The Lions might play top draft picks Tyleik Williams and Tate Ratledge vs. Falcons
Fans haven't seen the on-field debut of the Lions top two draft picks yet, but that might change in the preseason matchup with the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell indicated that first-round pick, DT Tyleik Williams, and second-round OL Tate Ratledge might be in the lineup. Neither suited up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame game loss to the Chargers. Before that game, Campbell had left the door open for Williams and Ratledge to appear against Atlanta.
"I'm thinking about that," Campbell responded before Wednesday morning's practice when asked if Williams and Ratledge would play. "I would like to get them going this game, but I'm not 100 percent set on that yet."
Williams has had an outstanding training camp, consistently disruptive in the middle of the defensive line while playing with the first-team defense. Ratledge has quickly taken over as Detroit's starting right guard after an early trial run at center.

Rashawn Slater tears patellar tendon: What's his timeline to return?
The Los Angeles Chargers were bracing for bad news when starting left tackle Rashawn Slater suffered a non-contact knee injury during Thursday's training camp. And come Thursday afternoon, the team's worst fears for Slater were realized. According to a statement from the Chargers, Slater suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. The two-time Pro Bowler will under go surgery and has already been ruled out for the entire 2025 season. But what is Slater's timeline to return looking like? With an injury like a patellar tendon tear, the road back could not be more difficult for an NFL player. Patellar tendon recovery time While torn ligaments like an ACL or MCL aren't the career-threatening injuries they once were, the same can't be said for a ruptured patellar tendon. It's a brutal, devastating injury that has potential career-ending implications. According to a study from Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine, an analysis of patellar tendon tears in NFL players between 2009 and 2023 painted a grim picture. From the study on return to play: The overall RTP for PT tears was 55.4% (31/56). For players with PT tears, 21.4% (12/56) returned to their prior performance level within 2 years, with 7 players doing so during the next season and 5 players doing so during the second post-injury season. Essentially, 45.6% of players with that injury never return to NFL action. And nearly 80% of players didn't return within two seasons. Every player is different, but Slater certainly faces a difficult road back after such a serious injury. He will miss the 2025 season and could reasonably be out for the 2026 season as well, if not longer.

EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 12: Rashawn Slater #70 of the Los Angeles Chargers blocks during mandatory minicamp at The Bolt on June 12, 2025 in El Segundo, news: Texans' CJ Gardner-Johnson Believed to Have Suffered Torn Achilles Slater signed a four-year, $114 million contract extension with the organization, which included $92 million in guaranteed money. The contract was signed on July 27. The $92 million guaranteed in the contract is the most ever given to an offensive lineman. Slater worked his way into a historic play with elite play that includes two Pro Bowl nods and a Second-team All-Pro nod. Slater was responsible not only for helping to protect quarterback Justin Herbert, but he was also instrumental in helping the run game. The Chargers relied on a run game that wore down opponents in 2024. What Will the Chargers Do Next? The Chargers have some solid offensive linemen on the team who may need to move over. With Joe Alt being the premier left tackle, he may move over to right tackle to make up for losing Slater. Ryan Nelson could be the presumed starting left tackle. Trey Pipkins III might also remain as the team's starting right tackle, leaving Alt to remain on the left side. It would be believed that the Chargers would look into signing some veteran backups, as losing Slater is a massive issue that could affect the team down the line. There are plenty of available free agent offensive linemen that the Chargers could target, or they may wait until teams start trimming their rosters to 53 following the conclusion of training camp, leading to some quality players looking for their next team. The good news is that Slater has $92 million guaranteed on his contract, so he is good for the future, considering the injury and the tough rehab to make it back. The bad news is the Chargers are now at a massive loss. For more on the Chargers and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

Severity of Chargers OT Rashawn Slater's injury revealed
Chargers offensive tackle Rashawn Slater has been diagnosed with a ruptured patellar tendon. Slater is now out for the season and will require surgery. Slater will miss the 2025 season and be placed on Injured Reserve. He suffered the injury during Thursday's practice. The devastating injury comes weeks after Slater signed a four-year, $113 million extension that made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL. The Chargers are likely to now turn to their Trey Pipkins III to fill in as the other starter opposite Joe Alt, who is capable of moving to left tackle. Pipkins, who was the starting right guard in 2024, started at tackle for most of his pro career before the move inside.
