Explosives unearthed in Kandhamal; Maoists' plot foiled

Bhubaneswar: Ina major breakthrough for anti-Maoist operations in Odisha, security forces uncovered a substantial cache of explosives and tactical equipment during a combing operation in Kandhamal district. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a team from the District Voluntary Force (DVF) discovered the Maoist dump deep within Guma reserved forest near Sinahibali village, under the jurisdiction of Belgarh police station, police said. The recovered materials include 564 electrical detonators, 77 non-electrical detonators, four remote controls, two electrical sensors, two battery inputs, one electrical switch, a steel drum with cover and a steel tiffin carrier. Officials believe the cache was intended for use in ambushes targeting security personnel engaged in patrol and combing operations in the region. Kandhamal SP Harish B C confirmed that the operation was carried out with maximum caution, involving a bomb disposal squad that first sanitised the area for booby traps and pressure bombs before unearthing the dump. The forested terrain of Kandhamal, known for its dense cover and strategic value to Maoist insurgents, has long posed challenges to law enforcement agencies. However, recent operations have intensified surveillance and combing efforts, leading to a series of successful recoveries. This latest seizure follows a string of anti-Maoist actions in the region. On June 30, two senior Maoist leaders from Chhattisgarh were gunned down in an encounter in Pushungia forest under Baliguda police limits. A separate operation earlier this month yielded rifles, revolvers, cartridges and communication devices from a Maoist camp. Sources within the security establishment said the recovered detonators and remote devices were likely part of a larger plan to disrupt ongoing counter-insurgency efforts. With Maoist activity reportedly spilling over from Chhattisgarh into Odisha's forests, Kandhamal has become a focal point for coordinated operations aimed at dismantling insurgent infrastructure. Authorities have launched a follow-up investigation to trace the origin of the explosives and identify any remaining Maoist operatives in the vicinity. The success of the DVF team underscores the growing effectiveness of Odisha's anti-Naxal strategy, combining intelligence-led operations with tactical precision. As combing operations continue, officials remain vigilant against further threats in the region.

Maoist camp busted in Odisha's Nuapada, explosives seized

NUAPADA: In a joint anti-Maoist operation, the district voluntary force (DVF) of Nuapada on Monday unearthed and dismantled a Maoist camp in Narayan Dongar reserve forest within Sinapali police limits here. Nuapada SP Gundala Reddy Raghavendra said on Tuesday the camp was located near the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border and appeared to have been recently abandoned by the Maoist cadres. 'Basing on reliable intelligence inputs, we carried out search in the area and recovered several explosive materials like one tiffin improvised explosive device (IED), 20 gelatin sticks, an electric detonator, connecting wires, a torchlight, polythene sheets and other camp-related materials,' he added. The SP further pointed out that the seizure of the tiffin IED and other explosives suggests that the Maoist group was likely planning violent activities targeting security personnel or civilians. 'The timely operation by the DVF has averted any such potential threat. Security forces have intensified combing and area domination operations in and around the region to trace the movement of Naxal elements and ensure the safety of the local population,' he said. The joint operations are being carried out regularly in the border areas in coordination with the Special Operations Group (SOG) and CRPF to keep the region secure, the SP informed. On May 15, security forces had uncovered a Maoist camp within the protected forest near Gatibeda in the Sunabeda wildlife sanctuary in Komna area.

Maoist camp found in Nuapada forest

1 2 3 4 Bhubaneswar: Personnel of district voluntary force (DVF) unearthed a Maoist camp in Narayan Dongar reserve forest in Nuapada on Tuesday. A thorough search of the site led to the recovery of a Tiffin IED, 20 gelatin sticks, an electric detonator, connecting wires, torchlight, polythene sheets and other items, said Gundala Reddy Raghavendra, SP of Nuapada. The recovery of the tiffin IED and other articles indicates that the Maoists were attempting to carry out violent activities targeting security forces or civilians. The timely operation has successfully foiled any such nefarious plans, read a Nuapada police statement. The SP said, "Based on intelligence inputs, we had launched the DVF operation to identify Naxal camps. They were about to do a big explosion; however, we successfully foiled them. The home minister has given us a target to make India Naxal-free by March 2026." Security forces have intensified search and area domination operations in the area to track Maoists and to ensure the safety of nearby villages.

Odisha police guns down two Maoists in Kandhamal forest

BERHAMPUR/PHULBANI: Odisha Police gunned down two Maoists in Kandhamal district and seized arms and ammunition from their camp on Monday. The deceased were identified as Manku and Chandan, both natives of neighbouring Chhattisgarh and members of Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division of the banned CPI-Maoist outfit. Apart from recovering the bodies of the two ultras, security forces seized a rifle, revolvers, cartridges, walkie-talkie sets, batteries and other items from the encounter site, informed Kandhamal SP Harisha BC. The SP said acting on a tip-off about presence of Maoists in Puranjiba reserve forest within Baliguda police limits along Kandhamal-Kalahandi border, a combing operation was launched by the district voluntary force (DVF) and SOG jawans since the last two days. 'Around noon today, there was a gunfight between security forces and Maoists. The ultras opened fire on spotting the security personnel, prompting retaliation. In the ensuing exchange of fire, the two Maoists were eliminated,' he said. Manku worked as an area committee member (ACM) in the KKBN division. Chandan was a member of the banned outfit operating in Kandhamal district. Security forces have intensified combing operation to ensure that no other Maoists are present in the area, the SP added. Following the encounter, DGP YB Khurania congratulated the Kandhamal SP and the DVF team on the success. Sources said with the anti-Naxal operation being intensified in Chhattisgarh, the Maoists are reportedly sneaking into the forests of Odisha. Kandhamal with its dense forests is proving to be a safe haven for the ultras. However, their activities have been curtailed due to incessant rains in the region since the last one week. In 2024, security forces killed six Maoists and arrested another eight ultras in Odisha. Similarly, 24 Maoists laid down their arms last year.
