Detroit Red Wings legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Alex Delvecchio dies at 93

DETROIT — Alex Delvecchio, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame who helped the Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup three times in the 1950s, has died. He was 93. Delvecchio died at his home in Rochester, Michigan, according to a Red Wings spokesperson. A cause of death was not immediately available, though his family said in a statement released by the team that Delvecchio died peacefully Tuesday surrounded by loved ones. 'Alex was more than a hockey icon. He was a devoted husband, loving father, great grandfather, cherished friend and respected teammate to so many,' the family said. 'While the world knew him as an incredible hockey player with numerous accomplishments on the ice, we knew him as someone whose humility, strength, competitiveness, kindness and heart were even greater than his knew achievements.' Delvecchio spent his entire NHL career with the Red Wings from 1951-73, recording 1,325 points in 1,671 regular-season and playoff games. Playing alongside 'Mr. Hockey' Gordie Howe, he was part of championship teams in 1952, '54 and '55, won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct three times and was a two-time All-Star. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977, Delvecchio decades later was named one of the 100 greatest players in league history. During the '70s he had multiple stints as Detroit's general manager, head coach or both. Delvecchio remains third in franchise history in games played behind Howe and Nicklas Lidstrom. His No. 10 hangs from the rafters as one of the storied organization's retired numbers. 'Few athletes in any sport ever have been as synonymous with one franchise as Alex Delvecchio was with the Detroit Red Wings,' NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. 'Delvecchio's work as the center on the famed 'Production Line' with wingers Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay was pivotal to the Wings' title runs in 1952, 1954 and 1955, and he served as team captain for 12 years. The National Hockey League mourns the passing of this true legend of the game.'

Nikolaj Ehlers remains unsigned going into Day 2 of NHL free agency

Associated Press Nikolaj Ehlers could choose his destination as soon as Wednesday after letting the start of NHL free agency pass without signing a contract. Ehlers became one of the rare top players available not to sign on the first day of free agency, opting instead to sit back and consider his options. Carolina, Tampa Bay and Washington were considered among the teams interested in pursuing the 29-year-old from Denmark who played his first nine seasons with Winnipeg. 'We've had talks with his agent," Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said. 'He's taking his time to field offers. He's obviously a very popular person right now, and we're waiting to see where that goes.' Ehlers and his camp watched Tuesday as fellow winger Brock Boeser re-signed in Vancouver for just over $50 million and older forward Mikael Granlund got $7 million annually from Anaheim. With the salary cap increasing a record amount to $95.5 million and a lack of high-end talent available, Ehlers could sign the most lucrative contract among players changing teams this summer. Ehlers going unsigned is almost certainly holding things up for players like Anthony Beauvillier and Jeff Skinner, who could be part of a Plan B or C for those who don't land their first choice. Andrew Mangiapane signed with back-to-back defending Western Conference champion Edmonton on a two-year deal worth $7.2 million late Tuesday night. Defensemen Dmitry Orlov, Brent Burns and Matt Grzelcyk, forwards Jack Roslovic and Mason Appleton and goaltenders Ilya Samsonov and Alexandar Georgiev are also still available. 'Day 1 is always a little bit hectic and crazy,' said San Jose GM Mike Grier, who made multiple moves but still needs to spend more to get to the salary floor. 'We'll kind of see how things shake out. After (Tuesday night), things will settle down and teams will kind of regroup and see what's out there and the free agents will do the same.' ___ AP Sports Writer Aaron Beard in Raleigh, North Carolina, contributed to this report. ___ AP NHL: recommended

Chargers describe Ladd McConkey's record-setting rookie season in 4 words

The Los Angeles Chargers hit on second-round 2024 NFL draft pick Ladd McConkey. As a rookie, McConkey broke all sorts of team records for Los Angeles. The former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver became the Los Angeles Chargers' all-time leading rookie receiver in receptions and receiving yards. He finished the 2024 season with a team-best 82 receptions for 1,149 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. McConkey had the 10th-most receiving yards and 19th-most receptions of any NFL player. He helped Los Angeles go 11-6 McConkey's record setting season continued in the playoffs. Los Angeles fell to the Houston Texans in an ugly 32-12 loss, but McConkey set the NFL rookie receiving yardage record (for an individual playoff game) with 197 receiving yards, nine receptions, and one touchdown. "A damn good one," said the Chargers on social media when describing Ladd McConkey's rookie season. McConkey is already drawing recognition across the NFL. The league ranked him as the No. 100 best player in the NFL for his 2024 season. McConkey and the Chargers start training camp on July 17. McConkey should have an even better sophomore campaign in the NFL. The Chargers' regular season opener will be played in Brazil against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. ET.
