Odisha Police arrest Maoist leader Kunjam Hidma in Koraput
According to an official release, based on credible intelligence regarding the movement of a group of banned CPI (Maoist) cadres in the forest area near the village Petguda under Boipariguda Police Station, a special operation was launched by the District Police using the district voluntary force (DVF) on the night of May 28.
In the early hours of May 29, the DVF team noticed a group of Maoists camping on the hill. As the team moved to surround it, the Maoists, on being alerted, opened fire at the DVF team and fled into the jungle. In response, the team exercised controlled fire in self-defence.
During the subsequent search, one Maoist cadre, Kunjam Hidma, was apprehended while attempting to hide in the nearby bushes, and others managed to flee, said the officials.
According to the officials, Hidma joined the Maoist organisation in 2007 at 14, as he was inducted into Bal Sangham and Jana Natya Mandali (JNM), the cultural wing of the Maoists.
From 2007 to 2013, he remained associated with Bal Sangham and JNM. Between 2013 and 2015, he worked as a party member under the Usur Local Organisation Squad (LOS) and received military training, during which he was issued a single-shot rifle.
In 2016, he started operating in the AOB (Andhra Odisha Border) platoon, and later in 2019, he was promoted to the rank of ACM (Area Committee Member) and provided with an SLR rifle. He served in a military platoon under Suresh (SZCM), operating in the Bolpariguda area of Koraput district, the cut-off area of Malkangiri district (Odisha), and the Pedabailu region of ASR district (Andhra Pradesh).
During 2021-2022, he was assigned to AOB Platoon Section-01, operating in the Pamed area of Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh.
In 2023, he was transferred to Platoon-24 in the Kerlapal area under Sukma district, and in 2024, temporarily moved to Platoon-26, operating in the Malengiri area of Sukma.
He returned to the AOB unit in May 2025 and has been active since then. Under the leadership of Suresh (SZCM) in the AOB team, he operated as an ACM in the South Bastar and Kerlapal areas of Chhattisgarh, said officials.
Officials said Hidma was involved in several encounters with police and had Maoist-related cases against him in Odisha's Koraput and Malkangiri districts as well as in Chhattisgarh. (ANI)

Prohibitory orders likely ahead of PUCSC polls amid rising student violence
1 2 3 4 Chandigarh: With Panjab University likely to hold its PU Campus Students' Council (PUCSC) elections on Sept 4 or 5, the administration has started security preparations much earlier than usual. A meeting between the university and police officials, including the senior superintendent of police, is scheduled for Wednesday to discuss the imposition of prohibitory orders around Aug 15 — a first for PU student elections. The move comes amid concerns over rising student violence on and off campus. Nearly 100 police personnel have already been deployed for security, with three permanent checkpoints established near the Administrative Block, Ankur School, and University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS). Police are checking vehicles, enforcing barricading, and monitoring student movement to restrict entry of outsiders. "This time, deployment is not symbolic. We are actively checking for weapons and other suspicious items, especially during evening hours," said a senior police officer posted on campus. The strict measures follow a series of violent clashes involving student groups in PU and other city colleges. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Just a few days back, two FIRs were registered after rival groups clashed at GGDSD College in Sector 32. On April 28, SOPU factions fought at the PU Student Centre. On April 8, the Dalal camp and Joint Action Committee (JAC) clashed outside Boys Hostel No. 4. On March 28, PU student Aditya Thakur was murdered during a fest on the Sector 25 campus. In another case, on March 22, PUCSC joint secretary and others were booked following an ABVP-related brawl in Sector 15. Vice-chancellor Prof Renu Vig confirmed that the university has called the police meeting to finalise steps for ensuring peace. "Various student organisations have multiple factions and hence infighting. The past six months have seen many student groups clashing with each other," she said. PU authorities have also scheduled a meeting with all student parties for Tuesday. Dean student welfare Prof Amit Chauhan said the administration will also meet student leaders. "The aim is to ensure a peaceful environment during elections. We are concerned about outsider involvement and are considering all options, including prohibitory orders, though the matter is yet to be finalised," he said. Sources said the university is also planning stricter controls on vehicle entry and increased surveillance over the next few weeks. Security staff have been instructed to assist police in enforcing discipline across the campus. Police officials said that some student groups are being monitored for alleged connections to gangsters. "We are keeping tabs on movement, contacts, and past involvement of some leaders with criminal elements. This time we are taking proactive steps," said a police officer. With campaigning expected to begin in mid-August, university authorities say maintaining order is the top priority and students will have to operate within strict boundaries. 4 dists in southern belt report violence-free Martyrs' Week
Koraput: The Maoist-sponsored Martyrs' Week ended on Sunday without any incidence of violence being reported in the rebel-hit districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri, police said. DIG (south-western range) Kanwar Vishal Singh said that no untoward incident was reported throughout the week. "Presently, the situation is under control. However, we cannot afford to be complacent. Security forces remain on high alert to deal with any Maoist threat," he added. Celebrated annually from July 28 to August 3 by the outlawed CPI (Maoist), Martyrs Week commemorates the death of Naxalite ideologue Charu Majumdar, who died in police custody on July 28, 1972. The period is typically marked by a spike in Maoist propaganda activities, including the erection of temporary martyr pillars, cultural programmes in remote forested areas and public addresses promoting the group's ideology, particularly in tribal regions. To counter any Maoist activity, extensive security arrangements were made across the four districts, with particular focus on areas bordering Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo In Malkangiri, considered one of the worst Maoist-affected districts, SP Vinod Patil said that all police stations were on high alert, with additional forces deployed to sensitive areas. Koraput and Nabarangpur also witnessed intensified patrolling, especially in regions close to the Chhattisgarh border. "The northern part of Nabarangpur remains a focus area for us and extra deployment has been made to thwart any Maoist movement," Singh added. Though no Maoist posters or banners related to the observance were found this year, police said that vehicles entering the region were thoroughly frisked throughout the week to prevent infiltration or arms movement. Police said that surveillance and anti-Maoist operations would continue even after the culmination of Martyrs Week. Round-the-clock monitoring and coordinated action will remain in force to ensure lasting peace in the region, the DIG said. On Sunday, a landmine explosion allegedly triggered by Maoists killed one railway employee and wounded another while they were conducting track inspection in Sundargarh district, along the Odisha-Jharkhand border, police said. Posters were recovered near the damaged track with Maoists claiming responsibility for the attack.
