Nagelsmann: Ter Stegen to be Germany's number one in Nations league

Germany national coach Julian Nagelsmann takes part in a press conference, ahead of the UEFA Nations League semifinal soccer match against Portugal. Federico Gambarini/dpa Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said that Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be the starting goalkeeper in the Nations League Final Four on June 4-8. "Marc will be the number one, I've emphasized that many times. I'm very confident he'll play two top games," Nagelsmann said in a news conference on Friday. Advertisement Ter Stegen returned to the team after recovering from a serious knee injury, but it's unclear whether he will take the position between the posts. The Barcelona keeper was set to become Germany's number one after Manuel Neuer retired from the national team after last summer's Euro 2024. But the knee injury suffered in September opened the door for Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel. Baumann started both matches against Italy in March. On Wednesday, Germany face 2018-19 Nations League champions Portugal in the semi-finals at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The winner will face either 2020-21 champions France or title holders Spain. Advertisement "The Spanish team has realized how important the Nations League can be. It can be a mini-European championship," Nagelsman said about Spain, who won the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. The coach stressed that his goal is to win the Nations League title in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup. "Of course we want to win both games (semi-finals and final), we'd love to win the title. We want to boost our confidence. We want to get to the point where we can win titles – even if it's a small one," he said. Rüdiger in 'opportunityphase' after outburst Nagelsmann said that Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger knows that "the limit was reached" with his outburst during the Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona last month. Advertisement "He knows my opinion, that it's not good and that the limit was reached. He also knows that this can't happen again, otherwise there will be major consequences. We are very transparent," Nagelsmann said. Rüdiger was sent off for throwing an object at the referee and angrily reacting to a foul given against team-mate Kylian Mbappe shortly before the final whistle. Barcelona won the match 3-2. Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea said in his report that Rüdiger was dismissed for "throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me." The defender reportedly threw an ice cube at the official. Rüdiger has apologized for the incident. "At some point we have to accept the apology. He's in the opportunity phase now. That's over for me, too. I look forward to better behaviour in the future," Nagelsmann added.

Real Madrid handed major injury boost for Club World Cup

Fans of La Liga giants Real Madrid have this week been made aware of some altogether positive personnel news in the club's first-team squad. This comes amid confirmation on the part of Diario AS that Antonio Rüdiger is some way ahead of schedule in his recovery from injury. German international Rüdiger was of course forced under the knife late last month. This came owing to a chronic knee issue which had been plaguing the former Chelsea man throughout the 2024/25 campaign. Initially, the understanding, in turn, was that Rüdiger would not be seen in a competitive setting again until next season, making use of the summer to enjoy a full recovery. As alluded to above, though, if the latest word stemming from the media is anything to go by, then the all-action defender could be back on the pitch much sooner… As per a report from : 'The efforts and hours of meticulous gym work Rüdiger has been putting in since his surgery are bearing fruit. The expectation is that he'll be part of the group that travels to the Club World Cup. He might even be available for Xabi Alonso for the second group stage match, against Pachuca, on June 22.' Rüdiger eyes Real Madrid return at Club World Cup

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger is optimistic about returning to action at the upcoming Club World Cup, following his injury and a six-game suspension. "I think I'll be back for the Club World Cup," the 32-year-old said on Sunday. Advertisement The Club World Cup is scheduled to take place in the United States from June 14 to July 13. Rüdiger is currently recovering from meniscus surgery. His last match for Real was a tense Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona in late April, where he was handed a six-game ban by the Spanish FA after throwing an object at the referee. Due to the injury and limited recovery time, German national coach Julian Nagelsmann did not select Rüdiger for the Nations League Final Four in June. Meanwhile, Real Madrid confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach on Sunday. Alonso, 43, will take charge from June 1, in time for the Club World Cup. "Something new is good. He has done a good job and hopefully, he will do the same for us," Rüdiger said of the new coach.

Real Madrid defender Rüdiger gets 6-game ban for conduct toward referee

Associated Press MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger was handed a six-game ban Tuesday for his conduct toward a referee during the team's loss to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final. Rüdiger shouted at the referee and seemed to throw a small bag of ice during extra time in Madrid's 3-2 loss to Barcelona on Saturday. The disciplinary committee of the Spanish football federation said Rüdiger's ban was for 'minor violence' toward the officials. Another Madrid player, Lucas Vazquez, was handed a two-match suspension because of his protest toward the match officials. Rüdiger has since apologized for his behavior but the incident prompted former Germany player Dietmar Hamann to call Sunday for the defender to be left out of Germany's squad for the Nations League final four in June. The 32-year-old Rüdiger successfully underwent surgery on a meniscus tear in his left knee on Tuesday and will begin 'his recovery process shortly.' The club did not give a timeline for his return but the recovery is expected to take several weeks. Rüdiger said surgery was 'unavoidable' after playing through 'severe pain.' 'Now I'm finally pain-free again, and the surgery was a success,' he said on Instagram in a post that included photos of him in the hospital after the surgery, one in bed and another in a wheelchair while holding crutches. 'I want to be able to play again as soon as possible as two big tournaments with the Nations League and the Club World Cup are in front of me, but I have to look from week to week now and we will see. I will do everything I can to make it happen.' Germany plays Portugal in the Nations League semifinals in Munich on June 4. Madrid's first game at the Club World Cup in the United States is on June 18. ___ AP soccer: in this topic
