Uttarakhand rains: Jawan's body recovered 13 Days after Dharali disaster; 66 still missing

DEHRADUN: Rescue teams on Monday made a grim discovery, recovering the body of one of the nine Army jawans who went missing 13 days ago in the devastating rain-induced water disaster that struck Dharali and Harsil in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district. The jawan is among 68 people officially confirmed missing in the tragedy.
The remains, believed to be that of an Army personnel, were located approximately three kilometres beyond Harsil, near Jhala, in the river. This recovery brings the total number of human bodies found in the Dharali-Harsil disaster zone to two. Previously, the bodies of two mules and a cow were also recovered.
According to police sources, entire hotels and individuals are believed to be buried under eight to ten feet of debris, swept down by the gushing waters of August 5. This crucial insight has been gleaned using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) deployed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
The State Disaster Management Authority had confirmed 68 people missing, including nine Army jawans from the Harsil camp, five days after the initial catastrophe.

3 workers killed in building collapse in Delhi's Daryaganj; ‘Who will feed his kids?', asks victim's kin

Three labourers were killed after a portion of a three-storey building that was being reconstructed collapsed in Central Delhi's Daryaganj on Wednesday, police said. 'The building, alongside Sadbhavna Park, collapsed. Three workers — Mohammad Jubbair (24), his uncle, Md. Tofir (32), and Gulsagar (30) — died on the spot,' said DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan. Police said they received a call about the incident around noon. Fire tenders and teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were dispatched to the spot, and the bodies were pulled out from the debris. 'About 10-12 workers were working at the site. Everyone was rescued apart from the three deceased,' said an NDRF personnel. Police said prima facie, the building's wall was structurally weak as it was old, and this may have led to the collapse. 'Further investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause,' said police. The DCP said a case under Section 106 (causing death by negligence) of the BNS has been registered against the building owners and building contractors. At the site, three to four buildings — packed within metres of each other — were attached to Sadhnavna Park's boundary wall. The park was inaugurated by Delhi L-G V K Saxena and CM Rekha Gupta in June. The entire rear section of the building in the middle had collapsed. Earthmovers were seen clearing the debris. Meanwhile, families of the victims gathered at the Emergency ward of Lok Nayak Hospital, where the bodies were taken. Jubbair leaves behind his wife, who is seven months pregnant. Despite having a BA degree, he came to the Capital from his home in Bihar's Madhepura to work as a labourer — a job he had never done before. His father-in-law said, 'My daughter is pregnant. That's why Jubbair took up the job.' Tofir's aunt, Mehrun Khatun, who was in the city to visit relatives, said, 'He has four children, two girls and two boys. One of the girls is just a year old. Who will feed his children? How will they get an education?' Tofir and Jubbair, relatives said, had left Madhepura in July after an offer came from a contractor to redevelop a building in Daryaganj. For the past week, they had been working on the building, at a meagre Rs 700 per month. Tofir's cousin, Irshad, 18, said, 'Kaam bohot tha, toh unhone mujhe bhi bula liya (There was a lot of work, so they called me too).' He had come to Delhi a week ago and was staying in a cramped room in the Kamla Market area. 'Today morning, Tofir told me I could come to work around 12.30 pm. 12 baje mujhe call aaya ki vo nahi rahe (Around 12, I got a call that he was no more),' Irshad said. Mohammad Zabar, 35, a worker from the Arrah area of Bihar, said he was on the opposite side of the second floor when the collapse occurred. 'I was working on the other side when, suddenly, the section across from me gave way. Toqir and Jubair fell, and a third man ran to grab their hands. Lekin sariya hil gaya tha (But the support beams shook). He also lost his balance and fell,' said Zabar, who was staying on the ground floor of the building temporarily. Several cases of building collapses have been reported in the Capital over the past two months. Last week, seven people were killed when the ceiling and a wall of a dargah near Humayun's Tomb complex in Delhi collapsed.

Jaisalmer youth held on charges of spying for Pakistan, fourth espionage case in 2025

JAIPUR: Investigation agencies in Rajasthan have arrested a 25-year-old man on charges of espionage in the Army area along the Jaisalmer–Jodhpur road. The suspect, identified as Jeevan Khan, was detained on Tuesday while allegedly speaking on Pakistani phone numbers. Officials said several other Pakistani contacts were saved in his mobile phone. He will be handed over to the Joint Investigation Committee for interrogation. According to sources, Khan had earlier worked at a restaurant in the Army area two to three years ago and had recently returned for work. He had been under surveillance for some time, with his calls and movements closely monitored. On Tuesday, officials intercepted him while he was on a call with a Pakistani number. Following Operation Sindoor, security agencies have stepped up vigilance in Rajasthan's border areas, keeping a close watch on individuals suspected of links with Pakistan. This marks the third espionage arrest since Operation Sindoor and the fourth case reported this year. Earlier this month, the arrest of DRDO guest house manager Mahendra Prasad in Jaisalmer had raised alarm among security agencies. Investigations revealed Prasad was in touch with a Pakistani handler using the name 'Colonel AK Singh' and had shared sensitive information about scientists visiting the Chandan Field Firing Range guest house. He also allegedly provided photographs of the area and details of local activities during Operation Sindoor. He remains in police custody until August 15. Khan's arrest adds to a series of espionage cases uncovered this year in Jaisalmer district. On 26 March, Rajasthan Intelligence arrested Pathan Khan, a resident of Karam Ki Dhani near the Chandan Field Firing Range, under the Official Secrets Act, days before the Pahalgam terror attack. On 28 May, investigators detained Shakoor Khan, a government employee and personal assistant to former Congress minister Saleh Mohammad, on similar charges and formally arrested him on 3 June. With four arrests in less than five months, intelligence and security agencies remain on high alert to prevent further spying attempts in Rajasthan's sensitive border areas.
