Nagelsmann: Ter Stegen to be Germany's number one in Nations league

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said that Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be the starting goalkeeper in the Nations League Final Four on June 4-8.
"Marc will be the number one, I've emphasized that many times. I'm very confident he'll play two top games," Nagelsmann said in a news conference on Friday.

Ter Stegen returned to the team after recovering from a serious knee injury, but it's unclear whether he will take the position between the posts.
The Barcelona keeper was set to become Germany's number one after Manuel Neuer retired from the national team after last summer's Euro 2024.
But the knee injury suffered in September opened the door for Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel. Baumann started both matches against Italy in March.
On Wednesday, Germany face 2018-19 Nations League champions Portugal in the semi-finals at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The winner will face either 2020-21 champions France or title holders Spain.

"The Spanish team has realized how important the Nations League can be. It can be a mini-European championship," Nagelsman said about Spain, who won the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.
The coach stressed that his goal is to win the Nations League title in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup.
"Of course we want to win both games (semi-finals and final), we'd love to win the title. We want to boost our confidence. We want to get to the point where we can win titles – even if it's a small one," he said.
Rüdiger in 'opportunityphase' after outburst
Nagelsmann said that Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger knows that "the limit was reached" with his outburst during the Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona last month.

"He knows my opinion, that it's not good and that the limit was reached. He also knows that this can't happen again, otherwise there will be major consequences. We are very transparent," Nagelsmann said.
Rüdiger was sent off for throwing an object at the referee and angrily reacting to a foul given against team-mate Kylian Mbappe shortly before the final whistle. Barcelona won the match 3-2.
Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea said in his report that Rüdiger was dismissed for "throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me." The defender reportedly threw an ice cube at the official.
Rüdiger has apologized for the incident.
"At some point we have to accept the apology. He's in the opportunity phase now. That's over for me, too. I look forward to better behaviour in the future," Nagelsmann added.

Lance Stroll out of Spanish GP, to undergo procedure after hand and wrist pain
Lance Stroll will not compete in the Spanish Grand Prix because of 'pain in his hand and wrist, which his medical consultant believes is in relation to the procedure he underwent in 2023,' Aston Martin announced late Saturday evening. According to the team, the 26-year-old has been suffering for six weeks, and Stroll 'will undergo a procedure to rectify these issues before focusing on his recovery.' The 2023 incident referenced is a cycling accident that required surgery. Advertisement No one can replace the Canadian driver because they did not compete in qualifying. Stroll qualified P14, while teammate Fernando Alonso is set to line up 10th for tomorrow's Spanish GP. Stroll was summoned to see the stewards after qualifying because he was delayed for the driver weigh-in. Drivers are required to be weighed immediately after completely qualifying, and according to FIA Formula One technical delegate Jo Bauer, Stroll 'stayed 5 minutes in the teams garage before proceeding to the scales and secondly he did not proceed through the pit-lane.' There was no outcome from the summons, as of the news breaking that the Aston Martin driver will not compete on Sunday. 'It's been a tough weekend for us so far – the car hasn't been easy to handle all weekend and it's been challenging to put clean laps together,' Stroll said in the team's post-qualifying recap, prior to Saturday evening's announcement. 'Nevertheless, we made it through to Q2 and we take any small wins we can get at the moment. We have lots of areas of the car that we need to look into and improve, but we'll see what we can do tomorrow starting from P14.' By Luke Smith This injury for Stroll dates back to preseason in 2023 when he crashed while cycling at a training camp, which put his participation in the opening races of that season in doubt. Stroll and his medical team completed a rapid turnaround to get him ready for the start of the season, including surgery overseen by Dr. Javier Mir, a specialist in the field who also deals with MotoGP riders' arm and hand injuries. He also oversaw Daniel Ricciardo's surgery when he broke his wrist at Zandvoort in 2023. Stroll raced through the pain in the early part of that season, albeit still struggling at points — even when he scored points in Bahrain in his first race back, he told reporters that 'broken bones still hurt.' But it's clear the issues have now got to a point that further action is required. His next steps and recovery will be crucial to ensure he is able to race pain-free in the future. Advertisement Because Stroll qualified the car, Aston Martin is not able to name a replacement driver for the race, meaning we'll be down to a 19-car field for Sunday's race. If Stroll is unable to race next time out in Canada in two weeks' time, Aston Martin would be able to call on the services of reserve driver Felipe Drugovich, who won the Formula Two title in 2022, and is the most likely replacement if required. Mexican sailors aboard doomed Navy ship that crashed into Brooklyn Bridge will set sail again — on different vessel
Crewmembers from the doomed Mexican navy boat that smashed into the Brooklyn Bridge are gearing up to set sail again — this time on a hulking tank landing vessel. Nearly two weeks after the deadly May 17 crash in the Big Apple, the surviving cadets will resume their training course Sunday aboard the 262-foot-long ARM Usumacinta, the Spanish news outlet El Gráfico reported. Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum and Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles are slated to give the order to cast off from the port of Veracruz during the country's Navy Day celebrations, the outlet said. 'The crew aboard our ARM Usumacinta (A-412) has sailed national and international waters, braving the seas to bring humanitarian aid and hope to those most in need in disaster situations and areas,' Mexico's Navy Ministry said in a statement. The powerful vessel — which took part in a multinational training mission organized by the US Navy's Third PacificFleet, RIMPAC2024, last summer — uses propulsion engines, a far cry from the ill-fated Cuauhtémoc, which relied on wind power to propel its 297-foot-long deck through the sea. The sailboat's three masts cracked and broke as they struck the 142-year-old Brooklyn Bridge during the Cuauhtémoc's departure from Manhattan, killing 23-year-old Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos and 20-year-old América Yamilet Sánchez, and injuring 19 others. There were 277 crew members aboard — including 213 men and 64 women — most of whom were cadets from the Heroica Escuela Naval Militar, the Mexican naval training academy in Veracruz. However, due to the Usumacinta's structural and operational differences, the vessel cannot follow the Cuauhtémoc's original route. The new itinerary — and whether all the crash survivors will be on board — wasn't immediately clear. In the wake of the wreck injured sailors were flown home to Veracruz for treatment at Antón Lizardo Naval Hospital, where they also underwent psychological evaluations, according to the Spanish news outlet La Razón. They were later granted a week-long reprieve from their navy obligations to visit family, a break that was 'fundamental' for their emotional recovery, Mexican navy sources told the outlet. The Brooklyn Bridge incident remains under investigation. The Cuauhtémoc remains docked at Pier 36 in Manhattan.
