German train derailment 'caused by landslide'

BreakingNews.ie3 days ago
Investigators believe a landslide brought on by heavy rainfall likely caused a regional train to derail in southern Germany, killing three people and injuring 41 more.
More than 100 people were aboard the Deutsche Bahn train when at least two carriages derailed on Sunday evening in a forested area near Riedlingen, about 98 miles west of Munich.

The train's 32-year-old driver, a 36-year-old apprentice and a 70-year-old passenger were killed, police said on Monday.

Some of the 41 injured were seriously hurt.
Police said the downpours in the area caused a sewage shaft to overflow, likely triggering the landslide of an embankment where the derailment occurred.
There was no evidence of an external influence that could have caused the derailment, police said.

Photos from the scene showed parts of the train on its side as rescuers climbed atop the carriages.
'Such pictures shake us to the core,' Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz said on Monday, offering his condolences to the victims' families.
He pledged full support for the effort to clear up the cause.

David Ellis on Lil' Nashville: Line dancing? In Chiswick? It's a hoot

It operates more as a bar than a restaurant: huge glasses of wine for about £11 a go, picklebacks at a fiver, their own-branded beer (authentically American; ie, its only flavour is 'cold'). But the food is far better than required. Contrary to the menu's suggestion of starters and mains, everything arrived together, which I mention only as portions here are likewise authentically American, ie, bloody massive. At the end of an alarming amount of pulled meat — why must this be the only hallmark of Southern food? — half a meal remained on the red-lipped enamel trays. It is not food to over-analyse: tater tots buried under both pulled pork and beef brisket, the shredded meat piled like kindling, waterlogged with barbecue sauce. Or crisp battered Nashville chicken tenders, served authentically but baffingly on a slice of cheap white bread, with slices of pickles and a sauce as hot as is wanted. Particularly good fries, too; even better stuffed in with the brisket burger. Much of the menu replicates itself with paltry disguises, but is in essence party food done well. It will fuel a night stomping and turning and pausing only for beers. I left cradling my stomach unsteadily, all that brisket having shifted my centre of gravity.

Boeing Dreamliner flight forced to land moments after take-off due to mechanical issue

A United Airlines Boeing 787-8 flight was forced to return to Washington Dulles airport shortly after take-off following a mechanical issue. The Munich -bound flight UA108 took off at 5.40pm local time on Friday 25 July, only to initiate emergency protocols moments later. Flightradar24 footage shows the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner circling northwest of the airport before returning safely to the ground. Pilots and air traffic controllers remained in close contact to ensure the plane's safe return to Washington Dulles airport. In a statement to The Independent, United Airlines confirmed the flight returned to ground shortly after take-off 'to address a mechanical issue'. It added that the plane landed safely and all 219 passengers and 11 crew members deplaned as normal at the gate. 'The flight was subsequently cancelled, and we arranged alternate travel arrangements to take customers to their destination as soon as possible,' it added. When pressed on the specific nature of the mechanical issue and whether an investigation would be forthcoming, United declined to respond. A spokesperson from Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) also confirmed that the aircraft returned after 'reporting a mechanical issue'. They added: 'The plane landed safely, was checked by Airports Authority Fire and Rescue personnel then towed to a gate. 'There was no disruption to other flights.' The news comes as Boeing faces renewed scrutiny following the recent Air India crash in Ahmedabad, where the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner experienced a severe engine malfunction soon after take-off. The incident saw the London-bound flight plummet to the ground just minutes after taking off and killing all but one of the 242 people onboard, along with several others inside the buildings struck by the aircraft. Official investigations as to the exact cause of the tragedy are currently underway. While speculation continues, India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has urged caution until the final report is published, which is expected within a year.

Dear Richard Madeley: My otherwise lovely neighbour is playing fast and loose with my lawnmower

Dear Richard, For the second time this year, I've lent my lawnmower to my next-door neighbour, only to have to remind him to give it back, and to find on receiving it that he hasn't topped up the petrol. Perhaps he thinks it runs on magic beans. To make matters worse, this time, one of the blades was chipped. I don't want to be 'that guy' but I am feeling miffed. I didn't perform a close inspection of the mower when he brought it back so didn't notice or mention these issues then – is it too late to do so now? And should I just withhold it in future, or stipulate conditions? I'm mortified by awkward exchanges at the best of times; plus this guy is in other respects an exemplary neighbour – friendly, minds his own business, takes in deliveries, waters the garden when we're away, and so on. What's the best way to deal with this? – G, Surrey Dear G, If you're proposing risking falling out with a good, reliable, helpful neighbour over a few tablespoons of petrol and a chipped lawnmower blade (which you may have been the one to damage), then frankly you need your head examining. The value of good neighbourly relations is beyond rubies. Have you ever lived next door to someone with whom you've had a falling out, G? Talk to someone who has. It can poison daily life beyond recovery. As I wrote here only last week, it's worth performing back-handsprings through hoops to stay on good terms with the folks next door. Right, let's sweep up this hill of beans. First, the chipped blade. As you yourself say, you didn't inspect the machine when it was returned, so how do you know you haven't damaged it since? Or, assuming you didn't cast your eagle eye over the thing prior to lending it to this guy, that it wasn't already chipped? Answer: you don't. So drop it. Now, the fuel. I don't use a petrol mower but I just checked and the ones you push around burn about half a litre per hour. The bigger things you ride use about a litre. That's roughly 67 pence worth for the first, under £1.50 for the second. G, G, G. Come on. Are you really going to present this bloke with a bill for 67p? How would you feel if he made a storage charge for the parcels he takes in for you when you're away? And yes, it must be irritating if you can't use it until you've filled it up, but unless you're riding it to the petrol station and back surely you have some petrol in the shed or garage, and it's just a matter of topping it up? I have one word for you, G: perspective. I strongly recommend you get some.
