Shohei Ohtani hit into a triple play, then hit a homer in Dodgers loss
The third triple play of the 2025 season was the Angels' first triple play since Aug. 18, 2023 and the eighth in franchise history.
With the score tied at 5-5 entering the ninth inning, Ohtani led off the inning with a home run off of Angels closer (and former Dodger) Kenley Jansen. Ohtani has hit home runs in four consecutive games.
The Dodgers called on Alex Vesia to close out the game, but a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Nolan Schanuel scored Luis Rengifo to tie up the game. The Angels held the Dodgers scoreless in the top of the 10th inning, and then won the game when Jo Adell's single scored the "ghost runner" Taylor Ward.
Ohtani takes the mound Wednesday as the Dodgers will look to avoid a series sweep against the Angels. A three-game losing streak by the Dodgers has allowed the San Diego Padres to move into a first-place tie atop the NL West. The Dodgers host the Padres for a three-game series this weekend.

August 17 - The Los Angeles Dodgers have dealt with plenty of injuries this season, along with stretches on the schedule with play below expectations, and yet something about the San Diego Padres brings out the best in the World Series champions. The Dodgers will try for a three-game sweep of their Southern California rivals when they host the Padres on Sunday. After they held on for a 3-2 victory on Friday, the Dodgers turned six walks issued by Dylan Cease over the first two innings into a 6-0 victory over the Padres on Saturday, while regaining sole possession of first place in the National League West. "Obviously wins are great. We're going to sleep well tonight, be ready to (sweep) tomorrow," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "I'm just happy that we're playing better baseball. It just seems like we're playing clean baseball. We're minimizing the walks, taking walks, not making outs on the bases, and converting outs when we need to." In Sunday's series finale, Los Angeles is set to send right-hander Tyler Glasnow to the mound. Glasnow (1-1, 3.08 ERA) has not won any of his past 10 starts and yet has a 2.34 ERA over his past six outings and has averaged 7.5 strikeouts over his last four. In six career appearances (three starts) against the Padres, he is 0-0 with a 2.63 ERA. The Dodgers' offense scored five times in the first two innings Saturday and did it on just one hit. At the same time, the Dodgers recorded three of their first four outs on defense when catcher Will Smith threw out Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts trying to steal second base. The Dodgers are now 7-2 against the Padres this season and have a chance at the sweep after entering the series with a 10-14 record since the All-Star break. The Padres will counter with right-hander Yu Darvish (2-3, 5.61), a former Dodger who has made just seven season starts because of right elbow inflammation. Darvish is 5-5 over 15 career starts against Los Angeles, with a 2.27 ERA. Darvish had a 1.72 ERA against the Dodgers in three regular-season starts last season then went 1-1 in a pair of playoff appearances, while allowing three runs over 13 2/3 total innings. After the Padres entered the series with manager Mike Shildt praising his team's relentless offense, the Padres have scored two total runs in two games after they averaged 6.2 runs in five consecutive victories before the series. On Saturday, San Diego had six hits to five for Los Angeles and lost by six runs. "Listen, that was an odd game," Shildt said, when asked about three base stealers thrown out in the first two innings. "We had a plan, and they made some plays. And when you're down, it hurts a little bit more. But you know, it's an odd game when you outhit a team and lose 6-0." August 17 - The Los Angeles Dodgers turned six walks in the first two innings into five runs and moved back into sole possession of first place in the National League West with a 6-0 victory over the visiting San Diego Padres on Saturday. Left-hander Blake Snell (3-1) went six scoreless innings against his former club as the Dodgers won consecutive games following a four-game losing streak. Los Angeles has not won three consecutive since a four-game winning streak June 29-July 3. Dylan Cease (5-11) struggled with his command as the Padres right-hander gave up five runs (three earned) in 3 1/3 innings. San Diego center fielder Jackson Merrill dropped a fly ball at the warning track with two outs in the second inning that led to the two unearned runs for the Dodgers. San Diego, which moved into sole possession of first place earlier in the week, has lost seven times in nine games against the Dodgers this season. The Dodgers took advantage of a wild Cease from the outset. Shoei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Will Smith walked in succession to open the bottom of the first. Teoscar Hernandez had a sacrifice fly for a run and Michael Conforto added a two-run single. Ohtani and Smith also walked in the second inning then scored for a 5-0 lead when Merrill dropped Freddie Freeman's fly ball to the warning track in right-center. Los Angeles moved in front 6-0 in the fifth inning when Hernandez hit a home run to center off right-hander David Morgan, his 20th of the season. Hernandez has 20 home runs in each of the last seven full seasons, not counting the shortened 2020 pandemic campaign. In his first appearance against the Padres since winning a National League Cy Young Award with them in 2023, Snell gave up five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Dodgers' Blake Snell takes aim at former club in clash vs. Padres
August 16 - Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Blake Snell will come face to face with some old friends when he takes the mound at home Saturday night against the San Diego Padres. The Dodgers earned a 3-2 victory in the series opener Friday to end a four-game losing streak and create a first-place tie in the National League West. Los Angeles has a 6-2 advantage in the season series. The Dodgers won without third baseman Max Muncy, who went back on the injured list with an oblique strain. Snell will face his former club for the first time since he won the NL Cy Young Award with the Padres in 2023. Since departing, he has gone through a pair of injury-plagued seasons, first with the San Francisco Giants and now with the Dodgers. Snell (2-1, 2.37 ERA) made two early-season starts for Los Angeles, went on the injured list with shoulder inflammation and has made two starts since returning. He earned the victory against the Toronto Blue Jays last Saturday when he went five scoreless innings with a season-high 10 strikeouts. The Dodgers won 9-1. Snell has 18 strikeouts in his two most recent starts as he looks to match the high level he showed last season with the Giants after he returned from adductor and groin injuries in July. Dodgers outfielder Michael Conforto played with Snell in San Francisco last season -- when Snell finished 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA -- and can see a similar scenario unfolding. "When Blake's on, he's really, really tough to hit. As tough as anybody," Conforto said, according to The Orange County Register. "It's pretty close to what we were seeing last year when he was really, really dominant. A lot of swing-and-miss stuff." Snell has faced the Padres once, in 2016 as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays. He gave up one run over five innings while earning the win. He was able to watch another left-hander dominate Friday as Clayton Kershaw gave up one run over six innings as the Dodgers earned a much-needed victory amid an 11-14 record in the season's second half. Even with the loss on Friday, the Padres are 14-4 since July 26. They recovered from a nine-game deficit to the Dodgers on July 3 to move into sole possession of the division lead Wednesday. On Saturday, San Diego is set to send right-hander Dylan Cease (5-10, 4.52 ERA) to the mound. Cease is 2-2 with a 3.31 ERA in six career starts against the Dodgers, including back-to-back outings in June when he went seven scoreless innings in the first start and then was rocked for six runs in five frames in the second. He combined for 20 strikeouts in the two outings. San Diego had averaged 5.8 runs over its previous eight games before scoring just twice on Friday. The Padres' loss to the Dodgers in the series opener came at the start of a decisive stretch that includes six games between the teams in 10 days. "Because it's head-to-head, it has more significance," Padres manager Mike Shildt said. "The reality is that we got here by putting emphasis on every day being the most important day of the season, and that's not going to change from my seat." Ramon Laureano hit a home run for San Diego on Friday, his third in 13 games since arriving from the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline last month.
