Where We Are Going Today: Uncle Majid Restaurant in Jeddah
It was my day off and I wanted to treat our family helper, Angelyn, for her kind efforts and dedication with a dinner that would make her feel at home, so we ordered in a few must-try items from Uncle Majid recommended by her.
We started with one of the most popular items on the menu, sinigang na hipon, a classic Filipino sour soup with shrimp as the main ingredient.
I was surprised by the generous portion, which could easily serve five people, and the aroma was incredibly inviting.
The soup was loaded with fresh jumbo shrimp and vegetables like water spinach, tomato, white radish, green chili, onion, and eggplant, which had all been simmered in a tangy tamarind broth.
The flavor was well balanced and it reminded me of Chinese tom yum. The taste and portion made the SR92 ($24.53) price tag worthwhile.
Next, we tried chicken inasal, a famous grilled dish marinated in a blend of spices.
Honestly, it was one of the best grilled chickens I have had, and I even ate the skin, which I usually do not do. It was crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside.
No Filipino feast is complete without pancit, a flavorful white noodle dish stir-fried with spices, garlic, carrots, cabbage, onion, chicken, and seafood.
One bite took me back to my childhood and memories of my nanny who used to prepare a similar noodle dish for us at home.
To ensure I had something familiar to fall back on, I also ordered bistek Tagalog, a comforting dish of shredded tender beef in a savory onion and soy-lemon sauce, served with white rice.
Often referred to as Filipino steak, it was simple yet satisfying, a warm, cozy dish perfect for a relaxed evening at home.
The total bill was SR250, which I found fair, especially given the portion sizes were enough to serve more than three people.
The food arrived hot and fresh, and the menu features a wide range of authentic mains, salads, desserts, and drinks.
The restaurant branch in Jeddah is located in Al-Faisaliyyah, which can affect delivery times.

Saudi craftsman creates inclusive artwork by adding Braille to decorative plaque
MAKKAH: Craftsman Adel Al-Shehri has created a unique decorative plaque inspired by Saudi heritage and embossed with Braille writing. His creation honors Saudi culture and embraces the concept of inclusivity, driven by a conviction that the decorative piece should be accessible to all, including the visually impaired. The plaque, titled 'My Heritage in Braille,' is designed in a traditional style that reflects the deep-rooted culture of Saudi Arabia. It features a globe in its center surrounded by artistic motifs reflecting the concepts of universality. In an interview with Arab News, Al-Shehri spoke about the inspiration behind his selected materials and design choices. He crafted the plaque from luxurious walnut and mahogany woods, prized for their durability and rich, elegant grain. It wasn't easy, but through countless experiments and careful refinements, I achieved a delicate balance between tactile clarity and visual elegance. The plaque's base features a stepped circular design, inspired by the shape of ancient terraces found in historical buildings in the Kingdom. Incorporating Braille into the design proved to be a challenge for the craftsman. The reading system, which features raised dots that are read by touch, is not easy to recreate on materials like wood and metal. Braille is usually printed on paper, but adding it to a solid surface requires extreme precision. Al-Shehri devised a special method to achieve this, using engraving tools that enabled him to shape the Braille dots to the appropriate height (between 0.9 mm and 1.4 mm), while maintaining precise geometric spacing between the dots. This allowed them to be read by touch without losing their meaning or interfering with the other decorative elements on the plaque. 'This step presented both a technical and aesthetic challenge. How could I create a language that is read by touch and integrate it into a plaque meant to be admired visually? 'It wasn't easy, but through countless experiments and careful refinements, I achieved a delicate balance between tactile clarity and visual elegance,' he said. Al-Shehri said that the true purpose of his work is to carry a profound humanitarian message: Art should be accessible to all. He hopes that his pioneering approach will inspire artists across the Arab world to embrace inclusivity in their work.

Green Qassim initiative plants over 7.5m trees in major afforestation push
RIYADH: The Green Qassim Land Initiative has made a significant leap in afforestation, planting a total of 7,521,316 trees across cities, governorates, and villages during its 15th phase. This effort is part of an integrated plan to enhance vegetation cover, combat desertification, and improve quality of life, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday. Launched in 2016 with support from Qassim Gov. Prince Faisal bin Mishaal bin Saud and oversight by Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, the initiative has grown steadily each year. Salman Al-Swainah, director general of the ministry's Qassim branch, called it one of the Kingdom's most prominent environmental initiatives due to its tangible results. The initiative runs in two annual phases — March and October — to ensure optimal climatic conditions for tree growth and sustainability, the SPA reported. Al-Swainah highlighted that the initiative's success stems from strong cooperation among government agencies, the private sector, environmental groups, and volunteers, reflecting rising societal awareness of afforestation's importance for ecological balance. Recently, the initiative received regional and international recognition at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals held at the UN headquarters in New York.
