Portugal's first win in Germany since a World Cup qualifier in Stuttgart in October 1985 — some six months after a future superstar was born in Madeira. On his record-extending 220th appearance, Ronaldo became the oldest player to ever score against Germany while ending his "curse." The former Real Madrid star lost each of the previous five games he'd played against Germany. Portugal hadn't beaten Germany since Sérgio Conceição scored a hat trick for a 3-0 victory at Euro 2000. On Wednesday, Conceição's son — 22-year-old Francisco Conceição — pulled Portugal level just five minutes after making his entrance with a brilliant long-range strike inside the far post after he surged past Robin Gosens like he wasn't there. Liverpool target Florian Wirtz had given Germany a 48th-minute lead with a perfectly placed header inside the right post, but Portugal coach Roberto Martínez made his changes count as he brought on Conceição and Champions League winner Vitinha among the substitutes. Vitinha excelled as Portugal finished the game in the ascendancy just four days after he helped Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League final against Inter Milan in the same stadium on Saturday. Germany needed goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen at his best to prevent the visitors from scoring any more. "When we're not at 100% then we can't compete with the top teams," said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, who was missing Jamal Musiala among others. PSG wing backs João Neves and Nuno Mendes both started for Portugal, while Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade started for his Germany debut and had the home team's best first-half chance saved by Diogo Costa. Conceição made his mark in the 63rd. Mendes gave Ronaldo a simple finish five minutes after that. "It could have been more," Mendes said. France plays Spain in Stuttgart on Thursday in the other semifinal, with Germany awaiting the loser to decide third place.

Messi back with Argentina, Ancelotti debuts with Brazil in South American World Cup

by Naharnet Newsdesk 04 June 2025, 15:06 Brazil's new coach Carlo Ancelotti is getting a little help from his old friend Casemiro as he prepares for his debut in South American World Cup qualifying at Ecuador. Meanwhile star Lionel Messi is expected to play Thursday for Argentina at Chile after a seven-month absence. Veteran midfielder Casemiro, who has had success with the Italian coach at Real Madrid, is likely to be a starter in a match Thursday that could ease the pressure on Brazil, currently in fourth position in the standings. A home win could also put Ecuador close to its berth in the World Cup. The 37-year Messi seems to be in shape to return for Argentina. His most recent game for the World Cup champions was in November 2024. A muscle injury prevented him from playing in the March doubleheader, in which Lionel Scaloni's team secured its spot to defend its title. Argentina leads the round-robin competition with 31 points in 14 matches. Ecuador (23), Uruguay (21), Brazil (21), Paraguay (21), and Colombia (20) could secure direct births this month. The seventh-place team, which will advance to an international playoff, could be Venezuela (15 points), Bolivia (14) or even Peru (10) and Chile (10). Also on Thursday, Paraguay will host Uruguay. Friday's matches are Colombia vs. Peru and Venezuela against Bolivia. Ancelotti keys on returning players Ancelotti has been very communicative with returning players Casemiro and striker Richarlison. Both players were in Brazil's starting lineup in the 15 minutes allowed for journalists to watch practice at the Corinthians training ground in Sao Paulo. Next week, Brazil will prepare at the same venue for the match against Paraguay. Raphinha, who is suspended for the game in Guayaquil, will return to the team next week. Defender Alexsandro, who also hopes to have his national team debut this month, said he was excited about Ancelotti's interest in long conversations with his players. The Italian is still learning Portuguese, but managed to get his message across in Spanish, the Lille player added. "I saw after our trainings he is very communicative, always asking questions, willing to know more, giving tips. That's important for us to grow, get all the experience and the achievements he has," Alexsandro said Tuesday. "We need to take this to the next few matches, qualify and get to the World Cup." Defender Marquinhos, who had his first training with Ancelotti on Tuesday after lifting the Champions League title with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, said Ancelotti's arrival will boost Brazil's chances to add a sixth star to its crest. "You can see that the arrival of our coach brings this energy for the start, it is about something new coming. This short run until the World Cup, having this energy, it will be very important," Marquinhos said. Messi returns among other new faces Messi's return will add to three new faces Argentina is expected to feature against Chile, if their first training session was an indication. Defenders Kevin Lomónaco (Independiente) and Mariano Troilo (Belgrano), and striker Franco Mastantuono, the 17-year-old River Plate targeted by major European clubs, are likely to get tested. Scaloni will have to decide who will replace defender Nicolás Otamendi, who is suspended for the match at the National Stadium in Santiago. His main options are Leonardo Balerdi and Facundo Medina. Suspensions and injuries will also force Argentina to change its midfield. Alexis Mac Allister was ruled out, while Enzo Fernández and Leandro Paredes are suspended. Frequent starter Rodrigo De Paul is expected to be joined by Giovanni Lo Celso and Exequiel Palacios.

Football law on penalty kicks updated after Champions League incident helped oust Atletico

by Naharnet Newsdesk 03 June 2025, 16:17 The laws of football on taking a penalty kick were clarified on Tuesday after Julián Álvarez's accidental double touch helped to eliminate Atletico Madrid from the Champions League. The update published by FIFA-backed rules panel IFAB means the kind of penalty Átletico forward Álvarez had disallowed after scoring in a shootout against Real Madrid in March should now be retaken. Álvarez slipped and kicked the ball against his standing left foot in the shootout in the Champions League round of 16. After the looping ball beat Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for an apparent score, the goal was ruled out by a video review and Atletico ultimately lost the shootout. The laws of football relating to the penalty kick and penalty shootout were seen as correctly applied in Madrid in March though too vaguely worded. The incident was widely judged to have been unfair as Álvarez did not deliberately slip and take the double touch to gain an advantage. "This situation is rare, and as it is not directly covered in Law 14, referees have understandably tended to penalize the kicker," IFAB said in a statement. "However, this part of Law 14 is primarily intended for situations where the penalty taker deliberately touches the ball a second time before it has touched another player." IFAB clarified in a circular letter to football stakeholders that a penalty kick which is scored now after an accidental double touch should be retaken. A double-touch penalty that is not scored will not be retaken. In a shootout, such a penalty "is recorded as missed," IFAB said, and during regulation time or extra time a free kick can be awarded to the defending team. The clarified rule will apply at the Club World Cup which starts on June 14 in the United States. The 32-team lineup includes Atletico. IFAB is comprised of FIFA plus the four British football federations. Rules can be changed with six of the eight votes which are distributed by four to FIFA and one each to the British.
